McCain's High School Days Ad

Sen. John McCain's campaign has launched a new TV spot, "American Hero." The ad highlights lessons of honor and integrity McCains said were passed down to him from his high school English teacher and football coach, William Ravenel -- the "hero" referenced in the ad's title. After an intro that includes Teddy Roosevelt and Ted Williams, the ads narrator intones, "Sometimes the heroes we need are right in front of us" and an image of Ravenel slides onto the screen.

The announcer says [Ravenel] "inspired his students to live the honor code: I shall not lie. I shall not cheat. I shall not steal. And I shall turn in the student who does."

Along with lessons about honor, Ravenel, we later learn in the ad, also taught McCain about "redemption." As an image of a sun setting over a neighborhood appears, we learn of McCain's success at helping a friend in trouble: "When one of John McCain's classmates violated the rules and admitted to the infraction, it was John McCain who declared that forgiveness was the best remedy," the ad says.

This morning, McCain returned to the scene of these teenage experiences: Episcopal High School, his alma mater that is still going strong in Alexandria, Va.

In his speech at the school, McCain depicted himself as a "pretty rambunctious boy" in his early high school days who would "respond aggressively and sometimes irresponsibly to anyone whom I perceived to have questioned my sense of honor and self-respect."

And McCain then acknowledged that he carries these same traits as an adult. His high school teachers might "marvel" at his progress, he said, but he added, "I've been known to forget occasionally the discretion expected of a person of my years."

The ad and McCain's appearance at the school are part of his campaign's effort to familiarize voters with his background in the upcoming days. As the Post's Michael Shear points out, McCain has deliberately launched the a week-long biographical tour aimed "at reintroducing himself to the American people and highlighting his military background."

An honorable man no doubt, but wrong for our time. He is still mired in the Vietnam era which shaped him.

His views are not of the needs of the average Americans who are struggling keeping up their mortgage, jobs & healthcare.

He has stated that we need more Nuclear Power, but what about the wasted rods? I believe in renewable/sustainable sources that can be developed with profits from the oil companies.

Truly a candidate for the old folks. In view of our nation's ignorance of its own history, how many potential voters will have a clue about who Theodore Roosevelt was? Or even Ted Williams?

i'm guessing he didn't take Econ 101 where he would have learned that "a hundred more years" in iraq will burn our country to the ground with the middle class, the poor, and their children left behind to clean up the ruins.

Attention black America there is a war going on in the media against our views and opinion's.This is evident when you see how FOX NEWS,CNN and MSNBC have covered Rev. Wrights comments. It is a fact that a lot of black people agree with Rev. Wright and when the media call him wrong or crazy they are disrespecting our views, it is a same how the black opinion is disrespected by the white media. Rev Wright comments have not been disproved and to shun them without investigating its truth, is stupid and unreasonable. The media in this country is against blacks. Everyday on t.v the media disrespects us.

Some in the democratic party has also disrespects black Americans. People like the Clinton's have bamboozled us for years well in the words of BARACK OBAMA not this time!! Its time all truth fighters come together and join the black out vote movement tell the Democratic party that if they rob OBAMA after he has won more states and votes then we will not vote for Hillary Clinton.
