MoveOn Fires Straight Talk at McCain Campaign

MoveOn.org is calling on John McCain to fire one of his top aides, amid reports he's re-vetting his entire campaign staff for ties to lobbying.

As first reported by The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder, the campaign is asking staffers to complete a questionnaire that asks if the person has ever been a registered, lobbyist or foreign agent, and to list all previous foreign or lobbying clients.

MoveOn has apparently already vetted McCain aide Charles R. Black Jr:

As The Washington Post reported in February, Black "leads his lobbying firm, which offers corporate interests and foreign governments the promise of access to the most powerful lawmakers. Some of those companies have interests before the Senate and, in particular, the Commerce Committee, of which McCain is a member."

"Charlie Black has helped some of the world's worst dictators get away with murder," said MoveOn's Noah T. Winer in a news release. "John McCain must do the right thing, live up to his campaign's new conflict of interest policy, and demand Black's immediate resignation."

"This is the sort of outrageous personal smear job we've come to expect from MoveOn.org," said Alex Conant, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee. "Barack Obama's failure to stand up to his closest supporters running these kinds of attacks is evidence of his weak leadership and undermines everything his campaign is supposed to be about."

MoveOn has endorsed Obama's campaign.

but look on the bright side

your spammer didn't desert you

so somebody loves you

even if everybody else is laughing at you

I been reading the article again, and now I'm confused

you say "MoveOn has apparently already vetted McCain aide Charles R. Black Jr:"

and then you say "As The Washington Post reported in February, Black "leads his lobbying firm, which offers corporate interests and foreign governments the promise of access to the most powerful lawmakers."

so which is it ???

did the wapo report the same thing that MoveOn's supposed vetting process revealed ???

isn't it possible that instead of conducting an actual vetting process, MoveOn relied on the report in the wapo ???

so this article is basically ridiculing a political organization for saying the same thing that was reported in the wapo ???

is your reporting really THAT BAD ???

you report something, and then ridicule people for repeating what you published ???

does the wapo have a drug testing program ???

Interesting you always find these creeps tied to the Republican Party.

why is it no one seemes to be able to vett obama ?You know when McCain talked to Jim Rubin about talking to Iran two yrs ago Hamas had not been elected he also said that he would not sit down the leaders with appeasementsready to give them all the terriorty they wanted

"This is the sort of outrageous personal smear job we've come to expect from MoveOn.org," '

..except that it's all true. Republicans have a funny way of looking at things. You describe a fact, they call it a smear. Charlie Black lobbies for Saudi Arabia, for one thing... you remember 9/11? They were Saudis.

And Charlie Black lobbies for a number of dictators who yes, kill their own people. He brags that he uses the 'Straight Talk Express' as an office.

You republicans really are the biggest suckers in the world.

Posted by: sammy | May 17, 2008 2:55 PM

you ain't pulled the plug on this joke of a blog yet ???

some people got no sense of shame

figured it out yet ???

Americans recognize the fact that the wapo has become a propaganda agent of the repuglitard party

that's how you end up parsing nonexistent minutia about Barack Obama, and publishing stenographic copy from repuglitard talking points with no critical analysis

and now Americans recognize you for what you are

once you lost your dignity you can't get it back

have a nice life

Posted by: free patriot | May 18, 2008 11:54 AM

mcsame fires FIVE STAFFERS for being lobbyists

maybe moveon knows something the wapo doesn't

don't you guys have any fact checkers ???

seems strange that a media outlet that is supposed to be staffed by JOURNALIST is reduced to quoting MoveOn

can't the wapo just send a JOURNALIST to find out if charkie black et al are actually lobbyists ???

or is this issue too trivial to investigate ???

cuz most papers wouldn't print a story if it was too trivial to FACT CHECK

Posted by: free patriot | May 21, 2008 10:37 AM

now we learn that mccain was lobbying mccain:

WASHINGTON -- John McCain's top foreign policy adviser lobbied the Arizona senator's staff on behalf of the republic of Georgia while he was working for the campaign, public records show.

maybe the wapo should ask USAToday to loan you a few journalists to pass out pointers

whoa......that's pretty good!

GOP this is nothing more than the truth. It is hard, I agree but it is all based on facts. In Tennessee you made an add about Michelle Obama pretending her not to be proud of America which is not true. She mispoke and said this is the first time I'm really proud of America. What she wanted to say was, today/nowadays I'm the proudest of America in the context of het speech. MovenOn is right Black should be fired!

Kind of takes me back to my youth "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party" Joseph McCarthy just won't stay dead. I am supprised that he came back as a democrat, but that seems to be where the hate resides.

Posted by: Skeeter | May 22, 2008 8:47 AM

Those people at MoveOn.org got a big screw loose. The more they do that, the less likely we Clinton supporters would vote for Obama, period!!!!

The GOP never learns!

Republicans using Rovian politics can dish it out, but can't take it.When they get punched in the face with facts in a manner that copies their MO, Repubican flag pin wearing hypocrite draft dodgers whine, snivel and cry foul. Trading with the enemy is what Republican power brokers do best. Get a life Alex, better yet, read Naomi Klein's book "Shock Doctrine" to get a recap of what you, Black, and Republican power brokers really stand for, YOU GO MOVE ON!

Posted by: Anonymous | May 22, 2008 9:30 AM

I am a Democrat, but I do not approve of MoveOn nor their tactics. They are only interested in controlling the Democratic party. They are arrogant and disrespectful of the real Democrats.I wish they would form their own party and stop besmirching the name. The true Democrats are Moderates and do not approve of these radical upstarts.

McCain gave a number of years of his life for the nation. What has Moveon.org has given and those who are writing on behalf of them have given to the nation.Who do you trust more and what is their background. Some billionaire came and dumped few million dollars and these rats came out of there holes to get a job and do they deserve to make a mess of our election process, you figure it out.

Posted by: P.Barman | May 22, 2008 10:19 AM

To unsigned - YOU GO MOVE ON. Great piece of plitical discourse. I guess when you are unable to articulate you thoughts, this is the best you can do. I have to agree with Nannie Turner above, Move On is hurting your party and could cost you the election, as it has previously. In any event, I rest my case.

I am a Democrat and I love Move On. They always speak truth to power and we need more of that in this country, not less.

Posted by: FC | May 22, 2008 10:42 AM

P. Barman, you are absolutely right, McCain give years of his life for this country. However, that's not the only way you serve your country. When corrupting and hubris put a great nation on the brink of disaster, it is the citizen's right to challenge the status quo. Read Jefferson. This is a supposedly a democracy. The actions of our government and its official are our representatives and we have a right to have our voices heard by way of the 1st amendment to the constitution of the U.S. Move on is not smearing McCain, they are pointing out facts reported in the news. You cannot be sanctimonious about being a straight talker when you repeatedly double talk. All politicians have to deal with lobbyist but to rail against lobbyist in Washington and then have them be the driving force behind your campaign is a bit much. Still, none of the current politicians' hands are completely clean.

Until I check the facts for myself, I am more inclined to credit the accusations made by MoveOn than the RNC's "outraged" denials. This is simply logical, based on the recent historical record.

Posted by: Iconoblaster | May 22, 2008 12:33 PM

Who are these dictators that kill their own people that Charlie Black has lobbied for? Maybe he has, maybe he hasn't. I don't know, but it would be helpful if you included some examples rather than report an accusation that doesn't put forth any evidence.

Posted by: ssgmathew | May 22, 2008 1:03 PM

Why do you think the GOP and the right wingers, especially Sean Hannity, Carl Rove, Billy O'Reilly and the like, are trying to blast Obama and his wife. They don't want the American people to find out about Mccain. They think if they keep it up
we won't find out about McCain and his henchmans. Don't be fool people they are all criminals. Were is cindy's tax records.

Posted by: Carolyn LeBeauf | May 22, 2008 1:14 PM

Folks, lobbying is a fact of life in government. Ambassadors are nothing more than the official lobbyist of one nation to another nation. There is nothing inherently wrong with lobbying or lobbyist. The only difference between an advocate or an advocacy group and a lobbyist is which side of the issue you are on (my advocate is your lobbyist and vice versa).

It is the conduct of the lobbyist/advocate that we should look at and judge. From what I have read about Black and his lobbying firm they have represented some good people and some not so good people (example Ferdinand Marcos -good then bad). But, they resprented them without resorting to bribery or other illegal acts.

A democracy by its very nature is a process of negotiation and compromise. The people that fuel the official process of negotiation and compromise in Congress are called Senators, Representatives, and Staffers. The people that fuel the unofficial process of negotiation and compromise in Congress are called lobbyist and advocates (aka ex-Senators, ex-Representatives, and ex-Staffers). The ones that do it very well and are successful at it are called criminals and scum by those that represent the loosing side.

Every political party and campaign uses someone who is, has been, or will be a lobbyist/advocate of some form (all of the living ex-Presidents are - and most of the Founding Fathers were). Let's focus on the conduct of the individuals and stop worrying about what label we can hang on someone.

Sam
How do you KNOW she misspoke? Because you want to believe she did? I see. Anything that can be costrued as a negative to Obama is an honest mistake. NOT!!!

Let MoveOn demand that Obama repudiate Bill Ayers, who, by the way, PERSONALLY advocated the murder of Americans in the 60's. Not as a lobbyist, but as an active member of the Weather Underground. Gee I guess that's okay since he is an Obama supporter.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 22, 2008 4:54 PM

Thanks for reporting on the MoveOn campaign. I am an Obama supporter. Union folks are hopping on the Obama bandwagon and have come out with some info about McCain not being receptive to unions or working individuals. I hope that we can get the message to folks who think McCain will help get jobs back to the USA that it is a pipedream and not realistic. We have to realize that we are living in a new era and in a global economy. Even so called American made products are not all totally manufactured here. For example: autos, motorcycles, appliances are all made with parts from all over the globe.

there is so much anger out there. Lets have the election early so that people can be put back in their cages.

Posted by: John W. C. | May 22, 2008 6:39 PM

Amazing that whether Black stays or goes is even aa question. Black was very involved with Ferdinand Marcos and if you were ever in Philippines When Marcos was their leader, you would realize that one had to whisper any complaint you had and then often look around to make sure you were safe. The Marcos regime was very repressive and he meant to intimidate against angy negative statement about his regime. I cannot believe that Black feels it will not hurt McCain, who after all, still has the guy in his campaign organization. Black can represent and suck it up to anyone he pleases, but he should not then expect me or any one else to be happy he is in the McCain inner group. Fire the guy is my advice. And if he is donating his time, nothing is ever donated free of cost. So look out for the bill McCain will have to pay if he gets elected.
