Obama Speaks Spanish in New Ad

Making use of relatively simple Spanish, but a very good accent, Barack Obama addresses the Democratic voters of Puerto Rico.

"Mensaje a Puerto Rico," or "Message to Puerto Rico" is a direct-to-camera appeal by Obama.

"Naci en una isla," he says, meaning "I was born on an island."

"Entiendo que la comida, la gasolina, y todo cuesta mas. Puerto Rico tiene derecho a un mejor futuro," Obama adds, meaning "I know that food, gas, and everything costs more. Puerto Rico has the right to a better future."

Later he states that, "Este primer de Junio, sera un honor contar con tu voto," meaning, "This first of June it would be an honor to have your vote."

"He's kind of always been around Latinos, and obviously heard some language," says Vincent Casillas, coordinator of Spanish media for the Obama campaign, who adds he only recent heard the senator's Spanish-speaking skills during a recent campaign stop in Miami. The ad has been well received in Puerto Rico, Casillas added, suggesting the senator may do similar ads in the coming months.

What do you think: Could Obama's perfect Spanish pronunciation help him with Latino voters?

Obama's spoken Spanish is impressive. Not cringe-inducing, like our "Spanish-speaking" President.

If he speaks Spanish, would Hispanics prefer a President who can speak Spanish? It looks like that he wants to be the President of all Americans and not one particular ethnic group. Good for him.

Love it, sexy obama speaking sexy spanish.

Since Puerto Rico is a spanish speaking country (non-sovereign but still a nation) it is reasonable to have Obama talking spanish in an ad. There is enough criticism in the island about this 'colonial foreign primary' (a name that is given by puerto rican political analysts). I can't imagine an english ad in Puerto Rico for a president that puerto ricans do not vote in the US general elections.

Muy bien Senior Obama! Vamos al casa blanca! Estamos listos y es el tiempo para un estado nuevo que se llama Puerto Rico.

He is the devil as far as I am concerned. His father wasn't even born in the United States. I thought that to be president, your father had to be born in the USA.

I love it!!! Now speak a little French!!!

This is the best presdient America could have hoped for.

Ladies wake up, under McCain we lose our right to choose! McCain said he wants to overturn Roe v. Wade. There will be atleast three Supreme Court vacancies under the next president.

Great Ad from Mr. Presidente!

Posted by: Olivier | May 28, 2008 6:06 PM

@ Bill: People with parents not born in the US are the devil now? Fascinating, that makes the world a kind of scary place though considering that's the vast majority of the human race. I do often enjoy these little insights into the thought processes of people who strongly oppose Obama.

(And no Bill, your parents do not have to be born in the U.S. for you to be president. YOU have to be born in the U.S. to be president.)

Posted by: Grant | May 28, 2008 6:06 PM

Bill you are a dumb@ss. You are obviously one of those uneducated people who fall into the pro-clinton group. I don't like to disrespect others but please dont post a comment or say something if you do not know what you are talking about. The requirement to be President is that you be a natural born citizen of the U.S., 35 years old and have lived in the US for at least 14 years, not that your father was a citizen, thats absurd.

Posted by: Bobby from ATL | May 28, 2008 6:13 PM

Bill You say " He is the devil as far as I am concerned. His father wasn't even born in the United States. I thought that to be president, your father had to be born in the USA."

Grant Says" (And no Bill, your parents do not have to be born in the U.S. for you to be president. YOU have to be born in the U.S. to be president.)"

I say " Grant is right, about that, and to top it all, Mccain wasn't even born in the USA, he was born in Panama Canal, geez in PANAMA!"

I'm impressed everyday with Osmin, he is fluent in Spanish, his uncle was a Soviet and liberated jews at the prison camps during the 2nd world war and I'm sure Obama himself was a fine example of a military hero. Everyday we learn more and more great things about Obama. Can't wait until tomorrow!!

Uncle Charlie, hey what's up!

You want a person who doesn't know the difference between Sunni and Shia!

No wonder McCain wants to fight a 100 year war!

He's already admitted he's ignorant about the economy!

The War and the Economy are the two main issues and he's terrible on both.
Weak where he's supposed to be strong.

And this idea that being in the military is a sin quo non for being President is hilarious. That's just ignorant!
I'll not succumb to the temptation of a history lesson.

McCain was one of the seven worst students in grade point average in his graduating class.

This election is a no-brainer!

All-in for Obama!

BTW, you had best hope that they aren't campaigning in the same areas. Obama's a far more attractive and engaging candidate.

McCain doesn't have a chance.

I support Obama. Those who support the rest are mostly against him for the wrong reasons. Its sad but true. Those who hate him and criticize him for race, religion, father, name, pastor have to realise that all those are hardly reasons to denounce a string politically willed man like Obama.

I have a point to make. People, and America, keeps questioning if he is Muslim or not. I'm convinced he isn't. (On one hand u say he's a Muslim on the other you criticize his PASTOR?)

But SO WHAT if he was a Muslim. Being racist against Muslims is the most ignorant and arrogant thing America has done, and they should try to reflect on that and change their thinking from Muslims=Bad to Terrorist=Bad. Get a grip. Get an education.

Clinton has taken Kentucky and Obama is right there in Oregon.
The Democratic race for nomination is still very much alive - and most likely to be decided by superdelegates - as CNN points out clearly

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/20/primary.wrap/index.html

If you're tired of waiting around for those super delegates to make a decision already, go to LobbyDelegates.com and push them to support Clinton or Obama

If you haven't done so yet, please write a message to each of your state's superdelegates at http://www.lobbydelegates.com

Obama Supporters:

Sending a note to current Obama supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Clinton supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Obama, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Obama. It's that easy...

Clinton Supporters too .... !

It takes a moment, but what's a few minutes now worth to get Clinton in office?! Those are really worth !

Sending a note to current Clinton supporters lets them know it's appreciated, sending a note to current Obama supporters can hopefully sway them to change their vote to Clinton, and sending a note to the uncommitted folks will hopefully sway them to vote for Clinton. It's that easy...

Today it appears that "O" bama was actually born in Kenya, but his mother rushed to Hawaii so that he could be a US citizen. His actual father was a sailor who is retired from Grayhound Bus, living in Hawaii. Really people, his father being a sailor and a bus driver automactically makes him a US born citizen, thus he can run for President. When will the lying stop? Who is this Obama guy, who are his friends and last but certainly not least, who is giving him all that money to win the presidential race? It has been said that he is a favorite and has many supporters from the middle east, is this where his money originated?

Posted by: Charlie | May 29, 2008 11:05 AM

Not perfect, but certainly acceptable. But Does he really speak Spanish or did he simply learn to say some words with a preety good pronunciation? I think it's the latter. Nonetheless, I give him an A for trying.

Buena suerte PR!

Dan - as intellectual as President Obama is, I'm sure he is learning spanish and a host of other languages. I do have to say that he probably understands and speaks a little spanish right now.... but by the time the elections come around, he would be fluent in not only spanish but maybe a couple of other languages. Can't wait to hear him speaks a couple of other languages. This is what America is all about.

Go Mr. President.

Posted by: ob08 | May 29, 2008 12:07 PM

I think Senator Obama is to be commented for his efforts to reach all American's with his message. Many hard working American's have language other than perfect English. After all, not even President Bush speaks good English. What good is any message if they people for whom it is intended do not understand it.

Posted by: cathy | May 29, 2008 12:07 PM

Bill, get a grip. One only has to be natural born citizen to be President, and Barack was born in Hawaii. It is interesting to note that Sen. McCain is the one that had some controversy earlier this year surrounding his eligibility to be President because he was born in Panama. Sen. Clair McCaskill (Obama supporter) penned a bill which Barack co-sponsored which asserted that McCain is indeed a natural born citizen because his father was stationed in Panama.

Posted by: Tane | May 29, 2008 12:07 PM

To bill - are your serious? That's why not everyone should be able to vote for president. You don't even know what the qualifications are. Maybe you are the devil considering you know nothing about the Constitution of the United States of America. I bet you think the 2nd amendment only reads "The right to bear arms"; well it doesn't so read it. You just might learn something.

Posted by: fmlndn71 | May 29, 2008 12:18 PM

Obama is a truly gifted guy. The rich and powerful people in this country are very afraid that he will be able to open the eyes of the populace. Time to wake up America, and realize that we are controlled by a government-business coalition that only cares about its own special interests.

The Obama bashers can only call him names - they cant argue against his message.

Posted by: Lawrence | May 29, 2008 12:19 PM

Good accent, bad grammar--should have said... "e invertir en la educacion," rather than "invierte."

In another place, the transcription from the Post is mistaken. Obama says "el primero [correct]de junio," the transcription reads "el primer de junio [incorrect].

Sorry Bill,
In this country, it doesn't matter where your father was born. As long as you were a natural born citizen, you can be president. (McCain BARELY gets in since he was born in Panama - but on a U.S. Naval Hospital in Panama.)

"He's the devil" - why? Because he speaks spanish? Our current president barely speaks english, does that make him God?

If this "Black List" is real, how come
it hasn't been made public?
This is scary, knowing the Clintons could
be so sleazy, and cruel.
Why haven't they been investigated for these things. Too many people have died
because of their ties to the Clintons.

jase and JusticeP are you claiming that ignorance is bliss?

Have you ever considered truth?

Give it a rest.

Barack Obama speaks about changing Washington, while being advised by the good old boys in the halls of Congress is in and of itself suspect. Those same good old boys are part of the decision-making process that got us into the mess we're in now.

Last July, Senator Obama pledged to meet personally and without precondition, during his first year, the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea. Criticized afterwards, he made his pledge more explicitly, naming Iranian President Ahmadinejad and Venezuela strongman Hugo Chávez as leaders he would grace with first-year visits.

By October, Senator Obama was backpedaling, talking about needing "some progress or some indication of good faith," and by April, "sufficient preparation." It got so bad his foreign policy advisers were (falsely) denying he'd ever said he'd meet with Mr. Ahmadinejad - even as he still defended his original pledge to have meetings without precondition.

Senator Obama voted for the 2005 energy bill, which provided billions in tax subsidies and giveaways to big oil. This bill was called the "The Best Energy Bill Corporations Could Buy," by Public Citizen. It provided $6 billion in oil and gas subsidies; $9 billion in coal subsidies; $12 billion in nuclear subsidies; and a host of other oil and gas regulatory rollbacks, including exempting a coalbed methane drilling technique called "hydraulic fracturing," from the Safe Drinking Water Act - an act that could make our drinking water unsafe. Senator Clinton opposed this bill because she believed we ought to be investing in alternative and renewable energy, and reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Senator Obama supported this bill. [Vote Number 213, 7/29/05. Final passage on H.R. 6, the conference report for the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Conference report passed, Obama: Voted Aye. Clinton: Voted No.]

Jase, wow, I hope your words regarding "what happens when you have dirt on the Clintons" are not true because if they are, we are dealing with some really scary people! Last year, I heard Kathleen Willey (who accused Bill of sexually molesting her) and, as you point out, whose husband's death was ruled a suicide, say on TV some of the creepy things that have happened to her that she suspected the Clntons were behind. I can't believe that Obama would seriously consider her as his VP thus placing her a heartbeat away from the presidency? GOD FORBID and GOD PLEASE PROTECT OBAMA!!!

This stuff is hilarious. According to Calvin, Obama's father was not some maybe-Muslim-or-atheist-furriner, as these sources have been telling us up to now, but an honest-to-God, 100% red-blooded American citizen and an upstanding member of our nation's armed forces. (Of course, that news is carried here right after news of the forty-seven or so people the Clintons have supposedly killed.) The assertion that that Obama was really born in Kenya but somehow his mother managed to smuggle him into the United States (the contributor doesn't say how she managed to do that) to register him as born in a hospital in Honolulu, is truly inspired, and the news that Obama's real biological father is a retired Greyhound bus driver living in San Francisco (Calvin the Honolulu barber doesn't say how he knows that either), but hey, you can google it, it's all over the internet!
Anyway, I'm very happy that Obama speaks Spanish so well.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 29, 2008 4:27 PM

Wow, Obama speaks beautiful Spanish. Now let's hear how well Hillary can speak Spanish. She could fake different accents in different states. If she is truly interested in Spanish language and culture, she could have learned Spanish easily. Now let's hear her Spanish before the Puerto Rico primary.

To be president, only the candidate has to be born in the United States. Another way is if your parents were stationed overseas in the military such as Senator McCain was born on a military base in Panama.

We should end first generation birthright citizenship ASAP. Dr. Ron Paul is absolutely right. By the way, all his campaign goods are now on sale. If you want to buy American made goods with your tax rebate money, he has got them all.

"The anchor baby phenomenon has also been very problematic. Simply being born on US soil to illegal immigrant parents should not trigger automatic citizenship. This encourages many dangerous behaviors and there are many unintended consequences as a result of this blanket policy. I am against amnesty and I have introduced an amendment to the Constitution (H.J. Res 46) which will end this form of amnesty." - Ron Paul.

Excellent!!!! I like bilingual people. As the President of United States of America, I am pleased that he can interact with the hispanic in spanish. This is unbelievable. Go Obama, go the US president!!!

Posted by: nyolamo | May 29, 2008 5:06 PM

1. Bill really needs a lesson in history.
2. That's quite a long list of clintonian
dirty laundry, if it's true god helps us
if Billery wins.
3. Some trash came in the back door as usual making up stories thinking that most of of are ignorant enough to believe the crap.
4. If Senator Obama speaks spanish to my
people in Puerto Rico good, Spanish is the language spoken in Puerto Rico. In the USA it should be English. But since this country is made up of imigrant from all over the world, then it's is good for our future president to be able to communicate in different languages. Our current president can't even speak English correctly.

All these comments about Obama, Clinton, and McCaine are just tiring. Give it up and vote in November.

Posted by: David Monson | May 29, 2008 7:03 PM

Even Rupert Murdoch owner of Fox News, that TV channel that spews bile on Obama, is now impressed with Obama and looks like he is favoring Obama to win.

Bill O'Reilly and Hannity better change their tunes and be more fair and balance instead of being blatantly biased for McCain and the Republican party.

No, Bill.

Obama's OK, since he was born in the United States.

Now having been born in the United States, he would have been required to attend school. Where he would have learned about things like the Constitution. And the Presidency.

And since you don't know about either of those things, I guess that means you're out.

HILLARY CLINTON BEATS MCCAIN = SHE IS THE BEST COMMANDER IN CHIEF
Gen. Hugh Shelton, including 34 other Generals and Admirals, ....."You know in the history of our great nation, there has been only one former President who received an endorsement of a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs prior to being elected. And in this case, not only one, but two former Chiefs along with a former Vice Chairman have expressed their support for Senator Clinton. And so I'm proud to be one of those two [in endorsing Sen. Hillary Clinton for president].".....Today, in General Shelton's hometown paper, The Daily Southerner, Gen. Shelton endorses Hillary: "An opinion piece deserves a frank opinion," and that, "Unlike any other candidate, she knows that maintaining a highly-trained military and alert military goes beyond throwing dollars at the Pentagon or giving upbeat speeches."....Sen. Clinton has gotten to know our military during her time as first lady and as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.....Unlike any other candidate, she knows that maintaining a highly-trained military and alert military goes beyond throwing dollars at the Pentagon or giving upbeat speeches. She understands the impact of endless commitments on the service families who also serve our country. She has already worked hard to build the morale, training and ultimately the capabilities of our armed forces, and she uniquely understands the importance of remembering those on our forgotten front line in Afghanistan. We need a president like Sen. Clinton, who understands that a successful foreign policy combines equal parts of economic strength, military readiness and diplomatic persuasion. ... (Read all of Gen. Shelton's endorsement .)In the long history of our nation, there has been only one former Green Beret to become the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs -- General Hugh Shelton. He stands beside Hillary and 34 of his fellow Generals and Admirals in enthusiastically endorsing Hillary Clinton for President and next Commander-in-Chief.

I am sure that the Bill guy was just making a joke, he couldent be serious could he (perhaps I am simply a confused Canadian who does not know the extent of ignorance that exists in some areas of your great country)

I will not vote in the Colonial Primaries. Presidential candidates have simply lied and cheated Puerto Ricans of its right to solve its problems via its own effort and creativity. It is evident that Puerto Rico suffers greatly from lack of sovereignty and this primary will only delay what we know we need: independence. Everywhere the US sphere of influence diminishes in PR we see economic and social progress. Vieques is a prime example.

I think Sen. Hillary Clinton is so so so desperate about becoming the President of the greatest nation on earth. She makes damning, acidic, toxic and killer comments about Obama and she pipes these to her supporters. I think its not a do or die affair.
Obama is naturally pleasing and very much unlike her.
Because of Hillary's antecedents or precedents, God forbid she goes to the capitol hill; We will see arrogance, pride and bad tongue personified. I think she has many things to hide or hiding.

Obama has a rendezvous with history. Sail on Obama and see you when you get there. All of them combined together will be playing and dragging behind you till you gets there.

I am a Nigerian attuned with affairs in America because I love America and Americans. GOD HELP AMERICA. (AND NIGERIA TOO).

Salud y suerte.
Saludos.

It is heart warming to have a President that can speak to all Americans, particularly when a large population of Americans are spanish speaking. Often we hear chauvinism about those who do not speak English. The English were immigrants. Many of the Indians who were subjected to genocide were pushed into mexico and alaska. The latinos have a right to be here, this is their continent. It offends me so that some white and black americans call them foreigners. So, anyway we need to respect our diversity.

You cannot master pronunciation of a foreign language in a quick course. To know the dialect is to know the people and the culture, is to respect the people enough to speak their language... Oh how we need a President that is truly representative of the people of this land. That has integrity, moral authority, intelligent, worldly and goodness of heart. His management and staff evidently are great organizers, and business persons.

We need a President that is inclusive and not divisive, that does not just feed into 100s of years of white supremacy and political dominance in this country, because the world is multi-cultural and is developing.

To suggest that we vote a white person in because we can get racists to vote for us is a vote for national oppression.

We are moving forward in a diverse and changing world! Go Americans! Go Obama! Lets reject all backward thinking and move ahead!

Beyond the "perfect pronounciation" with which Obama speaks Spanish, the overriding point is that Spanish speakers will not have to rely on anyone to translate or mistranslate the content and true meaning of his message.

Posted by: Garnett Brown | May 30, 2008 2:35 PM

I can tell Bill you are from somewhere in West Virginia, uneducated and racist.... Suggest you attend Elementary school classes and learn some history, as well as read the US constitution (assuming you know how to read and make sense of words) so that you can become a productive member of your own community. Don't spread Hate and show your ugly-self since doing so will only set you backwards and make you feel miserable

McCain was NOT born in the U.S. He was born in Panama. He had to get a legal opinion that it was okay for him to run for president because he was actually born in the Canal Zone when it belonged to the U.S. but it was NOT the U.S.
Barry Goldwater was NOT born in the U.S. He was born in the Arizona Territory BEFORE it became a U.S. state. He had to get a legal opinion to run also.

I'm a 20 year old, first time voter that lives in Puerto Rico, and I have to admit that Obama's message has been very well received.

But the majority of the people are talking about voting for Hillary..

Let's just hope that that's just talk.

OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT!

Posted by: Adriana M. | June 1, 2008 10:05 AM

Those who are "wowed" by Obama's bi-language abilities, his ethnic background, ths oratory skills are merely sheep looking for someone they can relate to. We are talking about someone who will lead and represent this country. Personally although often swayed as many are totally swayed by his skills, I am trying to look at our next president's beliefs, his or her's voting record, and yes those who our next president would call "friends" and whom they have chosen in a non-political environment to associate with. Sorry folks, I'm white and I've been conditioned since the 60's and before to condem racial hatred and the Obama's just don't quite cut it in that regard. If you notice Obama has, although publically supposedly quit the Trinity church, deferred his and his wife's final decison until January and citing, he is traveling most of the time and doesn't have time to attend Trinity every Sunday. Now, if the Obama's, after winning the election, backpeddle as he does on many controversal issues, and our president of the US sits in a church that promotes hate just how will you feel about that? I suppose if you are not white, it may not have an impact on how you feel about him but trust me, a person that really feels that hate is not acceptable would have never sat in that church and taken his young to listen to that hatered for the years he and his wife has. Sorry, the old saying that you are judged by the company you keep may be an old fashioned way of thinking, but it still holds true. Obama is saying (and in your language of choice) what you want to hear. It is a sad day when the US picks a president based on what he or she will do for you personally and not based on policy for the overall betterment of a country. Better watch him and his wife closely or this may just be another white house embarassement that we have to live with. Oh and by the way, Obama may very well be the least of the available evils to vote for but that does not make him suitable. Haven't we had enough of our most prominent leader being belittled and disrespected? I'm not sure from the available people running we have the perfect choice (I have not made mine as yet but certainly will not make it on appearance or on the ability to speak Spanish) but please look past all the candidates appeasment speaches and look at their past records and their service to this country. It may play a big part in the future of our country.

IT'S PEOPLE LIKE "AMURCIA" WHO ARE AS TERRIFYING AS BIN LADEN. I AM ASTOUNDED BY THE IGNORANCE OF SUCH AN INDIVIDUAL. PLEASE STAY HOME ON ELECTION DAY. ACTUALLY "AMURCIA" IF YOU WERE BORN IN PUERTO RICO (A LOVELY ISLAND), PLEASE RETURN AND LEAVE RATIONAL THINKING AMERICANS ALONE. YOUR HATE AND IGNORANCE SERVES NO PURPOSE IN THIS WORLD! BEV OF BOSTON, MA! P.S. OBAMA WAS BORN IN THE U.S. FOR YOUR INFO!

To:di54 The Bible is the bedrock of the average American family. As Christians, we must talk to our enemies and even forgive them. The alternative for not talking to our enemies is war and America is not ready for that.
America lost over 3000 citizens in 9/11. We have retaliated with the lives of over 4000 young Americans, hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqis and a battered world economy. Tell me, what do we gain in a war?

Posted by: Harrison | June 6, 2008 8:59 PM

I am from Ghana, Africa, and for the first time in my life I have been very enthusiastic about American politics. I love Hillary's ground breaking history, as a woman. However, I am also very much impressed by what Obama stands for. I think many people in my country, and around the globe, would prefer him to be the president, not because he is black but because we see in him a pragmatic change for America and the world. The world has no business in suggeesting a president for the American people if not for the fact that every single American domestic and foreign policy has a direct or indirect effect on every nation in the world. Hence the world cannot stand by and pretend not to worry about the person Americans choose as the world leader. I think it is high time America assign a few electoral colleges to every friendly country to determine who becomes the world leader. I'm just day dreaming.
