Obama Invokes Rush Limbaugh in New Spanish-Language Ads

By Ed O'Keefe in The Trail:

The Obama campaign has released new radio and TV ads in Spanish that seek to tie Sen. John McCain to anti-immigrant comments made by radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh. The ads also suggest the Republican has "dos caras" -- "two faces" -- when it comes to his relations with Latino voters. The new messages, airing in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico, come in response to recent Spanish-language ads by the McCain campaign that suggest Obama is responsible for the collapse of last year's bipartisan immigration reform efforts.

"They want us to forget the insults we've put up with, the intolerance," the television ad's announcer says in Spanish as a picture of Rush Limbaugh appears onscreen with quotes of him saying, "Mexicans are stupid and unqualified" and "Shut your mouth or get out."

"They made us feel marginalized in a country we love so much," the ad continues. "John McCain and his Republican friends have two faces. One that says lies just to get our vote and another, even worse, that continues the failed policies of George Bush that put special interests ahead of working families."

The companion radio ad uses the same script as above and then continues:

"Don't forget that John McCain abandoned us rather than confront the leaders of the Republican Party. Many of us were born here, and others came to work and achieve a better life for their families -- not to commit crimes or drain the system like many of John McCain's friends claim. Let's not be fooled by political tricks from John McCain and the Republicans. Vote so they respect us. Vote for a change."

This Spanish-language ad battle started Friday, when the McCain campaign started airing a TV spot in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico that laid the failure of comprehensive immigration reform at the feet of Obama and his Democratic colleagues, even though he supported the bipartisan efforts to enact such reforms and voted for their final proposal last year. It continued Tuesday when the RNC bought time in Nevada for a radio ad expressing similar arguments. The Obama campaign and Hispanic and pro-immigration reform groups denounced the ads as distortions.

"I think they don't want us to pay attention to the fact that John McCain's message in English is different than his message in Spanish," said Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) during a conference call with reporters today. "If the Latino community can't count on John McCain in the heat of an election, how can we possibly count on him when the heat is really on in the White House?"

Both candidates have aired Spanish-language radio and TV ads primarily in the Southwest and Florida, where growing Hispanic populations have the potential to help turn previously red states blue for Obama. A July survey by the Pew Hispanic Center gave Obama a wide lead over McCain nationwide among Latino voters and Democrats don't plan to let the lead slip.

"Whenever we get a punch from Senator McCain, we're going to counterpunch harder," former transportation secretary Federico Pena said on the conference call. "We're not going to take any vote for granted."

The Obama campaign also plans to start airing advertisements next week in Florida.

Please see this link. Mr. Limbaugh's comments were as part of an update where he outlined the MEXICAN IMMIGRATION POLICY. And yet, that wasn't mentioned in the above article, let alone the commercial. I thought the O's campaign was going to be different...maybe not.

Posted by: Right Guard | September 17, 2008 3:00 PM

The problem is that Obama didn't place Limbaugh's statements "Mexicans are stupid and unqualified" and "Shut your mouth or get out" in the proper context?

Are you serious?

The fact that you think there is a proper context for such remarks speaks volumes about you, nothing at all about Obama.

As long as the Obama campaign, continue
to take a beat down from, the right then

Well Tom S, if there is no conceivable proper context for the remarks, why did you just repeat them. If ran an ad quoting Tom S as having posted 'Mexicans are stupid' I could make you look bad.

See how that works?

Calling him two-faced is subjective, I'm sure John would prefer dynamic and flexible but this is Barrys ad. It was accurate and issue related, I don't think it violates any promises Obama made about the tenure of the campaign or the content of the discussion.
Those who cry “unfair” should remember, John McCain abandoned his own immigration bill, it's imminently fair to remind Latino voters of that.

"Toms" disparaging remarks about "proper context" shows how ignorant the Barry O'Bamaman coterie of acolytes is. Each day exposes the Democrats (and especially O'Bama)to be the fools we all know them to be. All of them should heed the old adage: "It is better to keep one's mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt".

Thats vicious and truly dishonorable of Obama. Now,lets see where all our media"truth seekers"are.

obama is a rascist courting latino vote. McCain was the only senator to work w/ the illegal immigration bill fairly. where was Obama? Obama will never get the latino vote & hispanics dont trust his deceptive ads & ways.

How are you? Marc is feeling rejuvenated working on Obama's campaign. He wants to do more than calls and emails. Maybe a local meeting on Friday night.

I made beets for dinner and they came out real good and have enough left overs for 2 days, yeah! Am enjoying my driving lessons. Tomorrow Marc will take a break from it to do his jogging after work instead. I plan to be in the city at employment agencies and help Max do reception for his exhibit in the afternoon from 1:30-4:30pm since he needs to be at the Student's Art League at that same time.

wonder if there is truth to the actual candidate that bumps off mutual opponent will win in November regardless of issues and poll numbers?

apparently the mutual opponent is wealthy, exposed corruption within both parties and is presently targeted.

the question is how?

Will GOP solicit a Guiliani-like mob ties such as used by his protege, ex-NYPD commissioner and was indicted for it and may be doing up to 140 years in jail? Or Gotti, Jr., who is available as he currently in the midst of his conspiracy and murder trial?

Will Dems solicit an OJ Simpson-like black convict with jail time? BTW, OJ is available too as he is in the midst of his kidnap/robbery trial.

Will both parties employ the popular law enforcement practice of 'sweetheart exchange deals' where convicts commit crimes/murders in exchange for less jail time, conveniently covered up and real culprits not suspected?

Having shared this information, do we have to worry about our physical safety too? For example, does my diabetic husband have to worry about his health/life during his daily 4pm jog after work in the Hackensack, Bogota and Teaneck areas in NJ? Do we have to worry about our safety in the middle of the night as our habits and plans are known in advanced with bugging devices in both private and public places?

THAT AD WAS AS GOOD AS THAT THREE POINTER

Speaking of taking things out of context: unfortunately, it is a perception in America that showing strength means “getting down and dirty” in insults and jabs. Obama unfortunately has been engaging in a bit of this lately, but even if you’re a McCain supporter, you can’t say that McCain is innocent of this type of behavior.

Furthermore, during the Primaries McCain was postulating himself as a “maverick”, a different kind of Republican vowing to run a different kind of campaign. “We are running a different kind of campaign because John McCain is a different kind of candidate.” What exactly did he mean by that? We certainly haven't seen this new type of campaign in his ads or on the campaign trail. And it just so happens that we have heard that message before, from the Republican Party no less, when Bush styled himself as a "compassionate conservative" and a uniter in his 2000 campaign.

Case in point: how is it that day after day McCain-Palin go out with a straight face and say to prospective voters: "Obama and his liberal congressional allies want a massive government… billions in spending increases" including "painful income taxes, skyrocketing taxes on life savings, electricity and home heating oil…Can your family afford that?" Just today McCain said on the campaign trail that Obama "claims that paying higher taxes is 'patriotic'". Obviously, those remarks take the statements made by their opponents, Obama-Biden, out of context, too. When these statements were made, Obama-Biden said that taxes would increase for those whose income is greater than $250,000 per year [something McCain-Palin conveniently omit when they make reference to this issue]. And Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said Thursday that paying more in taxes is the patriotic thing to do “for wealthier Americans” which again, is a blatant omission.

And how is Obama’s ad portraying Limbaugh and McCain as immigration unfriendly untrue? McCain has flip-flopped on pretty much every issue of importance to Americans [e.g., Wall Street deregulation was his stance until 72 hours ago when he realized that this is an unpopular position during this election]? Immigration reform is no exception. Just this past March 3rd it was reported [and I quote] "McCain went so far at a debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in January to say that if his original proposal came to a vote on the Senate floor, he would NOT vote for it." So, today he is not for immigration reform that would help the Hispanic and Latino communities in the U.S.

So, McCain-Palin and Limbaugh accusing Obama-Biden of inaccuracies and distortion of facts is like the pot calling the kettle black.
