Less Talk, More Action, 'Heroes'

"Heroes" fans, let's talk.

After breaking out of the TV gates in top form last fall, the NBC sci-fi series stumbled both in ratings and quality after an ill-timed six-week spring break beginning in March. Did Monday's season premiere make up for that unfortunate hiatus and subsequent disappointing season finale?

When we last saw our heroes, Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) had taken off into the sky with nuclear brother Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) in an effort to save New York, Sylar (Zachary Quinto) left a trail of blood into a manhole and Hiro blinked himself into the middle of 17th-century Japan.

First impressions of the second season premiere: how about less gabbing from our heroes and more, well, heroics? Is this a verbose bunch or what? O.K. we'll give 'em a pass on this first episode in which the writers told caught us up on what the heroes did on their summer vacation.

Claire (Hayden Panettiere) and family are doing the whole witness protection thing in California where Dad (Jack Coleman) asks her to be "entirely un-extraordinary." She follows his wishes even though she SO wanted to pull off that double-tuck in the gym. Meanwhile, Dad's working at Copy Kingdom and nearly kills his mean ol' pipsqueak of a boss during his coffee break.

Hiro finds out his hero is really a drunk Englishman (David Anders) who's more interested in his next sake than his future as a hero.

Matt (Greg Grunberg), the mind-reading cop, got a divorce, got
himself a job as NY detective and his now caring for Molly, the young girl who can find anybody. (Though we're left to wonder what happened to his pregnant ex.)

Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) is still providing deep, deep voiceovers. He's also being wooed by the Company, and during a recruitment lunch, sees that Company gets its deep financial resources from a man with the Midas touch - literally.

Sorry, "Veronica Mars" fans. No sign of Kristin Bell yet who will turn up in a future episode as Elle, a slightly off-kilter hero. But we do meet the brother-sister team of Alejandro and Maya Herrera (Shalim Ortiz and Dania Ramirez) who are making the long trek from Mexico to New York where they believe they'll find a cure for Maya's little problem of inflicting the plague.

Some questions were answered last night. After sabotaging his political career to save New York, Nathan is a drunken, bearded mess who should never look in the mirror again (Was that freaky, or what?). Peter shows up alive in Ireland with no signs of being all blown-up -- although he is handcuffed to a storage bin.

The last 10 minutes gave us the most action in this dialogue-heavy hour, Is that really the end of Hiro's dad Kaito (George Takei) at the hands of a Sylar look-alike? (or Sylar himself?).
We've got all season to figure it out -- let's hope the writers can keep the intrigue working all season this time around.

Last point:

Doubt that it was Sylar. It is one of the remaining 9(?) of the older generation, as Kaito said to mommy-dearest.

It struck me last night how much watching Heroes is like reading Spiderman in the newspaper comic pages. It takes so long for anything to happen that, when it finally does -- and no matter what it is -- it is always a disappointment.

A few other observations:

One of the nice features of the show was that it regularly killed off its characters. Doing so helps introduce new twists, allows for a greater breadth of characters (in part by keeping cast salaries down). It also avoids the radical personality shifts that characters undergo when the writers start to run out of ideas (see ER, seasons 3 through present... or Nathan last night.) It was a mistake to keep Sylar alive, but it was a much bigger one to bring Peter back.

Now that it is canceled, why not bring the cast of Painkiller Jane over to hunt down the heroes? The sinister corporate plots and the random special powers are pretty much the same on both shows, but Heroes could use some military efficiency.

While we're at it, why not let the dead chick from Desperate Housewives do the voiceover at the beginning of each episode. She wouldn't even have to change her spiel -- the Wisteria Lane nonsense is just as pertinent and meaningful to the plot as the drek that Mohinder spews each week. (Please, please, kill him off soon.)

And while we're doing crossovers, why not let that idiot Journeyman jump back a half hour to save the cheerleader...

Wait- that was Peter in the cargo box? Really?

Garrgh, now I REALLY hate this show...

I was hoping for a little more action from the season premiere, there could of been less time spent on Claire's Dad at work, and more about the virus and peter and nathan and the new bad guy with the eyes.

btw .. i really do not like parkman, he is so annoying thinking he can take on everyone, first sylar (he gets shot) and now this new guy, get a grip dude you can read peoples minds you are not invincible.

I don't think it was Sylar. I have a feeling that it's a woman. The shape was small and thin, not that of a man.

The reason TV shows shy away from action is it's cheaper to put actors on a set and let them talk. If you do action, you've got effects, location shots, and a bunch of stuff that runs up the budget.

Why do you think all these superman TV shows always have a lot of plot lines where "superman doesn't want to use his powers" because it's cheaper.

The cheapest shows is where you take a young cuties, put them on screen and have them slightly undressed. It gets ratings, costs nothing to write, and less to tape.

So last year, the show is a success, the network said "great, more shows, but we're giving you less budget". So this is what you get.

It's only a matter of time before they do a musical episode. Or one where the lead character doesn't talk. Or "a very special Heros".

It's funny.

I am an actual fan of Heroes. I don't mind all the talking that went on, it built up suspense and then leaves us hanging for next week. You guys only hate it because it leaves us hanging every time, and you're too impatient for next week. Do us a favor and watch them all at once on DVD. Sure, I am a little upset that both Nathan and Peter are somehow alive. Nathan at least should not be. It has to be a little realistic, I guess we'll find out.

Loved the show last night and I don't think that was Sylar either. Although I agree that he should have bit it last season. Parkman continues to irk me. One last gripe; the company has a guy who can turn things into gold but nobody in the outfit can listen in on phonecalls?

Oh and I think that Hiro is the actual hero and not the drunken English man.

Posted by: petal | September 25, 2007 3:20 PM

Hmmm, I'm thinking that it was actually peter who was coming after Takei, and he'd been brainwashed or something. Recall that he was wearing the weird evil symbol that marked Takei for death when he was found in the freight container.

Also, I think the Nathan mirror thing may have been a big hint that Nathan is not as he seems. Perhaps were seeing the scarred face of sylar, who is now using his shape shifting power to assume Nathan's identity, as he we know he was inclined to do from the "future" episode. That would also explain why Nathan appears alive.

I concur that its probably going to be Hiro being his own hero... so to speak.

I thought Alejandro and Maya Herrera were making the even longer trek from Honduras (or at least through) where the lempira is the unit of currency.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 25, 2007 3:37 PM

While the episode was a bit talky, I do like the new twists introduced this season: the mutant plague, the mysterious symbols marking folks for death, the "original 9" linked to the Company. However, I hope it's not either Peter or Sylar who's coming after Takei and the others - that would be a bit too predictable.

As for Nathan's outcome: really interesting. I just hope the writers go somewhere with it rather than have him sulk and brood constantly. I had enough of that with Peter last season. (I think what Nathan saw in the mirror was a burned and scarred Peter - a haunted reflection.)

Oh, and I think it's pretty obvious that Hero is going to become his own hero.

Useless, terrible show. The only thing worse than Peter in the box was the horrible, horrible Irish accents of the other actors in the scene. As they say in Co. Cork, "oy vey!"

I love this show. I definitely think Hiro is going to end up being the hero. Sylar is definitely alive; maybe he is Nathan? Peter probably wouldn't have died in the explosion, but Nathan doesn't have the regenerating power that Peter got from Claire.

ps - in DC, my DVR didn't record the episode... I wonder if other people had that issue; maybe the ratings were a bit off?

The episode wasn't too talky for loyal fans, but I wonder whether it will do a good job of hooking first-time viewers? We'll see!

And Claire's new flying boyfriend seems a little sketchy - does the company know where they are after all? They should, considering how resourceful they're supposed to be..

I hope Mrs. Patrelli doesn't die; she's fantastic and we still don't know what she does!

Not to be rude, but how many of you have read comic books? Comics start off slowly with discussions and vague plot lines because if it was strictly all action then the stories would be trite and boring. This show isn't about superheroes stopping bank robberies, its about people who find out they have powers and try to figure out what to do with them.

And also, who didn't see Peter being able to stay alive, he didn't manage to copy Claire's ability to heal. Remember the episode when Hiro goes to the future and we find out that Peter did blow up in that timeline, but he was still alive. The virus will be explained in fuller detail I am sure of it, they mentioned it last season, but didn't have any plot time left to explain it.

I have a theory that Silar is most likely dead and maybe Peter absorbed part of him during their fight and Silar is manifesting himself in Peter.

I agree that the season premiere was somewhat boring, but I didn't think there was too much talking. The season premiere reminded me of some parts of "The Matrix" that were down-right boring and chatty but necessary to help explain the action. If you remember the first couple of episodes from Season One of "Heroes," there was more talking than action. I think the problem is that now our expectations are so high (I know mine are) that we are disappointed everytime New York isn't in danger, or Sylar isn't killing someone, or Jessica/Nikki isn't stripping/prostituting or something like that.

However, it's very clear that, barring some new breakout character like Dania Ramirez, they are setting up Hayden Panettiere to be the center of the show for the forseeable future. Everywhere you look now-a-days, it's Hayden-this, Hayden-that, Hayden in a bathing suit, Hayden threatening to kill someone, Hayden and Milo Ventimiglia, something. I think Ali Later (Nikki/Jessica) was originally designed to be the requisite sex symbol, but they are really positioning Hayden to be the sweet-but-sexy star of the show for the men and Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrilli) to be the sweet-but-sexy star for the ladies.

The episode was definitely weak. There were too many attempts at inside humor (the dinner scene - anything special happen to YOU today?) than an action show should have. I was very annoyed by the saccharin elements in this episode. The thing that drew me to Heroes was its gritty nature. Yeah, people do get killed. Last night, they dipped all the goodwill in a vat of caramel and sprinkled powdered sugar on top.

I never figured Peter would die, but I think Nathan and Sylar should have.

Season 1 was a very self-contained arc, about the bomb in NY (first mentioned in the pilot) and Sylar (who I believe wasn't mentioned until the 2nd ep), and it ended with the bomb and Sylar being killed (or not, as it turned out). They're starting a new story now, and basically have to start over fresh. The first couple episodes of the first season were a bit slow and talky too.. it takes a little while to build momentum.

Uh, am I the ONLY one who recognized the guy who came after George Takei as Ricaldo Montalban as Khan?

Posted by: Nathan | September 25, 2007 5:31 PM

I like the show, but the writers are putting less thought into this season so far.

I'm having a hard time with Peter's amnesia, simply because he should have absorbed (or whatever you call it) Charlie's total recall power through Sylar.

Parkman's quickie divorce was a convenient plot device to put him in NYC, where all the action is.

And what kind of copy shop clerk gets work-related calls at his huge house that he has to take in private?

Posted by: Issues with season 2 | September 25, 2007 6:06 PM

Uh, how could you guys think Sylar died at the end of last season? They made a point of doing a close-in shot of a subway grate, with a blood trail leading to it. It seemed to me like an obvious hint that he lived. Sure, theoretically he could have lived to crawl in the sewer, and then died over the summer. But where's the fun in that? Main enemy dies in off-season away from the screen? Yeah right.

I'm just glad someone finally gave Peter a decent haircut. The emo bangs were really getting on my nerves.

(besides, all the smart girls want Mohinder - only little fanbrats were taken in by Peter's emo bangs)

This show has never been a non-stop action fest. It would feel... wrong if it were. I suppose there will always be that segment of any audience which is always going to be disappointed if there isn't a big lights and explosions show, but whatever. Asking for 'more action' really kind of belies that you're watching the show more because it is popular than for the value of the show itself.

The first season was always more about a slow exploration of who these people with powers were, what was happening to them, and how they could stop it than about the action packed confrontations.

This season is off to a strong start, revealing that there are still many secrets to learn about (for both the characters and the audience) and plenty more people with gifts that will empower them to become Heroes.

Hayden's going to have some real competition soon. Kristin Bell will be appearing during this season. The Cheerleader versus Veronica Mars?

Ms. Bell is a talented actor who can do 'cute blond intelligent sexy' extremely well. She will be an asset.

BTW, because the actor's name was somehow left out of the posting itself (while every other character name was followed by the name of the actor playing him/her), Hiro is played by Masi Oka.

Where the hell is Niki/Jessica? She is my favourite. I love that she can kick ass so well. And the whole family is awesome. I was sure they'd be in the second episode this season but no. I want more Niki/Jessica and family!
