'Heroes'' New Hellion

Veronica Mars, you are one mean Hero.

Kristen Bell, former star of the cultish UPN/CW detective show, made her much-heralded debut on "Heroes" Monday night, and, before the credits rolled, her character Elle had already made toast out of one unlucky Irishman.

Straight from "Mars": actress Kristen Bell. (AP Photo/NBC)

Elle is in Ireland on the hunt for Peter P., and the bloke she wasted -- via electrical bolts shot from her fingertips -- was the brother of the lass that P.P. is dating. (Although that relationship may be over soon -- did you see the expression on her face when Peter did the whole eyes-turn-white-painting-the-future thing?)

We think Elle is working for the Company, right? (Help me out here, people!) But who's her Daddy that she spoke to on her Sprint cellular phone ("Heroes" sure does love its product placements, doesn't it?).

Meanwhile back in the states, Nathan flew Matt presumably on his back (after a lame joke about Matt being "cargo load") to Philadelphia so Matt could confront Daddy about taking poor Molly hostage in her brain. Apartment #9 where Daddy lives turned out to be a Kafkaesque nightmare where Nathan and Matt had horrible visions and wound up on the living room floor beating the holy heck out of each other.

What was THAT all about?

In N'Orleans, Micah clued Monica in on why she's able to make pretty tomatoes with a paring knife and become a WWE All-Star at a moment's notice. Monica's coming to grips with her newfound powers and learned even more cool things like how to jump-rope double-dutch style and move like Bruce Lee!

Hiro, please come home. We're tired of you living in your own version of "Shogun." You're NOT going to get the girl. Get over it.

We need Hiro back home -- Veronica Mars and those fingernails of hers seem pretty dangerous.

"a Kafkaesque nightmare"

Nice one.

I think that the writers are running out of powers and starting to recycle the old ones. Monica has muscle memory, while Charlie has mental memory; California flyboy has the same power as Nathan; Elle shoots lightning bolts from her hands, while Claire's bio-mother shoots flames; and Matt's Daddy has Matt's powers and those of the Metamorphosis woman killed by Sylar (more Kafka for ya). When are we going to see superspeed, forcefields, and elasticity - or should I netflix The Incredibles?

What's with all these new characters? Am I the only one that thinks there were plenty to begin with in Season 1? Now there are so many that their story lines have to track in separate episodes. Haven't seen the Latin Americans in a while. Must be waiting for the next show to pick that thread up again along with Sylar's. Ho hum.

"Lost" became notorious for this and it becomes rather tedious after awhile. Sad to see "Heroes" suffering the same fate.

Hmmm...I think there's Parkman and his dad have similar powers b/c they're...duh...related? So now, Parkman has a chance to see what he might be able to with his powers.

Have missed something, or has Mrs. Petrelli revealed a power? She's in that mysterious picture that keeps showing up...and everyone else seems to have powers - what about her?

And Elle's power of electricity - how is that connected with Peter's ability? Again, maybe I missed something last year, but who did Peter absorb that power - maybe that's Elle's "Daddy"?

And, I think that Elle is the blond in picture #8 (the one with HRG shot), not Claire - but HRG doesn't know that b/c he doesn't know about her.

But those are just my theories about the season so far...

Posted by: MNGirl | October 23, 2007 1:16 PM

The important thing here is that they have stopped talking and started MOVING. After a couple of weeks of set-up with the new characters and new situations, all of the story lines are thrown into dramatic crisis with real action using their powers.

I also think the effort to shoot the series to look like comic book panels is succeeding.

Bell does nicely as a no-rules homicdal maniac type.

i agree that the stories have started moving, get peter out of ireland immediately, and lose the fake accent irish girl, too.

don't like elle...didn't need her and that super perky cheerleadery voice she uses (okay, dance team, since we already have a cheerleader) is feckin' annoying.

In a world where everyone seems to be "special," no one is special. Heroes has become one big bore--and this after only one season!

If I had a list of all the actresses in Hollywood with which I'd like to make a little "mattress magic", said list would be as long as a Norman Mailer novel - with detailed bibliography. That said, if I had a choice - every one of those wishes come true vs. an "ancient evening" with Kristen Bell and those goldielocks - put a match to 'em, honey. You're just right.

Let me begin with my gripes. Suresh is increasingly irritating. Why on earth would he take Molly to the company? Aren't you there to find out more about those people and take them down?

Agreed that Hiro should look into getting back to present day. I think he's got the hero and lady love together, now step back and let the thing play out. Although I did think he would turn out to be the hero.

Onto the good stuff.I got excited seeing a taste of what Parkman's dad can do. It gives me a little hope for Parkman.

I'd love to know what Mrs. Petrelli's power is and what the dad could do.

I was a little let down by Elle's power until she turn dude to burnt toast. Somehow I don't think her dad is not part of the company but I could be horribly wrong.

I'm wondering when their going to address that period of time between Nathan flying off with Peter and now.

Good episode.

What it was about with Parkman and Nathan beating each other up is that Parkman's father is a powerful projective telepath. He has control enough to make each of them see an image from their nightmares, and to correlate the two false visions so that they interact with each other without realizing it. Sustaining that projection shows a lot of power of a very subtle character.

I've admired Kristen Bell since her first appearance in Deadwood, and look forward to what she can bring to the show.

I also liked the return to share the joy of discovery of talents by a new "Hero." I'm still enjoying the show.

Posted by: Baron Elric | October 23, 2007 3:37 PM

Kristen Bell is overrated. I can't stand her. Way too perky and makes dumb little annoying faces that no one in real life would ever make. This isn't stage acting, Kristen, lay off the indicating.

Posted by: Jessica | October 23, 2007 3:52 PM

I've thought perhaps that Peter Petrelli picked up the electro-shock thingy in between seasons when he may have already encountered Elle...whatcha guys think?

Posted by: Nick | October 23, 2007 3:55 PM

'Sad to see "Heroes" suffering the same fate [getting tedious with too many characters and storylines].'

Obviously you're a half-season behind. This happened long ago. I stopped watching during the first season when the intro stretched so long that it was really in need of a commercial break.

Posted by: lotp | October 23, 2007 3:56 PM

"Let me begin with my gripes. Suresh is increasingly irritating. "

Yeah, Suresh is turning out to be one big wuss. He's whiny and too unsure of himself. His father would be ashamed to see him act like this. You can see why the dad left Mohinder behind in India when he came to the States.

Come on, Suresh! Act like you've got a pair, dude!

question: for the folks that have posted to the effect that heroes is "over"...why are you posting on this site? why do you care what people who are still watching (and enjoying) heroes are saying?
i know how you feel, i liked "lost" during the first season but then i moved on. i don't go posting on "lost" sites to tell people that "lost" is lame.
move on to your next show and leave the hero gab to those of us who care.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 23, 2007 5:07 PM

Oy! John P...I wonder if you could be right. That would certainly explain the Xtreme and annoying perkiness of Elle.

Posted by: methinks | October 23, 2007 5:08 PM

I thought "who's your daddy" was answered in "Leave It to Beaver." Anyway, the real question is, did she have backup?

Posted by: Mr. Natrual | October 23, 2007 5:13 PM

I am not sure that Peter has the lightning power first. It seemed to be more like Ted's radiation power he used on the Irish guy.

I don't think that Mrs Patrelli has any powers. Kaito Nakamora didn't show any powers and neither does Noah Bennet and they are both in the picture. Remember in the first season they told Mr. Bennet that they always teamed up a non-powered person with someone who had powers.

Posted by: michael | October 23, 2007 5:52 PM

Kirsten Bell is over-rated and her acting was subpar at best. I don't see why all the reviewers make a big deal of her addition especially since she's not any better than the wonder twins, or worst, West.

I think all of the new characters are unnecessary. With the exception of Monica, they are just slowing down the plot. If we didn't have them, the plot would have flowed faster. There's no need to introduce them and cause every single character to move all around the world and have separate plot.

Posted by: Tabris | October 23, 2007 6:30 PM

Sprint technology doesn't work in Ireland does it?

Posted by: As_if | October 23, 2007 7:28 PM

This was the first episode of the season that I really liked. The whole thing with Parkman's Dad was pretty creepy and straight forward classic comic book material. I enjoyed watching Monica discover her powers - but then that was my favorite part of Spider-Man movie. My only two gripes for last night's show: Can we send Molly off in a shipping container or at least keep her in a coma for the remainder of the series. Two, they need to ditch the Shogun Hiro plotline about 4 episodes ago!

---------------

Maybe Montreal is this season's Kirby Plaza. All the Heroes meet there and HRG gets whacked.

Posted by: Connor MacLeod | October 23, 2007 9:23 PM

So much not to like about current season.

The Molly and her two dads sequence is like fingernails against a chalkboard. Kill Molly NOW! I would have said to kill Parkman as well but he has some potential with the potential expansion of his power.

Note that he is now the fourth character that has that power (making people see what you want). The brunette that held Micah was first, Chick who held Sylar was second, Parkman's dad is third. recycling powers is a sign of lazy writers.

Please tell me they are not going to waste Ms Nichols for the whole season. It would be a crime if she ends up not having a power.

The Peter storyline is horrendous. I have to rob a bank because they wont give me the box with my identify? Didnt you just move a freaking armored car by thinking about it? This is awful, get him out of Ireland and into a real plot.

Claire and her uber-functional family? she's better off on her own. But, the company can track flyboy which means its just a matter of time before they put the smackdown on her.

And whats up with killing D.L.? Is hHeroes going to develop the same patterns as Lost? Kill all the black characters? Granted, D.L. was a boring character. But that was the writers fault. In reality, his power is the most interesting. Its not a brute force power but a strategic power. He could have ruled the world.

Making all the Heroes related to each other is another sign of lazy writers.

Please God, have Sylar kill the latino brother and sister. They are sooo annoying, they're power is stupid and all they have to offer is weakness. They should die, die, die!

OK, my rant is over. Except to say, Molly mmust die!

Posted by: Losing Patience | October 24, 2007 12:10 AM

I'm sorry, but how is the chick who plays Monica a better actress than Kristen Bell and how his her character any better than Elle? Your just saying it to try and bring Kristen down. I'm sick of people acting like Monica is this awesome character when she isn't.

I hate how people are bringing down Kristen Bell for the sake of doing so just because everyone likes her. Get over it.

Anyways an enjoyable episode. I predict Caitlyn is next to bite the dustand that Elle's dad is Nightmare Man!

"Note that he is now the fourth character that has that power (making people see what you want). The brunette that held Micah was first, Chick who held Sylar was second, Parkman's dad is third. recycling powers is a sign of lazy writers."

Ok, the first two are the same character. And she (Betty/Candice/Michelle/whoever) has a somewhat different power from Parkman's dad (and presumably Parkman, if he can actually do the same thing).

I'm glad they "recycle" powers... it'd be ridiculous if no one ever had the same ability.

"And whats up with killing D.L.? Is hHeroes going to develop the same patterns as Lost? Kill all the black characters?"

Ok, that's stupid, and pretty much proves the point that you're not worth listening to. Had some other responses to your post but it's not worth bothering with.

Posted by: acheron2112 | October 24, 2007 10:03 AM

"But, the company can track flyboy "

Maybe not. In the companion comic bo... excuse me, graphic novels, Hana Gintleman blew up the tracking satellite.
But that brings up the question of how they are able to track Monica, or any pre-Hero. I suppose they can just launch another satellite too.

"Making all the Heroes related to each other is another sign of lazy writers."

Not that the writers aren't lazy, but if there is a genetic basis for the powers, then making the characters an extended family just makes sense (if you ignore the incest potential). It may also explain how they are able to track pre-Heroes with a genealogical database.

Posted by: Connor MacLeod | October 24, 2007 11:05 AM

Connor MacLeod: I'm sure they use something similar to formula developed by Monhinder's father to predict the occurrence of a special in the world.

Posted by: Slung | October 24, 2007 2:22 PM

Oh yeah. The formula. I'd forgotten about that (What can you expect? I'm 600 years old).

Posted by: Connor MacLeod | October 24, 2007 3:25 PM

A few speculations on some of the questions raised:

1) Elle's "Daddy" could be the Company man working with Suresh (Bob?) or just a joke (Alright, "Mom," I'll eat my veggies).

2) Since the explanation for the powers that are exhibited by the "Heroes" seems to revolved around revolutionary genetic changes, it would seem they are all probably related to the "powers" of the mind that the pseudo-science of parapsychology has classified. Telekinesis would explain all of the flying, matter manipulation (DL walking thru walls), energy emmissions, and superstrength. Telepathy covers Matt, his Dad, Molly and some others. Clairvoyance is perfect for our dead artist friend. A mix of telepathy, telekinesis and a hyper version of muscle memory (there is such a thing) and eidetic memory could even cover Monica's "muscle memory." A variety of "powers" that we know of and other unrevealed abilities could be explained this way.

3)The abilities of Hiro are the hardest to explain, with the whole time-travelling backwards thing. Forwards could actually be explained with some stretchy physics, but backwards? Pretty hard to explain.

4) As to the repetition of powers. The family-tree explanations seems to be the Occam's Razor for this question. Would make sense that the human race might have branched out at one point with genetic mutations, that would allow certain characteristics to be reinforced (and duplicated) down thru time and with different individuals.

Just my 2 cents worth :-)

How come everyone is wondering why Peter has the power to shock, am I the only that remember that Peter has everyone's power within, but of course he merely has to see it or feel it's presence in order to use it, his powers aren't absorbed he already has them. Now that he has lost his memory the powers that he is currently using is just pure instinctual.

Posted by: JP | October 25, 2007 3:36 PM

Everyone seems confused about Peter being able to shoot those bolts of electricity. THey don't come from Ted and his going nuke powers - different visual. And Peter didn't have this power last season. So it stands to reason that he absorbed them during the 'four-month' gap between season 1 and 2. Let's see who has electrical powers in season 2 - Ah, yes, Elle. It's not that difficult jump in logic, given the fact that Elle is looking for Peter that sometime during the '4 month' gap that Peter met Elle and absorbed her powers
