'The Office' Goes Commercial
It was a brisk, back-to-the-basics episode of "The Office" Thursday night. Yes, it works so much better in the half-hour format.
Can we all agree that Michael's homemade commercial for Dunder Mifflin, with all its flaws (and there were many), was so much better than that corporate version that they were forced to air on local TV.
And what a slogan: "Limitless paper in a paperless world." Classic.

Gimme a break, gimme a break: Andy moves in on Angela. (NBC Photo: Byron J. Cohen)
Why we love Creed so much -- "She's crazy hot," he said about mystery writer Sue Grafton. O.K., that's not so funny to read (or write) but when Creed says it, it's funny. And how about a pat on the back for Phyllis in her failed attempt to lure Grafton for a celebrity cameo on the commercial. Poor thing.
I like that the episode took a break from advancing any of the relationship plots this week (Michael-Jan, Pam-Jim, Andy-Angela, etc.) - I'm intrigued by all of them but it was nice to take a week off.
The one relationship factoid we did learn was that Andy and Angela have advanced to necking now. Literally necking - as in rubbing each other's necks together. Always sensitive Andy is hoping Dwight will give him some secrets on how to get to "first" with the blonde ice queen.
And folks, what do we think: when Andy relayed to Dwight that Angela moaned "D" during a recent "necking" session, was it "D" as in "An-Deee" or "D" for Dwight? (My money's on Dwight).
One last thought: how awesome was Darryl on the keyboards singing that Dunder-Mifflin jingle? More Darryl, please!

my only complaint was having that Kit Kat jingle in my head all night.. it was fun to see Jim save the day at Poor Richard's. and his slightly territorial hug of Pam..

YES -- Andy muffing up the Kit Kay lyrics was terrific. And ending the show with Andy convinced the commercial is for Fancy Feast? Priceless.

Yes, this episode was the best in some time. I think maybe doing a commercial would be a good exercise for a lot of offices - but it would be hard to top Scranton's

I thought there was an interesting moment when Pam discovered Jim's second life avatar, the "Philly sportswriter." There's a subtle suggestion there that Jim secretly would rather be doing something else with his life. You wonder if that, along with Pam's efforts to do graphic design, will become a theme.

i thought the same thing, TL. they don't need to go overboard w/it but it would be an interesting way to develop the characters w/out rushing them deeper into the relationship and making us all sick of it in the process. gradual discovery, office writers...gradual discovery...

Or maybe not a theme but--gasp--a spinoff!

This season is uncharted territory for the office. In both the UK and US versions of the office the story has been about the un-requited love between Tim/Dawn and Jim/Pam. Only the US version tries to deal with the question of wether there is life after they get together. The other constant is that until now Davis Brent/Michael Scott are always, always, always wrong and wrong in the most embarrasing manner. This episode is also a significant departure in that way also. I just hope in trying to prolong series life it doesn't turn into the last few years of "Cheers" or "Happy Days".

How about the subtle genius of Dwight spending so much time on "Second Life" that his avatar created a "Second Second Life"...absolutely brilliant...

The "Jim as Underachiever" theme has played out before. Two season ago Jim was going to take a trip to avoid Pam's wedding and Ryan, of all people, never believed it. He said something to thte effect that Jim eats a ham and cheese sandwich every single day. He's not going anywhere. This will surface again.
I was a bit underwhelmed by the episode. Perhaps because of a certain World Series game happening?? Go Sox!

I see trouble on the horizon for Jim and Pam, because Jim is a true slacker (the sarcastic type) while Pam would actually like to better herself. Jim's first reaction to Pam putting effort into coming up with a logo (or something like that) was on the order of "you gotta be kidding," but when he saw she was serious he let it slide. Jim and Pam will learn that you can't base a romance on who can come up with the first put-down of someone who's easy to make fun of.
