'Grey's' Chainsaw Madness

It's trick or treat on "Grey's Anatomy."

Meredith decides to try to be less messed up by disposing of her evil doctor mother's ashes. So she dumps Dr. Mom's Ashes into a plastic Ziploc bag and takes them in to work.

Bailey's looking forward to the arrival on Halloween night of Seattle's Too Dumb to Live population -- the ones who participate in the annual chainsaw pumpkin carving contest.

Callie tells everyone that henceforth Izzie must direct all her questions to Bailey instead of Callie -- they're now a sort of defacto Chief Resident Team -- because Izzie's slept with Callie's husband. Now everyone knows and Izzie, naturally, is filled with self-pity now that Callie -- the woman whose husband she shagged -- has outed her and made people think of her as a husband shagger.

Izzie did a bad, bad thing -- and everyone knows it. (ABC/Scott Garfield)

Bailey meets a nutcase who insists his crazily twitching left foot is not his own and he wants it cut off. Bailey refuses and prescribes some anti-crazy meds. Introducing a guy with a crazily twitching left foot he claims is not his own in the first act of a "Grey's Anatomy" episode is like introducing a knife in the first act of a Broadway play. Somehow, you know, by the third act, that foot and that guy are not going to be attached.

Meanwhile, Meredith, plows into McDreamy in the hospital hallway, and spills Mom on the floor. "This is me trying to love," is how she explains the ashes, squinting sweetly. Naturally, McDreamy -- the guy who last week told Meredith he wanted to marry her and grow old with her and he would wait for her until she got herself straightened out, decides he has to start dating other people. He tells Chief the big news.

Cute kid of one of the hospital's cafeteria workers is Trick or Treating all over the hospital for a free pair of ears -- he has none. He's adorable, so Meredith decides to spend the rest of the episode lining up all the staff needed to do the pro bono earjob on this kid. Does Meredith ever perform surgery any more?

Norm the Oldest Intern tells Alex he's not feeling well. Having Norm the Oldest Intern announce in the first act of a "Grey's Anatomy" episode he is not feeling great is like introducing a knife in Act 1 of a Broadway play. By the third act, you just know, Norm is going to be at death's door.

A really stupid guy comes to the emergency room with a cut off finger. Yes, he's part of Seattle's Too Dumb to Live demographic group, and has cut off his finger with a chain saw while trying to carve a pumpkin. While Bailey -- who, remember, has a thing for the Chain Saw Pumpkin Carvers -- tends to his hand, Stupid Guy looks around and notices his chain saw is missing. Let's overlook for a minute the fact that a hospital emergency room allowed a guy to bring a chainsaw into the ER, shall we? Suddenly, the noise of a chain saw can be heard. Bailey runs to the source of the noise and arrives just in time to see -- wait for it -- the nutcase guy chainsawing off his crazily twitching left foot.

This brings Callie and McSteamy together to tend to nutcase guy and foot, after which McSteamy tells Callie he's heard about her cheating louse of a husband and if he can do anything to help cheer up Callie, she should just call on him, night or day, preferably night. McSteamy telling Callie to call on him at night for "cheering up" in the second act of a "Grey's Anatomy" episode is like introducing a knife in the second act of a Broadway play. You just know by the November sweeps McSteamy is going to "cheer up" Callie -- at night.

With just minutes to go in the episode, during some surgery or another, Norm the Oldest Intern collapses on the OR floor and, turns out, he has some major blood clot and nearly dies. After surgery, Norm comes to his senses and decides to pursue a career in psychiatry.

And, in the end, Earless Boy gets his ears, an angel gets its wings, and Meredith dumps Dr. Mom's Ashes down the drain at the hospital because, she says, it's what Dr. Mom would have wanted.

Having Meredith dump Dr. Mom's ashes down the drain in the third act of a Grey's Anatomy" episode is like...

you didn't mention the best part! alex and rebecca were so sweet... well, there was more sex than sweet but it was still nice. I'd like to see Alex "be the beggar" next.

what an awful, awful, train wreck of a show.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 11:11 AM

I don't think there's anything they can do to make Izzy and George a believable couple. Or a sympathetic couple. Or anything we would tune in to find out more about. They are bringing the show down - there are more interesting characters, and even George and Izzy used to be more interesting.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 11:14 AM

A telling moment: Bailey's lecture to George about issues not being black or white...made me wonder whether he'll think about it and stick with the Izz. I can see it now: G&I break up, he goes crying back to C, and she's with McSteamy. That was a weird return and departure of Rebecca, but it gave Alex some screen (not dialogue) time.

you are so hilarious, Ms de Mo! I don't even have to watch, it's so great! Your 2 minute read saves me 58 minutes of stupidity.

Posted by: Jessica | October 26, 2007 11:40 AM

I might be crazy, but it seems like the writers have set up George and Izzie to have zero sexual chemistry. The only time they had sex was when they were both wasted and this season they have not kissed and it seems like there is almost an awkwardness between them when it comes to chemistry. Granted, I love Callie and am really disappointed with this whole Gizzie thing, but with the preview for next week buidling up about how they're finally going to have sex, I think they might realize that their chemistry is non-existent and their new "relationship" is based on emotional dependancy in light of the deaths of those close to them. So, my bet is that they won't last long.

Posted by: Christina | October 26, 2007 12:03 PM

You left out the part about the daughter/father heart transplant and the new (female) chief of cardiac surgery telling off Christina for sleeping with her two previous mentors.
The whole George/Izzie thing seems contrived and not believable. Same with George marrying Callie in the first place. It's like the script writers are trying too hard and coming up with these plot twists that seem inconsistent with the characters' personalities.
My favorite thing so far this season was when Izzie resuscitated the deer in the back of the pickup truck. I laughed so hard!

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 12:23 PM

is it just me, or did the actress playing Eva get a LOT more attractive halfway through the episode. My house is convinced they've switched actresses and therefore must plan on keeping her character around for a bit.

Posted by: klta | October 26, 2007 12:24 PM

Lisa - I can't stand Grey's Anatomy but I'm going to start reading your summary because its hilarious! I laughed so hard I almost had to go to the emergency room. And here I thought you only wrote great "Lost" commentaries!

Posted by: dre7861 | October 26, 2007 12:53 PM

klta -- I thought the exact thing about Ava/Rebecca. She looked like her usual weird self at first, and then at some point midway through, I was like, "Wow, she's pretty gorgeous. When did that happen?"

Posted by: graze | October 26, 2007 1:22 PM

used to watch this hellacious offense to entertainment, now can't stand it for more than 15 secs. (I either make my wife go downstairs to watch, or I leave)... LOL ... your summary was more entertaining than the entirety of however many episodes I saw before I became allergic, and is better than most of what passes for "entertainment" these days... keep it up!

Absolute garbage. This show can't be cancelled fast enough.

Posted by: Wow | October 26, 2007 2:30 PM

MoMo, loved your commentary! Too funny (and true). I am so sick of Gizzie: I wish they would hurry and fizzle out and get on with it. Callie and McSteamy would be a nice diversion, but I really want to see Ava's trailer trash husband take a trip down the hill to Seattle Gray and beat the crap out of McNasty. Now that would make for great TV. I hope McDreamy shags McSis because I am sooooooo sick of McWishy-Washy using her crazy mom and absent dad for being scaredy of relationships. Yawn, time for better plotlines.

Posted by: ms. peachy | October 26, 2007 2:34 PM

I could tolerate Izzy before but with the whole supposed love for George and the self pity and her not lack of care that Callie actually loved him, I can't stand her. I think she only wants George because she doesn't want him out of her life in anyway. So now he can stay with her and Meredith and things can be like the were but I feel it's going to fizzle because as someone stated before there's lil to no chemistry.

Surely Meredith could have put her mom in an urn and left her securely tucked under a cabinet or something. I kept thinking she's going to enter the drainage system and be even farther from the hospital than before. However, I get the symbolism.

Another one is going to bite the dust in terms of Bailey's marriage. I really think she should have stayed out of the surgery and been with her family. I think she should have been there.

Good show. Lots of old story arcs ended or bought up to date and some new ones introduced. But what is going on with Meridith's sister? She came out of the box like a serious plot influence, but seems now to be blending into the scenery.

Posted by: Paul Garneau | October 26, 2007 4:10 PM

Agree with the zero chemistry. I really love this show but know it is going to be hard to replace the solid characters from the prior two seasons.

It's like the pizzaz is gone. I will say Private Practice has plenty of it. Did they send the good writers over there as well?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 4:24 PM

Can't stand Izzy. I keep hoping for a major disaster a la ER, and luckily for the audience, that character would die off. George is bugging me. I'm glad they brought in the new heart surgeon. That will be interesting.

Posted by: Esteban | October 26, 2007 4:52 PM

Isn't it amazing how many of the doctors on the medical shows (like Oldest Intern) have a medical emergency and end up getting treated by their colleagues?

Posted by: Karen | October 26, 2007 5:14 PM

Lisa, I typically love you but i think your coverage of Grey's is way off base and doesn't do it justice. If you hate the show so much, why blog about it? You miss key plot points and try to use them for humor like:

1. the chainsaw you mention was not in the ER, it was in the clinic
2. derek does not in any way shape or form decide to start dating other people because of Meredith's moms ashes. He mentioned other people in his speech last week (yeah, he doesn't seem to understand that 'waiting' means not dating other people)
3. izzie was not filled with self-pity over callie's unprofessional announcement (Izzie and george didn't sleep together at work after all)

With all due respect, and lots of love, if you are going to recap the show, at least get all the plot points correct!

How can you completely overlook the Ava, alex storyline?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 5:41 PM

I LOVE Dr. Han. I am so glas she is back, although I debated who I would prefer more to fill the Burke role: her or Marlo. Him returning would have been great, too.

I am so glad that Ava is back. I think it will be a "Alex maturing" type stoyline.

I think Callie's character has really become a joke. I never really believed the chemistry between her and George, and now it's just terrible to watch her acting like she is.

I really liked the final scene with Meredith and the Chief.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 26, 2007 5:46 PM

Meredith's line was "This is me, trying to EVOLVE." Not "love." :-)

Posted by: divine ms k | October 26, 2007 7:57 PM

"Grey's Anatomy" has jumped the shark! It is not realistic that Izzie would ever be with a dweeb like George. And he should never have outed himself as gay, b/c now no one can see him as a female's love interest. Also, what are Meredith's redeeming qualities? She's not hot at all and nowhere near in McDreamy's league. Plus all the over-the-top emotional melodrama is worse than an afternoon Soap. It's so over, I never watched it after the icky pairing of Izzie and George- Blech!! Done!

Posted by: HAK in NoVa | October 26, 2007 10:12 PM

My favorite characters were Christine and Burke. Now that he is gone, the show holds little of my interest. He allowed her to be as goofy and crazy as she wanted to be even as she demonstrated that some of the most brilliant doctors have a lot of frailties. Without her off-beat character in play, I'm afraid that Grey's is going downhill, and fast. Bring Burke back and get rid of that dweeb George. Izzy should have been cut after the first season.

Posted by: Mary | October 26, 2007 10:38 PM

Everyone here needs to stop hating on Izzie. Have you all not been watching the show? Not only is Katherine Heigl the hottest woman on the planet, she consistantly gives the most powerful performances on the show. Did you not watch the Denny storyline? You want her off the show? Are you kidding me! The frustration about George and Izzie has to do with the lull in the storyline, as George detaches from Callie and starts to settle in with Izzie. There is clearly chemistry, which is why everyone has been waiting for him to clearly express his feelings for her and take her back to bed (where he rocked her world, by the way, unless you forgot). The only wrinkle will be if Callie pops up pregnant. Let's hope THAT doesn't happen...

Posted by: Anon | October 26, 2007 11:07 PM

It's a shame that the Gizzie plotline is keeping many viewers from continuing to appreciate Izzie's many wonderful qualities: as an intern and now as a resident she is the most empathetic with her patients. She is the most innovative and insightful. She is able to understand her patients and at the same time to discuss with them and often to persuade them of the right course of action for their lives (remember the Amish episode).

I just hope, along with most other viewers, that the relationship with George will end soon. I hope they stay friends but not romantically involved.

Posted by: Izzie's Good Qualities | October 27, 2007 12:15 AM

Hi. For those of you who were surprised to see key plot points from this episode missing from my blog -- so was I! Steamy Eva/Alex reunion, old guy in need of donor heart -- all there in blog when I delivered it to Washingonpost.com. I am looking in to it.

Posted by: L de Moraes | October 27, 2007 2:16 AM

The subplot of the man cutting off his foot was straight out of the worst episodes of "ER." And, that type of implausible and unrealistic writing is why I quit watching "ER" several years ago. I am keeping "Grey's" on a very short leash. If there is a helicopter crash or gunman in SGH, I'll become a former viewer. I'm also tiring of the anti-marriage slant of the show.

Posted by: coralman | October 27, 2007 7:06 AM

These characters are idiots and shouldn't be allowed within a mile of a real patient, child or relationship. This train wreck of a show would be best served by having the "doctors" adminster their own mercy killing, but they would be too self-involved to realize they missed the vein.

I am having a hard time swallowing this season's GA. I'm not as interested in it, lately when I start it on my dvr list, I do it with hesitation not excitement like I did before.

I am mostly interested in Ava/Rebecca and Alex getting together, that was hot! She is gorgeous...the makeup from the surgery didn't help the actress, that's why she seems so much better looking...McSteamy is the man!

Gizzie is okay, I'm waiting for that to begin, however I do feel that Izzie needs to be more empathetic towards Callie. Regardless of their lackluster marriage. That is a complete disregard to the vows that Callie and George made to one another. Callie preggo, omigod that would be awesome!

And Private Practice is fairing better in my opinion.

Posted by: Former GA fan | October 30, 2007 3:54 PM

As I look over my DVR-recorded episodes of this farce during my brief periods of lull in residency, I am absolutely aghast that I EVER had any interest in watching this. I wish I could say that I was drinking or on drugs, but...damn. What little life was there left with I.W. [a certain hater now on Bionic Woman, I think]. I'm sorry, but this has morphed into probably the worst medical show I've ever seen. It's sad, b/c it had some characters and actors that could really be worth something otherwise. There's no better way to describe it than as a train wreck, b/c you can't help but stare...

Posted by: Another Former GA Fan | October 30, 2007 7:08 PM

Oh, btw, Callie's character does have some redeeming qualities, at least...I'd almost agree with some others here and wish she'd get knocked up too [yes, pun intended], but look at who'd be her babydaddy...
