'The Office': Up a Legal Stream Without a (Ping-Pong) Paddle

The star of last night's "The Office"? You've gotta go with the tortured stenographer at Jan's absurd deposition who was forced to read back Michael's lines to the judge -- lines such as: "That's what she said" (twice) and "I have to go to the bathroom" (more than twice).

I love how she deadpanned both sayings. And how about Michael talking about his love of "the twins" that "hang off me lady's chest."

Dear Diary... (NBC Photo - Byron Cohen)

The ping-pong subplot started slow but kicked into high gear when we learned about Dwight's obsession with the sport and that his biggest heroes were all ping-pong players. (The first person out there in the blogosphere to recognize whom Dwight was playing ping pong with in the very last scene is totally cool -- though sorry, no cash prizes available.)

Despite all that went on in the incredibly awkward deposition (in which Michael blew Jan's case), Michael and Jan are still a couple. Last we saw, they were off for fast food (a sitdown Chinese meal is a bit too pricey for Michael).

As for Pam and Kelly -- oh yeah, it's on. Her trash-talking about Darryl's ping-pong dominance over Jim was inspired, and rose to a new level at show's end, when she put her own spin on the Avril Lavigne song:
"Hey, hey, I don't like your boyfriend
'Cause, 'cause , ' cause,' cause, 'cause he sucks at ping-pong."

Wasn't it Mose that Dwight was playing ping pong with at the end of the show?

Wasn't Dwight playing ping pong with his cousin Mose?

Ah! Thanks for identifying Mose. (And it's "milady," not "me lady.")

Kelly wasn't "talking trash". As she explained, she was "talking smack" because "talking trash" is about the hypothetical and "talking smack" is about the here and now.

Man it hurts to watch that show sometimes. Last night was one of those nights.

This episode was more interesting than it was funny. Michael gets screwed by everyone. Brian says he's a "nice guy", but Jan says he's incompetent. Ultimately, he sides with the company because they said something nice about him.

It confirmed what we mostly already knew, that Michael Scott would rather be likable than successful.

You almost want to like Michael Scott until he dumps Toby's lunch because he talked too much. Hilarious.

Last night was one of the more painful episodes to watch. It seems that whenever Michael is out of the office environment and in search of an audience, he crashes in the most horrifying ways (the party in the hotel room....). One question for the season is how major Jan's crackup is going to be--she's certainly headed toward that end. What incredible writing--go writers!

who's Mose (other than Dwight's cousin)?

Michael's hatred of Toby is totally unfounded. I can't help but feel totally sorry for Toby.

The scene with everyone reading their own copy of Michael's diary was astoundingly funny.

The truth comes out: Michael has the hots for Ryan!! Talk about uncomfortable. Any story lines related to this "crush" coming out (so to speak) in future episodes?
John, do you know how many more "new" Office episodes are left?

This episode was alternately laugh out loud funny and incredibly uncomfortable. It's amazing writing.

The show is also pretty accurate in it's portrayal of corporate office life. Just this week at my job, there were direct parallels between Jim's attempt to syncronize birthday celebrations and his ping pong competition.

To Tina Yothers Fan Club:

Bad news for you and all "Office" fans (or maybe good news if you haven't been digging the show this year). Last Thursday's "deposition" episode was indeed the last one for the foreseeable future, thanks to the writer's strike.

"The first person out there in the blogosphere to recognize whom Dwight was playing ping pong with in the very last scene is totally cool"

Was it really that difficult to tell?

If you had trouble identifying Mose, you either don't watch the Office very much or have a horrible memory.
