Osama bin Laden embraces his inner Al Gore

The al-Qaeda chief's recorded messages are ordinarily calls to arms against the West, warning of apocalyptic consequences for enemies of his puritanical strain of Islam. But the latest message, released Friday, is instead devoted to the consequences of climate change.

Rather than urging jihad, bin Laden says it is the religious duty of Muslims to "conduct studies on communities in river valleys in the Islamic world, and to consider what disasters may result from climate changes," according to a translation provided by the Site Intelligence Group.

The focus appears to have been driven by recent experience. Much of the 11-plus minute recording is spent describing the tragic aftermath of flooding in Pakistan. "There are millions of children in the open who lack suitable living conditions such as clean drinking water," bin Laden says. If the observations can be interpreted as first-hand, it would suggest that U.S. intelligence agencies are right that bin Laden remains in hiding in that country.

Bin Laden also laments that Muslim nations spend too much of their money on militaries, and outlines an agenda that includes development projects in disaster areas and better education for Muslims on "the danger of the over-usage of non-renewable groundwater in agriculture."

The previous bin Laden recording, in June, warmed of violent reprisals if the United States were to execute Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The headline is vile and stupid.

Fitting that Osama Bin Laden espouses the same philosophies as Al Gore, Barack Obama, and the Democrats on Capitol Hill.....yet another reason the Dems will be slaughtered in the midterms and Obama booted from the White House in 2012.

Great headline!!!!!

The communece' indicates the drifting of insurgent groups to interests wider than violence or fading as they get older as predicted by analysts such as Haviland Smith.
New crazies will arise even to strike the older.

Stupid, innacurate, cheapshot headline. When did Murdoch buy the Washington Post? (Underdeserving of italics or caps)

Posted by: BBear1 | October 1, 2010 3:58 PM | Report abuse

This year alone in DC, we've had record snow, heat and rain. A symptom of global warming is whacky weather, e.g. setting new records.

Anyone who doesn't believe in climate change has his/her head in the sand or has eyes only for short term profits.

Posted by: jgllo | October 1, 2010 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Why is the WaPost equating Bin Laden with Gore? I'll mirror the remarks of some of the other posters. Did Murdoch buy the paper? I know he owns the likes of George Will and Sour-Krauthammer but I didn't know that he owned the entire paper!

The Tea Party and the GOP are the anarchists. They're the ones denying climate change even in the face of increasing evidence.

Just more proof that the Conservatives in this country have their heads in the sand and their hands in our pockets.

Seems to me the real terrorists and anarchists are the conservatives jerks threatening to shoot anyone who doesn't agree with them and the politicians who refuse to call them on it.

I suppose the next thing will be Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh getting awards for insightful, fair and balanced journalism!!!

Climate change isn't a hoax to enrich Al Gore, it's a phenomenon understood by scientists all over the world. The headline should read "bin Laden smarter than Republicans."

Posted by: TonyQ82 | October 1, 2010 4:19 PM | Report abuse

This does not sound like the bin Laden from the Bush years.

Did he all of a sudden become "enlightened" about climate change, due to the Pakistani floods?

Why no word on those drone attacks in Pakistan from bin Laden?

I echo the WTF over this headline.

The headline is insulting and completely gratuitous.

Osama bin Laden is only doing what the socialist, Marxist, and communist leaders did who went underground. They joined the global warming movements, the animal rights movements, and the environmental movements. The socialist, Marxist, and communist saw that these groups wanted power and control over the masses much like they did. Look how much influence Al Gore has over the dummies who still believe in global warming. That is what Osama bin Laden is after. The dummies. If the dummies worked for Al Gore, bin Laden thinks it can work for the Muslims.

You folks really believe this bunk? The radicals within our own government that still have us believing that bin Laden is still alive & are doing wonders with the many small minds here in this country. Isn't technology grand when they can take a dead man and keep him make him into an environmentalist for their own political purposes now. Wonder what they'll have him come out with next? Any troop that has spent any time in Afghanistan would know better than to believe this hype.

Only a matter of time before conservative crazies Linbaugh and Beck are claming crazy greenies are in league with Al Qaida! Some sense is needed on climate change and pretty much every other issue in America. -

Al Gore Confronted in Tampa about Global Warming Again!!

This is going to be some fun, if I do say so!

The self-serving alarmism of global warming propagandists will now enable Bin Laden to claim (with Al Gore and the liberal Western media backing him up) that the U.S. and Western civilization caused the Pakistani floods and deaths.

What a pathetic joke. Not only are such global warming claims by Gore and the liberal media scientifically ridiculous, they are now stoking anti-U.S. fanaticism and jihad.

The heating of planet is not a hoax but Gore's claim that carbon dioxide was responsible for it is a hoax. It is the methane gas produced all over the world and also changes in the movements of earth around the sun. The dying of people in Pakistan due to floods reminds me of the statement by Pakistan and Egypt and Iran that the blowing up of the towers in New York was a planned step by the government of President Bush. Can we say now that drowning of so many children and adults was a plan of the government of Pakistan and Osama Bin Laden to let the water flow by demolishing all the dams which controlled the water? This step was necessary to get finances form UN and also all the other countries as their funding would not fall under the scrutiny of US government to identify funds for the supply of arms to the terrorists.
Planet needs to get warm so that the rest of the land which is not usable for agriculture can become usable and more rains would supply the water needed for agriculture. This plan is divine or by the planet itself but it is necessary to feed the 10 billion people who would be inhabiting this planet in 21st century. Read more of my postings on environment at

I bet Al Gore wishes he weren't such a big spokesperson for climate change right now. Stupid hypocritical windbag, serves him right.

Posted by: futbolclif | October 1, 2010 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Inaccurate low blow headline that is an affront to journalism. But it proves clearly why Mr. Gore doesn't take questions from the media. Your unprofessional bias has now been shown for all to see. And this is not some hoax dreamed up by Al Gore to make money. This is an environmental crisis corroborated by scientists and reality on a global scale that has been incrementally getting worse over the past few decades. Using bin laden (if it really is bin laden) in such a way to tie his ideology to Al Gore is simply sad on the part of the Washington Post. You are now no better than the National Enquirer.

First, bin Laden is dead! It is so hard to believe our media continues to swallow the tales issued from the Pentagon, or whoever the propaganda liars are who are keeping bin Laden "alive" for political purposes. The French Press reported him dead in 2006. Back in 2003 even a few in the mainstream media reported bin Laden was gravely ill. Other reports clearly say recent so-called bin Laden videos were faked. Another report I have is a family member attending his funeral, that he had died of kidney failure and other complications. Another is an alleged covertly taped conversation between an aide in Vice President Cheney's office and someone in a NYC district attorney's office, a portion of that conversation in which one of the participants said bin Laden died long ago and the humor they saw in how the American press and American people were being deliberately duped. That small part of the conversation was an aside to a larger discussion of a potential false flag attack. The persons talking were unknown, but the telephone locations were.

There are, it seems, more than sufficient leaked and otherwise sensitive information, and logic, available that for the mainstream media to continue playing into the disinformation about bin almost an indictment against a media that is not only complicit, but willing conspirators who spike any serious work in investigative journalism to expose the truth of known bin Laden-al Qaeda-CIA connections. Al Qaeda was largely a creation of the CIA in 1979 under President Jimmy Carter. Which, of course, means connecting all the dots from Grand Chessboard, AIPAC, PNAC and solid scientific evidence of controlled demolition of the WTC, traceable to what really happened on 9/11.

It is high treachery, and likely treason inside the bowels and highest echelons of our government, the cancerous spread of the military industrial complex President Eisenhower warned us about more than 50 years ago. One would understand the guise of fraudulent government secrecy using "national security" to sweep the truth under the rug. But it is quite another for the owners and controllers of the national media who, by default...and fear...allow themselves, and their bosses, to engage in such massively evil deception and a blackout of the truth of the hidden agendas that are destroying democracy and our Constitutional foundations.

Come on're've got to instill more fear in people more of the time...gotta get em ready for another 9/11 after all.

I wonder...what date will US/UK intelligence pick this time around to drop their next bombs? 4/11? That might work if they add a terrorist hotline.

What's next? Osama makes a video of him and his lieutenants singing "Kumbaya" under a rainbow?? I thought the title of this article was hilarious, I can see from the comments that both righties and lefties are taking it far too seriously.

It is bizarre yet strangely hilarious that the man who orchestrated the murder of almost 3,000 people in a single day now wants to make comments about relief and global warming. He wants to help the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan? How about turning himself in for the good of the people he claims to care so much about? I'm not holding my breath..

Greg Miller's headline about Osama bin Laden's Inner Al Gore is brilliantly precise in its bringing the so called words of bin Laden down to the often caricatured vision of a man telling the world to turn off their lights while traveling everywhere in personal planes and limousines to and from a home 10 times the size of most of us with an electric bill 20 times mine.
