Consumer Reports on supplement safety
A new Consumer Reports review reported here Tuesday explains that many dietary supplements may actually pose health risks. Supplements are only lightly regulated by the FDA, and Consumer Reports finds plenty of potential for their containing dangerous ingredients.
Consumer Reports identified a dozen such ingredients to watch out for, along with a handful of supplements it still might be worth taking.
Do you take dietary supplements? Just a daily multivitamin, or something beyond that? Tell us about it in the comments section -- what you take and why you take it.

The CR article came out too soon after recent studies showing that glucosamine is ineffective against arthritis.
This is a secondary problem - supplements which are safe but ineffective and so are a waste of precious health care money.
CR failed to point out that FDA oversight over supplements was deliberately weakened in 1994 after manufacturers lobbied for a relaxation of standards and Sens. Hatch (R-UT) and Harkin (D-IA) were only too willing to weaken them (many of the manufacturers are based in Utah and Harkin is a long-time promoter of quackery.

The Consumer Reports article this story is based on is highly biased. It is thoroughly refuted at:
