Diabetes numbers rise, CDC says

By Rob Stein

The number of Americans who have type 2 diabetes has risen to nearly 26 million, federal officials announced today.

In addition, about 79 million U.S. adults have "prediabetes," a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Prediabetes raises a person's risk of type 2
diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

In 2008, CDC estimated that 23.6 million Americans had diabetes and an additional 57 million adults had prediabetes.

"These distressing numbers show how important it is to prevent type 2 diabetes and to help those who have diabetes manage the disease to prevent serious complications such as kidney failure and blindness," said the CDC's Ann Albright in a statement. "We know that a structured lifestyle program that includes losing weight and increasing physical activity can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes."

About 7 million Americans do not know they have the disease.

The increase was caused by a number of factors, including:

-- More people are developing diabetes. Obesity, which has been increasing, is a leading cause of diabetes.

-- Medical advances are enabling many people to live longer with diabetes.

-- A test known as hemoglobin A1c is now being used to diagnose diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes, which is most common form of the disease, occurs when the body gradually loses the ability to control blood sugar levels. Risk factors include older age, obesity, family history and being sedentary. African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians are among those at increased risk.

Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. People with diabetes are more likely to have heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, kidney failure, blindness and require amputations. Diabetes costs $174 billion annually, according to the CDC.

There are a number of good programs out there to reverse the ravages of this disease. What many of even our own patients don't understand or have not grasped is rarely do medications for this disease cure anything; they simply control the progression of the diease. A program to lose weight, exercise and make healthy eating choices as well as being aware of portion sizes offers the best chance of reversing the effects of this disease.

While obesity is the leading cause of type 2 diabetes, remember that it is also a heriditary issue. My bone-thin 30 year old son has it because it runs in the family like a wild fire. I am fully aware of the symptoms of diabetes so I was able to get him tested and treated immediately. Our focus as a nation should also be on education of the symptoms so citizens can get prompt treatment.

There are consequences to guzzling too many soft drinks laced with High Fructose Corn Syrup. Soft drinks are more dangerous than booze and cigarettes.

Eating tons of fat at fast food joints don't help either. Children are driven everywhere and we seldom walk more than two blocks to go anywhere.

Posted by: alance | January 27, 2011 11:35 AM | Report abuse

And why is no one mentioning the 'sugar cartel/lobbyists' or the chemists who work for these fast food companies replacing nutrition with fats and sugars? Or the stress being put on Americans by their own government, causing them to over eat.
The one dual edged sword here is that many people diagnosed with diabetes will be treated with a drug that will extend their lives so they'll be able to drain the healthcare system for longer periods of time.

over 90% of type II diabetics can be cured.

not "cured" but CURED.

Simply be within 5% of your ideal body weight..... and you will NOT have type II diabetes.

Those crying about a cure.... please get off you butts.... and go for a walk.

NEVER EVER buy: potato chips, soda, candy

almost never buy: white bread, pizza, cereal

Just don't have it in your house.

1500 calories/day, MAX.

Your diabetes will be CURED in weeks to months.... I promise.

Poor diet, cheap calories, lack of exercise all contribute. Those that claim heredity should look to the past. It wasn't as nearly prevalent and most Type II can be prevented. Fat America with a shorter lifespan than their parents!

As the fat hogs and sals get fatter, they are prone to even more diseases.
Hopefully most of these sals and hogs will not be around long enough to be a real drain on American society.

One of the reasons the disease is on the increase is that the numerical thresholds used for classification of individuals as either diabetic or pre-diabetic have been lowered.

It would be useful to know what portion of the increase is the result of the lower threshold.

Our fat phobia, which has caused us to do silly things like require schools to stop making whole milk -- a less processed, lower sugar product than skim milk!!! -- and pushing skim milk, has turned into a whole lot of people eating a whole lot more sugar than they should. The 70s/80s low fat craze pushed our sugar consumption through the glass ceiling. Diabetes is a disoroder of sugar metabolism.

Who are the wits on here who claim a "cure" if a person eat's this or that?? That's nonsense.
