GW students: Our profs are liberals
A conservative students group at George Washington University researched the political leanings of the faculty and found evidence of "substantial liberal bias."
The university chapter of Young America's Foundation found that 92 percent ($221,490) of political donations by GW faculty in the 2008 primary election cycle went to Democratic candidates, while 8 percent ($20,500) went to Republicans. In the presidential election, the ratio was nearly the same, 91 percent to 9 percent.
The numbers reflect a well-documented liberal bias in the academy as a whole, the group said in a release. It cites data from the 2004 presidential election showing that faculty donations favored Democrats to Republicans by a ratio of 150 to 3 at Yale, 114 to 1 at Princeton and 406 to 13 at Harvard.
Travis Korson, president of the chapter, cited national trends toward the rejection of Western civilization, Euro-centricism and classical liberal arts in favor of "new academic disciplines such as 'Queer Studies' and 'Africana Studies' . . . I've had professors openly criticize conservatives in the classroom while denying that the academy leans strongly to the left," he said.
Korson follows the path of the late William F. Buckley, Jr., who documented liberal bias among his own professors at Yale in the 1951 book "God and Man at Yale."
Young America's Foundation, an outreach organization for the Conservative Movement, and GW houses its first university chapter in the nation.

There probably is a liberal bias among college faculty, and it's legitimate to be concerned about that bias. But you PROVE that bias by citing course descriptions, classroom practices and allocation of resources. This "conservative students group" is implying that personal political beliefs dictate teaching ability: that a Poli-Sci professor who happens to vote Democrat is incapable of fairly and accurately explaining conservative thoughts and motivations. I think political balance on campus is a worthy goal, but "balance" should be determined by something OTHER than donations and voting behavior. Using a person's personal beliefs as conclusive proof about their professional capabilities is illogical at best and unscrupulous at worst.

No one with a brain would contibute to the Pary of NO! So the conservative GWU students are fortunate their professors can think, reason, and make the right choice. This exposure may help them grow up into thinking adults.
By automatically equating Democrats with "Liberal" these Conservative students demonstrated their lack of critical thinking skills.

You may have more conservative profs. if conservatives would go into college level teaching. Instead, they choose to go into politics, business, and conservative think-tanks. Stop whining and write your favorite conservative. Ask him/her to sign-up at a university.

Hello I am sort of conservative and I'm sick of this argument. It's such baloney. First of all, it teaches potential conservatives to be suspicious all the time instead of thinking freely. Stupid.
People in academia have a right to their views. Until conservatives can produce decent academics who are entitled to tenured jobs, they are wasting their time and looking foolish.
Most conservatives don't value education, especially higher education. Their grassroots base HOMESCHOOLS and doesn't believe in basic science, so please let go of this.
I can't think of a conservative teaching colonial India these days and telling students "The English provided civility." LOL!

The conservative student group seems to have a very narrow definition of what liberal means if they equate being a registered Democrat with being a liberal. I'm a student at GW, and while I'm not surprised that 92% of faculty donations went to Democratic campaigns, I have noticed a strong trend in the GW curriculum which advances the same macroeconomic and foreign policies that most true liberals would classify as moderate at best and neoliberal, corporatist and even imperialist at worst. Furthermore, the conservative student group fails to note that 92% of voters in the District are registered Dems, and that nationwide, the overwhelming majority of college professors are Democrats and only a small percentage Republicans. This is not an issue unique to GW. Get over it.

I'm squarely in the middle politically and I agree with FiatBooks's comment. I see conservatives slowing changing from the homeschool, God and guns philosophy, to one based more on education and more inclusiveness...very slowly. Until then, the intellectuals and media will continue to be based off liberal principles, and conservatives will continue to be left behind in academia. I see absolutely nothing wrong with studies of gender, race and cultures. Those studies better equip students for our fast changing global economy.

These brain-dead dipwads would probably be more comfortable at Patrick Henry, Liberty, or Regent.

Yes. Precisely.
The GW students' understanding of the word "liberal" is worse than useless, to say nothing of their understanding of the word "bias."

Did you know the school newspaper already does this analysis and came up with the same findings TWO YEARS AGO?

And once again the word "liberal" is used as a curse by the far right. Guess what? I'm a liberal and proud of it.
Beyond the word choice of the group, their criticism are based solely on the donations of the faculty? A "strong liberal bias" would seem to need to be substantiated by more than a donation.
Also the organization is called "Young Americans Foundation," as if to say they are more American than I am because of their conservatism.

What? Liberal college professors? The devil you say! Makes perfect sense though...where else can you make a comfortable, guaranteed living spouting pseudo nonsense like "The Role of Womyn In Modern Bohemia" and "Tapestry of East African Lute Music"?
Good gig if you can get it I'd say.

It's not that big a surprise that the vast majority of Professors at GW and most all colleges are liberal. Its the perfect place for them. They can spew out their liberal anti-american, anti-capitalism garbage to a captive audience. They don't have to worry about ever getting fired for their incopentence and uselessness and they can live like leeches off people who actually work for a living. Perfect liberal job. Almost as good as working for the federal government.

so what? The uneducated come in not knowing anything. Professors who know their history know conservatism is a return to an ideal of social King serf relationship. There are no educated conservatives to hire.

Having a political preference is not illegal. These "conservative" students, were they discriminated against?
The real accusation here is that these professors at GW are educated. They are open to new ideas. They are tolerant of other ideas. They are capable of critical thinking. They understand the difference between religion and science. They read. They believe that education is the true equalizer.
These liberal profs prove how blind they are to politics in their job each day. They educate these "conservative" students. They enable them to function competently in society, industry and politics. The same students who will continually try to restrict access of others to education. The same ones who would restrict and contaminate educational content. The same students who will try to stratify America. This being just the opposite goal of higher education.

Wow.. what a shock Universities are full of liberals and if you want to get a good grade you better agree with them. I think any of us who went to college know it is a breeding ground for liberal ideology.
I remember being in college and having professors tell you flat out that if you didn't agree with them you were stupid, the GOP was evil and socialism was a great society. One professor actually sent LSD to the President of the University and told him it would expand his mind... he wasn't fired either.... Va Tech.. late 80's anyone remember that guy?

I recently saw a ranking of US colleges and GW was ranked in the 200 or 300s, but it costs over $50K a year. It was in the top 50 in expense. GW is not worth that type money.
as for liberal vs. conservative, the conservatives go for my tried and true methods of controlling the masses. Like religion and politics.

US News ranks GW 53rd, oknow1. I'm a GW student and a moderate Republican. I don't agree with the Young America's Foundation. They are a very right wing group that is much more conservative than the College Republicans.
It's well documented that the field of Academia is liberal-leaning. It's quite arrogant to say that most conservatives don't value higher education and home-school their children. You will just find them in other professions. Fortune 500 company executives tend to be more conservative-leaning. It has more to do with the profession than anything else. Corporate tax breaks and fiscal policy are more important to executives than to professors.
As for course offerings at the universities, I think those are a reflection of what the students want. Students want to know more about contemporary issues, so the universities are more adaptive to their wishes.

Those aged 18-20 are also adults and not "kids" or "teens", meaning they shouldn't be called those words. I'm a Green and liberal Democrat so the fact that at Georgetown University, professors donate much more money to Democrats than Republicans isn't to surprising. There's nothing wrong with that university offering Queer studies or Africana studies because there already is eurocentric courses.

Graduated from GW in '90 and it was full of the leftist-liberal creeps back then, like most universities. Good education, just got tired of the blame America first mentality. I can't imagine the culture now. I will steer my children somewhere else...
