The best D.C.-area colleges to work for

A report out Monday from the Chronicle of Higher Education lists 97 "Great Colleges to Work For," including a handful in the Washington region.

The Chronicle's third annual report is based on a survey of 43,000 employees at 275 campuses. It sought institutions that "do well at creating work that makes a difference, providing jobs that fit the individual, and fostering a high degree of institutional pride."

A smaller group of 39 colleges were placed on an "Honor Roll" for consistently high marks across the survey.

Colleges are generally regarded as nice places to work. But they, like most employers, have tightened their belts over the past two years, increasing workloads and cutting staff.

Each school's listing seems to include a convenient link to the classified job ads purchased by said college on the Chronicle's Web site.

Here are the local honorees:

Anne Arundel Community College. This two-year college makes the Honor Roll. It's cited for "monthly meetings between the president and various faculty," and a free massage clinic.

George Mason University. GMU makes the Honor Roll, as well. The institution is praised for a remote-work program that allows 25 workers to log in from across the country.

Georgetown University. Singled out for its location, and for the school's "many amenities, including restaurants and cafes, pharmacy and child-care centers," and even a pack-and-ship service.

Howard Community College. Earns a place on the Honor Roll. "This college uses a 'vital signs' check-up survey to determine what areas of work-life need to be improved." Workers have access to life coaches.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Cited for collaborative governance on such diverse issues as campus parking and the budget. President Freeman Hrabowski holds campus-wide celebrations to recognize job performance.

University of Virginia's College at Wise. This U-Va. branch college is cited for its free stress-management seminars, and for the $2,000-a-year allowance for employee education.

Washington and Lee University: W&L used a charitable donation to fund employee salary increases "at a time when many cash-strapped colleges were cutting benefits."

I'd say calling Wise, VA a D.C.-area town is a bit of a stretch for us beltway types. Durham, NC is less of a drive and I doubt you'd find many people labeling Duke as a D.C.-area school.

I can't say that this article was particularly helpful. May I suggest a more detailed analysis, including such factors as health insurance for part-time employees, and free tuition for the children of faculty and staff?
