Dark Knight: Joker's Top Moments...

By Michael Cavna

Robin, the Boy cast asunder. (DC Comics)

As we eagerly await "The Dark Knight's" debut tonight at midnight, we're counting down the Top Five Moments in Joker history. Here's Joker Moment No. 2...

The moment: In one of the darkest plot twists in Batman's history, the Joker has the blood of a Boy Wonder on his hands.

The full story: In the "A Death in The Family" comic-book storyline from 1988-89, the second Robin, Jason Todd, is seemingly served up to the Joker on a platter. The Joker's weapon of choice against Batman's teen sidekick? Laughing gas? Knife? No, try a crowbar, which the Joker uses to render Robin an unconscious, bloody mess. The Joker leaves Robin to die in a warehouse with a bomb set to detonate just in case the crowbar didn't do the job. Robin somehow awakens, but it's too late. The bomb goes off. Batman arrives at the scene seconds too late and suffers his greatest loss.

We'll reveal our No. 1 Joker moment in this space tomorrow. In the meantime, tell us your favorite moments in Joker's long and colorful history.

I just love Heath Ledger, and I knew he would blow peole away with his portrayal of the Joker, the man could play anyone, and better than whoever did it before...he was the most awesome actor of all time....... He will be so missed, by so many...God bless you Heath Ledger.

Ah, the great idea where DC had you call a toll number and VOTE about whether or not Robin (the second) should be killed. Lovely.

While my previous note was sarcasm, I do think the best Joker was when Denny O'Neil and Marshall Rogers brought him back as, sigh, a serial killer who was attempting to poison Gotham's water supply so all the fish from the reservoir had Joker faces...

I'd just like to say that I have no time, intention or desire to see the new Batman movie. I'm not only proud about it, I'm smug about it. Besides, given the essential ridiculousness of the concept - a crime-fighting millionaire with no superpowers in a bat suit - the TV show was the only one that got it right.
