Readers Speak: Your Top Joker Moments

By Michael Cavna

"This town needs an enema!"

So said Jack Nicholson as the Joker, and so said some readers this week when citing favorite Joker Moments. Other Jack lines also made the list of favorites: "Have you ever danced with the devil by the pale moonlight?"; "He stole my balloons"; and my personal pick, "If you gotta go, go with a smile."

From the comic books, many of you liked the Joker's "Crisis" moment when he takes care of Alex Luthor, spawn of Lex and Lois. Some also mentioned the time the Joker poisoned Gotham's water supply, making all the fish in Gotham have Joker faces.

While "The Killing Joke" made our top five because of what the Joker did to Batgirl, for many of you, the real moment involves the joke told to Batman at story's end. In it, two men are trying to jump from one building to another. One makes it across, but the other is afraid to try. The guy who has jumped says he will light his flashlight to act as a bridge for the other guy, but the other guy says he won't cross because 'what if you turn the flashlight off.'

And speaking of joking with Batman, check out Jon Stewart's interview with "Dark Knight" co-star Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel Dawes 2.0). Stewart shared thoughts on his own recent forays to fanboy-land comic shops.

Actually, the more I see of Ledger (and I'll see the whole movie tommorrow), the more I like his interpretation. The only beef I have is the makeup. I know Nolan was going for a more "real world" look to the series, but come on! The Joker without the unnatural white skin all over, only white face clown makeup? And he only has bullet scars on his face, not the clown-rictus all the fanboys have grown to love? Wipe off the makeup and he's just a scarred and insane crook. At least Nolan could've given us more of the classic look!
