The Morning Line: Hot Cartoon Characters on Parade!

By Michael Cavna

It's a debate as old as the beer commercial. The name of the game is: Which Fictional Character Is Hotter? As in: Rhett or Ashley? Ginger or Mary Ann? Or pretty much any of the characters in the current flick "Vicky Christina Barcelona"?

We are prompted to engage in this game now for two reasons:

First, because of the sudden presence of Detective Heidi Roberts, who emerges in today's "Judge Parker" in all her Pleather boldness. The cartoonists certainly give her a grand, dare-you-to-ignore-me entrance, right down to that menacing badge.

And second, because of a recent comment by reader "JkR," who posted: "Dude, Blondie is smokin hot and defies time and gravity."

That, of course, is part of the fun -- outside of "For Better or For Worse" and "Gasoline Alley," most cartoon characters get to live in a time-stands-still world, in which Wite-Out is nature's Botox. We are also mindful of the old adage that the more you get to know someone, the more attractive they might become -- which could explain our odd growing interest in Cherry Trail.

So we put the question to you: Which characters on the comics page do you find the hottest -- and why? The superhero comics abound in rippling delts and quads, natch, but we urge you to look elsewhere, too. Is Brewster Rockit a hotter "dumb blonde" than Tank McNamara? Does "Candorville's" Susan have nuthin' on Wanda McPherson? Or do you just dig the oh-so-slimming stripes on those "Pearls Before Swine" zebras?

Vicki, Rose's alter ego.

I recall Gene W beating this topic to death in his non-blog a couple of years ago but I can't find a link right now.

(and, imo, definitely Mary Ann)

And definitely Toni from Luann. And Edda and her mom in 9 Chickweed Lane. Actually, any of the women from 9CL, except the granny.

Top nominee off the top of my head: Edda Burber from "9 Chickweed Lane", the strip that subtlely attempts to make up for the lack of "Liberty Meadows" in occasional cheesecake (and for which we thank its creator, Brooke McEldowney).

Though Edda's mom Juliette in animal-print underwear isn't so bad, either.

Rex and June Morgan have had it working for some time now. That square jaw, that stalwart demeanor...and that's just June.

There are lots of hot women in the comics. But the guys? They leave something to be desired. Dilbert? Frank and Ernest? The poor shlump dad in Non Sequitir? They are either geeky, or uncombed, or bedraggled from the kids.

If I had to pick one, I would say Ozzie from Mutts. He's disheveled too, but is dedication to Earl is attractive at least.

I agree with ham. Brandy is too hot.

I agree, not much in the comics page as far as the guys go. Back in HS though I would've gone for Pierce from "Zits."

Now for online comics, it's gotta be Marshall from "Penny and Aggie."

Not a "hot" comment, but a "huh?" comment about Judge Parker.

Why, if the sleazy Cheatam was gunned down on a green in the middle of the golf course, is there crime scene tape around the clubhouse?

Wait wait, is that Catherine Willow in the foreground of the JP strip? (And I suppose Gil Grissom). Woah. My pop culture worlds have collided in a very strange way.

Also, that would mean the CSIs are inside the crime tape, so it could conceivably be surrounding a green (likely the 18th), not the clubhouse.

Come on Tiffany from Luann and Miss Buxley of course. Jane's World has some weekly T&A too hahahaha

You guys should definitely check out Aunt Fritzi in the Nancy comic strip (www.comics.com) - you may have to look around to find the ones with her in them, but she's another one for whom time and gravity has been suspended.

Axel from The Fusco Brothers is one hot wolverine, baby.

Detective Heidi Roberts FTW! Coming cat fight with Abby?!? Would that be pandering?!

Best character introduction (hotness category) since 'Jade' in Jonny Quest!

That said, Liberty Meadows walks away with that category, with take your pick of any female character....

Frazz. Cute and smart and athletic (and calvin all grown up).

I also have a "thing" for Rob in Get Fuzzy.

Been there. Done that.

Personally, I've always had kind of a crush on Calvin's Mom.

Susan (the Latina) from "Candorville" always caught my eye. Of course, the ladies from "9 Chickweed Lane" and Rose (both as herself and her alter ego) in "Rose is Rose."

Inexplicably, I'm starting to notice that Connie from Zits is kinda hot, weirdly shaped boobs and all.

I agree with the choices of Brooke McEldowney's women in 9 Chickweed Lane, in particular, Juliette. But the best is Druscilla in Brooke's 'Pibgorn' - only available online... And with 9 Chickweed, probably the best adult comic going...
