Calvin or Pogo--Who Should Be Character-in-Chief?

By Michael Cavna

With the presidential election a day away, Comic Riffs opens the polls to the
OTHER big election: Namely, the finals for the "Character-in-Chief" readers

Earlier this month, we asked readers to nominate which cartoon creations had
just the right qualities -- courage, bravery, intelligence, quick access to a
Spaceman Spiff flight suit -- to make it as the best leader for our fair
nation. Now, after weeks of polling, this contest -- like a certain real election
-- comes down to just two:

From the swamp, the
"I go Pogo" campaign
still has grassroots
support. (Walt Kelly)

Yes, my fellow Americans, it's Calvin vs. Pogo. Two legendary and beloved
(though defunct) characters, from Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes" and Walt
Kelly's titular comic. It's been a tough race, with Calvin slightly ahead in
the primary polling, but now its just these two iconic creations.

Which will it be? Today is the day to vote, so let the balloting begin.

IN OTHER NEWS: Yesterday, of course, was the final print cartoon of Berkeley Breathed's "Opus." Breathed, of course, has said the final outcome of Opus the Penguin will be revealed online. Meantime, as for his reader contest to guess Opus's fate, Breathed's Web site says: "Winners will be announced at and on or about Nov. 3." As in today. So be on the lookout...

I vote for Pogo for President and for "Little Dog Lost" as the biggest waste of space in the Sunday funnies (and that comes from someone who reads Shylock Fox!!!). LDL is a waste of sapce in the weekly funnies too, of course, but at least it's not as **big** a waste of space in its daily size. I hope President Pogo will make it his first official action to get Little Dog even further lost in the most inaccessible parts of the Okefenokee swamp, so that he can't mail out his strips to the Washington Post for another four years.
