Calvin or Pogo--Who Should Be Character-in-Chief?
With the presidential election a day away, Comic Riffs opens the polls to the
OTHER big election: Namely, the finals for the "Character-in-Chief" readers
Earlier this month, we asked readers to nominate which cartoon creations had
just the right qualities -- courage, bravery, intelligence, quick access to a
Spaceman Spiff flight suit -- to make it as the best leader for our fair
nation. Now, after weeks of polling, this contest -- like a certain real election
-- comes down to just two:
Yes, my fellow Americans, it's Calvin vs. Pogo. Two legendary and beloved
(though defunct) characters, from Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes" and Walt
Kelly's titular comic. It's been a tough race, with Calvin slightly ahead in
the primary polling, but now its just these two iconic creations.
Which will it be? Today is the day to vote, so let the balloting begin.
IN OTHER NEWS: Yesterday, of course, was the final print cartoon of Berkeley Breathed's "Opus." Breathed, of course, has said the final outcome of Opus the Penguin will be revealed online. Meantime, as for his reader contest to guess Opus's fate, Breathed's Web site says: "Winners will be announced at www.humanesociety.org and www.BerkeleyBreathed.com on or about Nov. 3." As in today. So be on the lookout...
