Cartoon Oscars: The Reubens Award Winners for 2009 Are...
THE ENVELOPE, PLEASE:
THE WINNERS FOR THE 2009'S REUBENS ARE:

'NON SEQUITUR' (WPWG)
DAVE COVERLY can continue to be grateful that his colleagues "don't read" "Speed Bump" -- because he rode their tongue-in-cheek lack-of-readership all the way to one of cartooning's biggest honors last night in Los Angeles.
Coverly won the National Cartoonists Society's top award -- the Reuben -- late Saturday, besting fellow finalists STEPHAN PASTIS ("Pearls Before Swine") and DAN PIRARO ("Bizarro"). Upon being nominated earlier this year, Coverly -- a Friend of Comic Riffs -- quipped to 'Riffs: "It's an amazing, flattering honor to be mentioned with Dan and Stephan, and further proof that my colleagues don't actually read 'Speed Bump.' "
Elsewhere, MARK TATULLI (another FOCR) won Best Comic Strip for his feature "Lio," which topped co-nominees "Pearls Before Swine" and RICHARD THOMPSON's "Cul de Sac." (All three of those strips, as well as "Speed Bump," are carried in The Post.)
The winners in NCS divisions include MARK MARTURELLO for Newspaper Illustration, MORT GERBERG for Gag Cartoons, CYRIL PEDROSA ("Three Shadows") for Comic Books, MICHAEL RAMIREZ for Editorial Cartooning, MARK PARISI ("Off the Mark") for Newspaper Panel and MIKE LESTER ("Cool Daddy Rat") for Book Illustration.
More divisional awards went to JEM SULLIVAN (Greeting Cards), SAM VIVIANO (Magazine Illustration), CRAIG McKAY (Advertising Illustration), SANDRA EQUIHUA and
JORGE GUTIERREZ of "El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera" (Television Animation); and NICOLAS MARLET of "Kung Fu Panda" (Feature Animation).
In addition, receiving awards of recognition were:
JEFF BACON, JAMES KEMSLEY, BIL KEANE, MELL LAZARUS and scholarship recipient CHRIS HOUGHTON.
Congratulations to all.

Comic Riffs is a blog devoted to the comics fan. Come in, sit down and put your feet up as we celebrate, contemplate, eviscerate and pontificate on cartoons.
Congratulations to all of them. Those are all quality strips. It's good to see talent rewarded.
