Geek Buzz: 'Wimpy Kid' Casting; Wolverine's Sharp Notes

By Michael Cavna

Random names and news crossing the transom of comics culture...

"Sarah Silverman" veteran, meet your co-star: an alum from "Saving Silverman."

As casting moves full speed ahead on the film "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," based on Jeff Kinney's novels, the project has just landed Steve Zahn to play the Wimpy Kid's dad. He joins Rachael Harris, also 41, who'll play the mom, Variety reports. After a nine-month search, Zachary Gordon will star as Greg Heffley (aka the Wimpy Kid), it was announced last month.

The Harvey-winning "Wimpy Kid" series has sold more than 20 million copies for Kinney (aka the pride of the University of Maryland). And here's when the saying actually, truly applies: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

WHERE 'WOLF'? THERE WOLF: Hugh Jackman is determined to trade in "Wolverine's" adamantium alloy claws for a songbook. Jackman has just signed on to play P.T. Barnum in "The Greatest Showman on Earth," an original musical, Variety reports. (We can only imagine what Barnum might have said to Jackman's Van Helsing: "There's a blood-sucker born every minute.")

HORNET'S NEST: "The Green Hornet," with trusty sidekick Kato, harks back to the golden days of radio -- any related Seth Rogen film projects notwithstanding. Now, VCI Entertainment is releasing the serials "The Green Hornet" (1940) and "The Green Hornet Strikes Again" (1941) on DVD, and McClatchy-Tribune News Service declares the images "quite stunning."

FAVORITE GRAPHIC NOVEL: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" wins Nickelodeon poll.

SNEAK PEEK: Marvel's new Wolverine images.

I haven't checked the print comics yet, but today's Loose Parts ( ) is GREAT and the look on Pasquale's face in panel 3 of Rose is Rose is worth the price of admission.
