The Poll: Whom Should Archie Get Busy With, Conjugally Speaking: Betty or Veronica?

By Michael Cavna

If there's one thing this Riffster learned from allll the feedback to my "Archie's Arch Rivals" piece for The Post, it's that even folks who haven't cared about the Archie comic since the word "jalopy" was still in common use -- heck, even folks who thought the strip was dead -- still, somehow, care curiously about the "Betty or Veronica?" Question.

So now that Archie the 70-Year-Old Virgin (give or take a coupla years) is proposing to Veronica the Manipulative Minx -- instead of Sweet, Lovesick Betty -- in this week's start of a Flash-Forward Futuristic Stunt-Plot, the question (like any good love triangle itself) has taken on new heat.

Now, I put the question to you, fellow Riffsters. Short of polygamy or third-party options (Midge, anyone?), Comic Riffs asks: What should Archie rightly do in this scenario?

You're invited to vote below, hard past the malt shop -- now only dimly lit, alas, by Archie's available brainpower.

Veronica will dump him once she wins. It's just a contest to her.

Betty is the clear choice, within the little world of Riverdale.

If he's allowed to choose from ANY cartoon woman, I'd suggest looking outside the Archie comics. How about Ann Coulter?

By the way, there was an Archie radio show in the early '40s. It was (and I'm being generous) horrible.

Nice Ann Coulter dig, but I'm not sure the Manipulative Manx would really be a better choice than the Manipulative Minx.

Definitely Betty:

Veronica even though she and Daddy are on the outs right now, is still a rich daddy's girl. The minute anything goes wrong she will run home to "Daddy" and he will fix things with a wave of his magic pen. Not something a newly married couple needs, and Major bad news for Archie.

As I mentioned in yesterday's posts, the lady from the Riverdale universe whom Archie should marry is neither Betty nor Veronica but Cheryl Blossom, simply because we need to see here a lot more frequently in the comics pages. Here's why:

At the risk of ticking off the censor, the obvious answer is provided by the illustration and the caption in the previous blog entry: "Veronica, Archie and Betty: They enjoy sharing a float and a sandwich." Clearly, Archie should continue angling for the ménage à trois that he has been hoping for all the time. It's time for him to buy a waterbed.

Archie should remain a bachelor. It's worked out all these years, so why mess up a good thing?

If he absolutely MUST marry, then choosing Betty makes more sense.

I said it yesterday, they all are in, what, their nineties? Why get married now?

If Archie has to marry then it should be Betty. Veronica always personified to me the meaning of the word b!&@# while Betty seemed more real. Archie should go for more jingle and less jangle in his life!
