POLITICO's Wuerker says winning Herblock Prize is 'mind-boggling'
Each year, the Herb Block Foundation bestows a prize upon an artist whose work best honors "the spirit of Herblock," the legendary Post cartoonist who the foundation says fought "abuses by the powerful."
Small wonder, then, that Politico's MATT WUERKER is more than a little humbled.
The foundation officially announced yesterday that Wuerker -- a finalist last year for the Pulitzer Prize -- is the 2010 recipient of the Herblock Prize for editorial cartooning.
Of winning the award, Wuerker tells Comic Riffs that it's "truly mind-boggling."
Wuerker -- whose works appears both in the print newspaper and online -- is "at the top of his game and enjoying it more than ever at a moment when his work matters more than ever," says John F. Harris, Politico's editor-in-chief.
"Herb Block is such a giant in the quirky inky universe of cartooning," says Wuerker, who's been with Politico since its launch three years ago by co-founders Harris and Jim VandeHei. "When I was in the sixth grade or so, it was a book of Herblock's cartoons that first flicked on a little light in my head illuminating the very unlikely career path of the political cartoonist. To get this honor in his name almost 50 years later is truly mind-boggling."
Adds Wuerker: "I also feel absurdly lucky to get singled out like this. There are so many wonderful cartoonists working today, producing great, strong cartoons who are certainly equally deserving."
The cartoonist continues: "Most of all, I feel lucky to have been pulled aboard Politico when it sail. It's been a remarkable ride. ... [The editors] unwavering support of my creative freedom here, and the generous use of cartoons and caricature on the site are all things for which I will always be
Wuerker -- who says his winning portfolio includes the cartoons in this Politico video clip (below) -- will be honored by the Herb Block Foundation on April 15 at the Library of Congress.
