Swedish 'Muhammad' artist goes into hiding after attack; arrests made [UPDATED]

By Michael Cavna

Swedish artist Lars Vilks continues to be targeted, reportedly facing a second attack this week.

The southern Sweden home of Vilks was hit by a suspected arson attack Friday night, according to the Associated Press. Vilks, who sparked a violent protest Tuesday while speaking at Stockholm's Uppsala University, was not home at the time of Friday's attack.

UPDATE: Police have arrested two men
in the fire-bomb attack, according to AFP. The suspects, 21 and 19, are Swedish nationals of Kosovar origin who were arrested after personal items were found near the scene, Swedish police said.

Since the attack, Vilks now says he is sleeping elsewhere. "During the day I don't think it is dangerous because I can keep watch over myself," Vilks told the Associated Press. "But I have to realize that I can't be there during the night."

Vilks, 53, recently was the target of an alleged murder plot that led to the arrests of two American women. He has faced death threats from Islamic extremists since depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad as a dog in a series of 2007 illustrations. That same year, a bounty was placed on Vilks's head.

The attacks on Vilks seem to highlight how much European artists who have rendered Muhammad have been targeted. Some Muslims considers depictions of Muhammad to be blasphemous.

This past Wednesday, Philadelphia Daily News political cartoonist Signe Wilkinson told Comic Riffs in response to Vilks's university attack: "I send my sympathies to the European cartoonists who have born the brunt of this inexplicable lack of humor."

Wilkinson is one of 17 Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonists who recently signed a petition to support the "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker and their right to freedom of expression without threat of violence. In recent days, two more Pulitzer cartoonists -- Pat Oliphant and Steve Breen -- have added their names to that petition. Another vocal signer of the petition is The Washington Post's Ann Telnaes.

Other cartoonists have shown their support for Vilks, too, in different ways. In an interview last month, Chicago Tribune political cartoonist Scott Stantis said he planned to draw Muhammad. His reason? "Because I have a right to."

This week, Stantis has now posted Vilks's Muhammad-as-a-dog illustration on his Chicago Tribune blog. The headline on the post is: "They can't fatwa all of us but they can go fatwa themselves."

On his blog, Stantis writes of Vilks's Muhammad image, which some have questionably deemed a political cartoon: "Stupid, offensive, badly executed? You bet. Worthy of being head butted or threatened death? No way."

Shame on the Post for publishing Swedish artist Lars Vilks photo. Now any jackass that wants to target him knows his face. What were you thinking?

Agreed, Islam is for hyporcites. Crusades you say? Too long ago to use as an example of bad religion. These acts are happening today...

Film footage of total subhuman barbarism. Anyone who believes that these muslim vermin are not out to destroy Western civilization are too stupid for human status. They clearly want to force us to submit to their descipable muslim ways and are more genocidal than nazi's on steroids. Yet we still import these muslim pigs.

It is imperative that every artist and every freedom-loving citizen draw pictures of Mohammed. They can attempt to kill Lars Vilks, they can take on one artist, or even on nation; but how many of us can they take on simultaneously? It is safety in numbers. Western Civilization will never surrender its freedom to Islam.

The neolithic Muslims have discovered that Europeans are completely spineless. The Europeans are so useless, they will not even defend themselves or their values.

I am just wondering. Why do these cartoonist want to disgrace and disrespect the greatest human being, Prophet and messanger of God to mankind, Muhammad, (peace be upon him ). On the contrary, Muslims never say or use any abusive language about Moses, Jesus, Jacob or Joseph. We, muslims, rever them.
Under the pretext of 'freedom of speech' rabid, arrogant and perverted zionists and crusaders try to incite ordinary muslims, who obviously, will never tolerate such shameful actions.
Why can't the ' champions ' of western civilization show some regard for the sensitivties of 1.5 billion muslims. Just remember, the West depends on the resources of the muslim countries for its prosperity and even survival.
In my opinion this shamless cartooning is the conspiracy hatched by the Isreali agents , and the rabid eanngicals ,who want to create animosities between the US and the muslim world.
God, have mercy on them.

(Actually if it was just one per day that would be sooo much better.)

yeah, killing in the name of islam, right?

oh wait, kind of like how america is instead killing in the name of oil and "national security" in iraq!
(which is oil too).

americans, please wake up and stop being total ignoramuses. islam is a violent religion?

yeah, right, and christianity is the most peaceful on earth!
(somebody already said the Crusades were too old, so i'll use something more recently...)
remember the Holocaust in WW2?

(wait, somebody might think that's too old and that Christians are now good people again...something more recent is needed).

remember the going to war thing on shaky evidence in iraq and massacuring so many people for a war that had no basis?
ummm, idk, supporting dictators who opress people in the islamic world and in nations in africa just for ur own private gain?

how many more examples do u want? nobody is the ultimate evil. everyone is. we need to stop grouping people and seeing things in just black and white, us vs. them. thats what idiots do (note: see Bush).

please think above and beyond that, people.

ps: to the gentleman above who mentioned we should kick out "muslim vermin," i happen to be one.

do u know what i do for a living? i'm halfway done w/ medical school. I hope one day i become a successful doctor and that i get to save ur life. u know why? b/c biggoted idiots like you only learn the hard way: you think the person who happens to come from the group of people you hate suddenly saves ur life, u have this epiphany and change for the better and u go out, hold hands w/ such a group, and then the rest of idiot america falls in love w/ the story, makes books, television shows, and movies out of it, and we call get to brag about how unified and awesome the nation is....

You missed Ann Telnaes take on this story right here in WAPO.

She reposted the Muhammad bomb in a turban cartoon, handed the other character in the cartoon his own sign and a pen to write their own cartoon. Second toon hit first toon with blank sign.

To all these “liberals” and fanatic Moslems: may I ask, who was killing those hundreds of thousands of innocent Moslem Algerians, Iraqis, Sudanese, etc... etc…? Were they Americans, Israelis, etc… ? NO, THEY WERE AND ARE MOSLEMS!!! So drawing and publicising a cartoon is a greater sin than those were committed and still being committed by other Moslems? And those misguided “radical” Moslem students that arte being “educated” in the western societies should be grateful to be able to absorb the western democracies (as imperfect as they are) instead of venting their primitive hatred towards all that are embracing non-Moslem cultures.

It's too bad this cartoonist doesn't live in the U.S. Since the police refuse to deal with these lunatics, at least in the United States, you could arm yourself to deal with the situation personally.

Funny that posts from muslim pigs like this 'furhanq' prove that these muslims are of subhuman intelligence and are incapable of reason. If this subhuman illiterate is really going into medicine, it will be a new form of mass murder.
Another strange item is the way the muslim retards refer to Americans as stupid and backwards. If so, why are they pouring into this PC excuse for a country? We are stupid for allowing these genocidal mass murdering pigs into the US. If these muslims have so much to offer, they should live in muslim countries and use their 'superior intelligence' to bring these muslim toilets out of the Dark Ages. I hope the muslims blowing up other muslims on a daily basis does not get in their way though.

Lars Vilks was wrong to draw Muhommad as a dog. He had the right to do so, and the right to not be physically attacked for doing so, but he was wrong to draw Muhommad as a dog in the first place. Now he's suffering the consequences of his own wrong actions and I don't have much pity for him.

So what do WE do? Do we repeat Vilks' wrong action, drawing insulting comics of Muhommad to prove a point? You have the right to do so, but I won't have much pity for you if you suffer the consequences.

If you think I support the violent Muslims who have attacked Vilks, you are very very wrong. They too will suffer the consequences of their actions. But I'm not speaking to them today. In in any case, they wouldn't listen to me.

Instead I appeal to my fellow Westerners to stop the escalation of insults. You are not persuading the violent and are only inflaming the moderates. You are creating more of what you hate. Restrain yourself from more insults. Do so because you can.

It's as true as it is has every been: two wrongs do not make a right.

Allah died when Muhammed showed up. Muhammed killed Allah utterly. Islam worships a dead god and a murderous child rapist for a prophet. I've read the Q'ran and I can easily see that Muhammed was a madman. Scyzophrenic dreams are not prophetic revelations.

Posted by: bainscythe | May 16, 2010 10:24 AM | Report abuse

Wrong to draw Muhammed as a dog? That's garbage. I'll draw Muhammed as a dog, a cat, a gerbil, a flower, a cheese sandwich, anything I well please I'll draw him as. I'll draw Obama as a pidgeon, a tennis racquet, a paperclip, I'll draw you as a daiper, the Liberty Bell, a glass of water, a gust of wind. I'll draw myself, too, and I'll look like Muhammed, or Jesus, or as Dr. Teeth, or I'll draw myself to look just like you, holding a Muhammed bobblehead.

I think you miss the point. The idea is that we have the right to express ourselves WITHOUT violent consequences.

Do I think that these cartoonists are exercising bad taste? Yes, I do.

Do I think that many Muslims will find the drawings offensive? Surely.

Does being offended give me the right to threaten the artist? Absolutely not.

As if we needed more proof that an irrational acceptance of pre-scientific mythologies is dangerously counter-productive.

Religion was useful as a tool to control and comfort illiterate masses. Which, I suppose, is why it's still so popular in wide swaths of backwater USA. But wherever modern standards of education prevail, the socially accepted delusion we euphemistically call religion withers and dies (exhibit A: Europe).

Posted by: kcx7 | May 16, 2010 12:25 PM | Report abuse

It never fails to amaze me how so many people do not get the idea of free speech.

Getting a thicker skin to deal with a world full of offensive ideas might be a good plan. People express themselves in all sorts of ways other people do not like and nobody needs to die because of it. Sticks and stones can break our bones, an offensive cartoon is just a picture, no matter how offensive, whether it's the Virgin Mary, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Moses, the Dalai Lama or Krishna. True dignity is the ability to ignore people who are beneath you, not to give them the power to humiliate you.

@furhanq the mouthbreather:

The Holocaust was not done in the name of religion. At all. Read a little history.

You keep dredging up stupid comebacks; it's remarkable. When you point out that Muslims don't defame Jesus or Joseph, and I reply that you're passing over Muslim crimes, you have two replies: Christians commit crimes too (gee, who exactly claimed they didn't? Oh right, nobody in this chat. Nice straw man, idiot.) and then you point out that America has engaged in wars of aggression (again, duh).

Here's your problem. You think that because other people are bad too, that Muslims get a free pass. It's an idiotic conclusion. Combine that complete lack of critical thinking with your inability to comprehend what other people write, as well as your apparent illiteracy, as per your rambling and preteenish writing, it's only possible to hope for the best: that whatever medical school you're at sends you far, far away from where I live so that I never have to deal with a doctor as brain-dead as you.

Can there be some sort of statute of limitations on comments regarding the dragging up of alleged crimes in the name of religion? The muslims keep dragging up Hitler and the Crusades (Hitler of course never emphasized anything Christian but that's another matter, they see it as the West and we're all the same).
Just keep it within your own lifetime at least. Perhaps that's too painful since there's 100 muslim acts of violence in the name of religion compared to every one by Christians or others in the last few decades.

2 people:
jm125 and charlesbakerharris.
Charles, you write lovely. no, u really do. what a shame, i'll still be some idiot doctor who makes far more money than u. at least your writing is so mature, u can write more beautifully, well-written hateful diatribes.

by hating all muslims, you show how educated and intelligent you are.
well, good for you man! i bet ur ancestors were the same ones who enslaved african people, beat them, tortured them, then wrote wonderful long diatribes about how black people are stupid for being violent and angry at white people.
the holocaust wasn't done in the name of religion? oh, really? then all those Jews (and gypsies) weren't killed in the name of religion? idk, it was all accident? a coincidence perhaps? well, i'm so glad you're here to clear that up. you're a complete idiot urself. Muslims haven't denied we have problems. I am against suicide bombings and my heart aches every single time when i hear of a stupid suicide bomber blowing himself up in my ancestral homeland of Pakistan. However, doesn't your heart ache too when your fellow superior intelligent, never-wrong christian men get angry, get their guns together, and shoot up schools and commit their own acts of terror? the purpose of my posting was not to say, "muslims are totally free to kill people! its totally fine! christians can't, though. they shouldn't, that's bad!"
if you interpreted it that way, then i'm glad i'm going to probably make more money than you and not have to worry about dumbasses such as yourself.
have fun in english class, or theater, or whatever other useless profession you do.

and at the other real moron, jm125, i wanna say this: you are what ya eat, mate!
i don't eat pork, Muhammad, Moses, and even Jesus didn't eat it. But you and your dumbass family probably it eat all the time. you're about as vile and shameless as the pigs that ya eat!

my counter question for you is if Muslims really are such sub-intelligent, subhuman people, then what would happen if, idk....america killed, banished, kicked out all of 'em?

there wouldn't be a brave warrior like Muhammad Ali to teach ya about courage, there wouldn't be many more doctors, scientists, and lawyers for you to meet, heck, there wouldn't even be dave Chappelle to make ya laugh!

well, technically, i don't need Dave chappele to make me laugh. i have retards like charles bakerharris and jm125 here instead. I wish you both weren't so stupid. The only reason i am responding is b/c the Muslim world, esp. in america, has been doing one thing very wrong: they've been sleeping. no one in my community has dared gather the courage to stand up to you ignorant morons. I am only defending myself and my people from these bitter, hurtful, hateful verbal attacks from the true vermin that will lead the US into ruin. I feel like many do people carry your views: that america is so great and mighty, not wrong and everyone else is. its a common thinking that even terrorists themselves think (note: see OBL laughing and justifying his evil attacks on 9/11).
If you noticed, the biggest tyrants in the world had one thing in common that these two idiots do: they were ignorant, grouped everybody in one category, and ended up making enemies out of people that could have been their friends.

People like you will never be happy and will always live miserable down to the very end.

good day, morons. if you'd like, I can impress you w/ more "pre-teenish" writing or i can continue being a "subintelligent" and "subhuman" medical student...actually, i think i'll do both.

America is the greatest nation on earth, and i say this w/o hesitation. I also say w/o hesitation, that you two jackasses are the worst people on earth. If more people thought like you two, the world would end as we know it. Like, if a black guy kills somebody, then all black people must be bad to you. yet, if a white guy kills a thousand people, then its ok. its ok b/c he admitted it, as Charles Baker Harris so eloquently put it.

peace out, rednecks!

@BEEPEE: "I think you miss the point. The idea is that we have the right to express ourselves WITHOUT violent consequences."

No, I got it. I got it just fine. I have another, different, point. It's this: It is an escalation of hatred in the world to make expressions that are intended to offend somebody.

We can be better people than the violent extremists, but we need to show a little self-restraint. Repaying threats with insults is not the way. It just accelerates the slide down the slippery slope to an ignorant bigoted prejudiced world.

and what about american muslim converts like Michael Wolfe? idk, throw them out too?
where? he's educated and nice, we'll take him in Pakistan.

ur such a jackass. Muslim countries can't do jack b/c first of all, america won't allow democracies to form (don't argue: u support the biggest dictatorships in the middle east just for ur oil) and u won't let them have their dignity. u continue to support the humiliation of Palestinian people (and this isn't an anti-semitic rant. but rather, why does america blindly support israel so much? like, we criticize canada more than we criticize israel).

US policy hasn't really been on the muslim side anyways so don't go about, "kick them all out!"

i was born and raised in the US. that makes me as much american as u. i'm here to stay, thank u very much.

I'd genuinely appreciate you (or any Muslim) explaining why Americans should care about the Palestinians. You complain that we tend to support Israel -- why shouldn't we? I mean, seriously, why not? For my entire life Palestinians have been blowing things up, killing people, and generally giving the West the finger. I remember seeing Palestinians celebrate during the first Gulf War when Saddam Hussein -- our enemy -- fired scud rockets at Israel. I remember seeing Palestinians celebrate on September 11th. Why exactly am I supposed to feel sorry for these people? Why exactly should I spend energy worrying about them when there are dozens of other oppressed groups on this planet who are much less responsible for their condition?

"Crusades you say? Too long ago".
The invasion of Iraq was a Crusade. Christian mercenaries (Blackwater/ Xe) were hired to defeat the non-Christians.

I'm listening for the moderate Muslims to decry the assault on freedom of speech. The core Western value is freedom of speech and thought. Killing in the name of a "peaceful" religion is not acceptable. Until the "Muslim" world accepts that, they don't have a prayer.

Posted by: thebobbob | May 16, 2010 8:31 PM | Report abuse

you have a valid point.
you say,
"For my entire life Palestinians have been blowing things up, killing people, and generally giving the West the finger."

likewise, for their lives, Palestinians have been growing up with US made F16s and tanks bombing their houses and killing their people. Anyone who argues Israel is not heavy handed is completely wrong. when there is a "palestinian terrorist" who kills an israeli, how do the israelis respond? they don't arrest him or send a group of commandos to specifically kill him and just him.

they make it much easier for themselves, at the expense of palestinians, and send F16s and helicopters to bomb him in public shops and other places, then claim "oh, well, we had to kill him but we couldn't get him alone...he intentionally kept human shields."

stupid argument. its a very congested area. people are bound to be there. they could still send a team and kill/capture the guy w/o the excess civilian loss, but that's the thing: they get a green light from washington in the name of protecting their right to live. when iran responds and arms hezbollah, they too declare their right to defend themselves. if the israelis really wanted to kill the "terrorists" while minimizing civilian loss, they could send a group of commandos to kill that specific terrorist they seek (note: see killing of Hamas leader in Dubai. Dubai is extremely crowded, yet their spies got him and didn't harm a single civilian).

when too many civilians get killed by a rocket fired from a US made helicopter in israel, israel apologizes. that's nice of them. doesn't bring their loved one back and it doesn't change their actions. why say sorry when you really haven't learned ur lesson? if i stole from my mother and she caught me, i'd say sorry. If i stole from her again and said "sorry," she'd start losing patience. If i stole again and said "sorry," my apology probably woulnd't be accepted. this is kind of the principle of what's going on there.

The bottom line that every American should learn, as well as all misguided Muslims (i.e., muslim extremists), is that there are 2 sides to every coin. I have made some israeli, pro-zionist friends in the past. though i do not agree w/ their stances on the mideast issue, i do sympathize w/ them and their cause. i personally feel that the majority of the jews should get their state, but they should get it where they originally came from (many came from germany, russia, poland, etc.)
their state should have come in Europe. the British essentially let them make their state at the expense of a people that was already there just to get their hands free.

this is where the dilemma is. if the europeans really were so pro-israel and pro-zionist, then they should let the state of israel be in Europe where these people came from. its obvious: they have blonde hair, blue eyes, and came within the last 70 years. its only fair to them and to the palestinians.

As if the film footage of these subhuman muslims attacking the old cartoonist was not enough, we have the above update, 'The suspects, 21 and 19, are Swedish nationals of Kosovar origin who were arrested after personal items were found near the scene, Swedish police said.' Kosovo Albanians again. Muslim Kosovars were arrested trying to attack Fort Dix and a couple more in North Carolina were arrested before they could carry out their jihad. These are the same muslim 'ethnic Albanians' we saved from Serb attacks about a decade go. If it were not for the US led bombing campaign against Serbia, these terrorist scum would probably have been exterminated by Serb forces. Gratitude from the religion of peace. Oh, and sorry Serb's.
