Sam Raimi to direct 'Earp: Saints for Sinners' comic for DreamWorks

By Michael Cavna

Let the Comic-Con Week "revelations" begin.

Sam Raimi -- so recently released from his "Spider-Man" directing duties (reportedly over the ol' "creative differences") -- will direct a feature-film adaptation of the still-new comic "Earp: Saints for Sinners," according to Variety.

DreamWorks reportedly bought the Radical Studios comic with the plan to have Raimi direct and have Matt Cirulnick write the script.

The comic pits "white knight" Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday against outlaws like Jesse James on a savaged and ravaged landscape. Or as Radical Publishing says, it's where "state-of-the-art motorcycles serve as modern-day horses, sky-high casinos line the streets instead of saloons, and disputes are settled by old-fashioned gunfights in the dark and twisted boomtown of Las Vegas."

The comic was created by Matt Cirulnick and David Manpearl; written by Cirulnick and M. Zachary Sherman; and illustrated by Mack Chater and Martin Montiel.

For Comic-Con, Radical Publishing has a "creators' panel" scheduled for Thursday afternoon, featuring the sure-to-be-in-demand Cirulnick himself -- as well as Jimmy Palmiotti, Rick Remender, David Hine, Nick Percival, Arvid Nelson, Keith Arem and Peter Milligan.

Sounds like Mad Max. The only problem is that WB is planning to restart the Mad Max franchise and have it in theaters by 2012. That movie will trounce all over this one.
