THIS JUST IN: Hollywood's new Spider-Man is...Andrew Garfield
Andrew Garfield has just been cast as the teen Peter Parker for the fourth Spider-Man film, which will be directed by Marc Webb beginning late this year.
On selecting the 26-year-old Garfield, Webb said in a press release: "Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."
Garfield was seen last year in Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"; his other work includes Robert Redford's "Lions for Lambs," Spike Jonze's "I'm Here" and the upcoming David Fincher film "The Social Network." In 2007, Variety named him as one of its "10 Actors to Watch."
"Spider-Man" producer Avi Arad said of the choice: "I'm incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future."
Garfield was born in L.A. but he and his family reportedly moved to England when he was 4. He has won multiple "most promising newcomer" awards from British theater groups and also received the BAFTA in 2008 for his TV work in "Boy A."
The Hollywood guessing game has been fairly furious since Columbia (a division of Sony) announced early this year that the fourth Spider-Man film would be a reboot and that Maguire and Sam Raimi would not return. Earlier this week, some sites reported that Hutcherson had landed the role.
The Columbia/Marvel film is scheduled to be released July 3, 2012, in 3-D. The three Spider-Man films have collectively grossed more than $2.5-billion in worldwide box office.
