Broadway's troubled 'SPIDER-MAN' musical to open in December

Broadway's "Spidey sense" can stop tingling. For now, at least, the seriously costly musical about Peter Parker might finally be out of danger.

The producers of "Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark" said in a news release Tuesday that the troubled show -- originally scheduled to open earlier this year -- will begin previews Nov. 14 and open Dec. 21.

The long-anticipated production -- you know, the one that will feature the music of the two U2 members most people can name -- has been scuffling about in the creative stages for several years.

During that time, the stagehand-heavy musical has racked up some hefty costs, reportedly nearing the $50-million mark -- putting it on track to be the most expensive Broadway musical ever.

With great expense comes great expectation.

According to news services, producer Michael Cohl confidently promises that the musical will offer a new spin on Spidey. Broadway's Peter Parker will be played by actor-singer Reeve Carney, 27, the frontman for the rock band aptly named, well, Carney.

Carney won a Young Artist Award in 2000 for his performance in the feature film "Snow Falling on Cedars" starring Ethan Hawke.

Marvel Studios, of course, announced this summer that Andrew Garfield will inherit the role for the fourth "Spider-Man" film, the 2012 Marc Webb reboot that will feature Peter in his teenhood.

As the Julie Taymor-directed production has been postponed, Jennifer Damiano of Broadway's "Next to Normal" has replaced Evan Rachel Wood in the role of Mary Jane. Patrick Page from "The Lion King" will play Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, taking over the role from Alan Cumming.
