The apple of our eyesore: Check out THIS Marvel cover for a real surprise

Murphy's Law, meet Newton's Flaw.

On Marvel's "S.H.I.E.L.D." book out this week, the cover (No. 3 Variant edition) is striking for at least several reasons. One reason is Dustin Weaver's beautiful artwork. Another reason is the equally eye-catching typo.

Comic Riffs is not throwing stones here, especially considering that when it comes to stones, The Post's archives are likely littered with misspellings of Oliver Stone, Joss Stone, Stone Phillips, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and even Sly and the Family Stone. Happens to the best of us, especially in a belt-tightening era when some editorial staffs across the country are forced to go with fewer line editors, copy editors or proofreaders.

Yet it's especially glaring that a cover that might hope to educate young readers -- yes, a well-intentioned mission of more, um, gravity -- reportedly misspells Sir Isaac Newton without anyone catching it prior to press.

Comic Riffs mentions only because if you've ever hoped to break into big-time comics as a proofreader, you might consider applying to Marvel right about now.

Oh, and if you do, you might also point out this Spider-Man typo of "anniversary" -- also caught by our colleagues at Bleeding Cool.
