James and the Giant Addiction: Cameron announces 'AVATAR' 2 & 3
Mission: Intervention, we are sad to announce, has failed.
James Cameron -- aka The Avatar Addict -- has now decided that his next two films will be "Avatars" 2 and 3, 20th Century Fox -- aka The Great Enabler -- has just announced.
That sound you hear is Pandora's Box swallowing Cameron whole, committing him to the land of the Na'vi and his aqua-eyed myopia through 2015.
We here at Comic Riffs are not necessarily grieving the apparent loss of Cameron's could-have-been "Cleopatra" starring Angelina Jolie. And we hold out hope that if nothing else, Cameron will try to pioneer the next technological stage in "performance capture" -- which is essentially carbon-based animation.
As we bemoaned in our recent "Avatar" rant, James and the Giant Addiction has entered the alternate realm of delusion and denial, somehow convincing himself that the public still has an insatiable appetite for all things Avatar.
(As we noted before, the latest wave of Avataria follows the August 2009 "preview footage" screenings in theaters; last December's release of "Avatar" proper; April's Earth Day release of the DVD; and August's re-release of the film in theaters. And now hitting shelves in November, the new DVD release.)
Essentially, with today's announcement, Cameron has just gone the Full Lucas. We the moviegoing public might well see "Avatar" prequels before decade's end. This is a menace that's hardly phantom.
Farewell and Godspeed, Mr. Cameron. If nothing else, we can only hope that as you feed your fixation for the next four years, you won't do what so many in-too-deep addicts do: Come to us in a few years looking for money.
Avatar is your habit, even if for only today, your decision has us a little blue.
