When 'Harry' Met Rapunzel: 'TANGLED' debut edged by Potter at box office
As lustrous as it was at the box office, the hair couldn't quite beat Harry.
Disney's Rapunzel tale, "Tangled," trailed the seventh Harry Potter film by a whisker at the top of the weekend's domestic box office -- $49.1-million to $50.3-million -- according to Sunday estimates at boxofficemojo.com. The final numbers, which could yet give "Tangled" the edge, are scheduled to be released Monday.
For the five-day Thanksgiving holiday, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 1" grossed $76.3-million and "Tangled" made $69-million. After two weeks, "Harry Potter" -- which was on about 500 more screens than "Tangled" -- has now grossed $220-million domestically and more than $600-million worldwide.
Exceeding studio expectations, "Tangled" enjoyed the second-biggest Thanksgiving five-day debut ever, trailing only another Buena Vista film: Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 2" ($80.1-million). Buena Vista now has nine of the top-11 Thanksgiving openings ever.
Another animated 3-D film -- former box-office champ "Megamind" -- was third for the three-day weekend with $12.85-million. The Christina Aguilera/Cher musical "Burlesque" debuted at fourth with $11.8-million.
