MARVEL MOVES: Axel Alonso takes the reins as editor-in-chief

By Michael Cavna

Calling all Marvel fans: Axel Alonso is your new editor-in-chief.

Marvel Worldwide announced today that Alonso has been promoted to the EiC's seat, putting him in charge of "all day-to-day aspects of Marvel's publishing division."

According to the announcement by Marvel chief creative officer Joe Quesada -- whom Alonso replaces as EiC -- Alonso's duties will include "advising on the editorial creative direction, developing new storylines and brainstorming new initiatives."

Marvel also announced that Tom Brevoort will be promoted to senior vice president of publishing.

"This new role provides me with exciting challenges and prospects I've never encountered before, but I know one thing -- Marvel's getting even bigger in 2011," said Alonso, who was promoted to vice president and executive editor last year.

For 2011, Marvel has already announced that it'll kill one member of the Fantastic Four and that it'll unfurl "Fear Itself," a series that promises to plumb modern-day concerns.

Alonso, who began as a senior editor at Marvel in 2000, will report to Dan Buckley, prez/publisher of print, animation and digital divisions.

"For over a decade, Axel's been instrumental in bringing fresh new voices to Marvel and reinventing our biggest characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Wolverine and so many more," Quesada said in the statement. "He's fought to create unique imprints like Marvel MAX while also bringing fresh new voices to the Marvel family."

Quesada, the release says, will concentrate on his new duties as chief creative officer. Quesada tweeted about the transition: "If I have to be honest, the saddest part of handing over the EIC title is no longer getting to fly on EIC 1."
