BOX OFFICE: 'GNOMEO' respectable amid Sandler vs. Bieber showdown

By Michael Cavna

"GNOMEO & JULIET":

What light through yonder box-office window breaks?

We've gotta hand it to the debut of Buena Vista's animated spin on the Bard's star-cross'd lovers, "Gnomeo & Juliet." In a weekend that box-office behemoth Adam Sandler's "Just Go With It" went to battle in the square against the teen and tween force of Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never," "Gnomeo" didn't become cinematic Tybalt.

The tale of feuding Montague and Capulet gnomes (featuring the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt) bagged a respectable $25.5-million to finish third this weekend, according to boxofficemojo.com.

Sandler's film reportedly won the weekend with a $31-million opening, edging Bieber's $30.26-million haul. That could change, though, when final figures are reported Monday.

"Gnomeo" features a slew of classic Elton John/Bernie Taupin tunes. Sir Elton himself duets with Nelly Furtado on "Crocodile Rock," and Bluebury isn't the only Lady in Verona; Elton also introduces new tune "Hello Hello," which he co-wrote and co-performs with Stefani Germanotta ... aka Lady Gaga. (A name you might hear one or 20 more times tonight, as she and Biebs will be among the Grammy Awards' big appearances.)

And our favorite Twitter reaction on the matter, btw, comes from @Safiyaxox of Canada, who wrote: "Just got home from work. Gnomeo and Juliet just came out so I was forced to wear a Gnome hat my entire shift. I don't get paid enough money."

Concerning Justin Bieber and his "girl" voice---he reminds me of Wayne Newton and his hit song in the sixties, Danke Schoen. When I first heard that record I assumed a woman was singing it!! Really surprised to find out it was crooned by a young man. I guess puberty comes later for some people; no big deal!!
