Critter Pix: Life in the Fox Hole

foxlittle.jpgWe interrupt our Radical Civility coverage to bring you John Kelly's Commons' Wild Kingdom.

Last month in my column I wrote about a family of foxes behaving oddly in the Alexandria neighborhood of Yacht Haven. How oddly? They were actually reading the newspaper. Well, perhaps "dragging" the newspaper is more accurate.

Gen. Jimmie and Judy Adams also live in Yacht Haven and are besieged by foxes:

The fox (6 babies that we have seen, along with 3 adults with them) bring the newspapers up to our house and in our back yard gardens. Yesterday I picked up 8 newspapers. Today we have 6. We have had as many as 20 in one day. We don’t understand why they have adopted this policy of stealing newspapers… is cute, but becoming annoying! My husband opened the front door to get his newspaper one morning and one of the fox was in the bushes and barked at him. I have photos if you are interested!

Am I interested? Of course! I'm a sucker for nature. Here are some of Judy's photos from Yacht Haven, which might want to consider changing its name to Fox Haven:

Have any interesting animal stories or sightings from your neighborhood? Cool photos? Send them my way.

We have coyotes prowling. The LGDs take care of them. I have seen mountain lion tracks in the mud. And then there are the young male bears looking for a new home.

The LGDs(livestock guardian dogs)keep the bears moving to new quarters, no sheep or lamb losses since the late Winter to the coyotes. And so far the mountain lion prints are just prints.

There are rumors of Eastern wolves but no confirmation yet. There was one killed when Montgomery County trapped and killed coyotes 2 years ago.

We need more wolves from out west to keep the deer, foo foo dog population, cats and toddlers population in check.
