Photo Flashback Week, Day 5
We have to wrap up the week with a cute animal photo, right? Why, here's one:
This photo ran in The Post on March 10, 1946, with this rather long caption: HE'S GOT A LOT OF PULL -- Bunker Twitchell, a 2-year-old Chesapeake Bay retriever, owned by Mrs. William Greene of 1739 Harvard st. nw., pulls the groceries home from the store in a specially made cart. His reward is one ice cream cone per trip and he looks forward to the chore. During off hours, Twitchell gives the neighborhood youngsters a free ride, just as he is doing for Portia Lee Lyon (seated, left, in cart), daughter of Col. and Mrs. Oliver Lyon, of 1754 Harvard st. nw., and Ibrahim Yazici, 2, son of the financial councilor of the Turkish Embassy, of 1743 Harvard st. Barbara Schaefer, 8, of 1737 Harvard st. leads the dog.
I don't know what's sadder, that The Post no longer runs many dogs-pulling-carts photos or that we no longer give our dogs ice cream cones.
Do you have a funny caption for this photo? Share it in the Comments section below.
I'm back from vacation next week. My column will resume in the paper--and online, of course--on Aug. 17. And every Monday I'll post a different photo from The Post's archives.
