Let us eat s'mores! Sarah Palin, Michelle Obama, and desserts

By Alexandra Petri

eatyourvegetables.jpg

"This is in honor of Michelle Obama who said the other day we should not have dessert." --Sarah Palin

America has two mommies. There's Cool Mom. "We give our kids a lot of freedom," Cool Mom says. "We're all gonna make mistakes." Then there's Mother Knows Best. "Eat your vegetables!" she is fond of saying. "Get up off the couch and move!"

Guess which one America prefers?

Well, Michelle Obama, actually. But who knows how long that will last! The dessert war is just getting started.

Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" health initiative has stirred much ire, from everyone from Glenn Beck to Sarah Palin. "Get away from my French fries, Mrs. Obama!" Beck bellowed. "First politician that comes up to me with a carrot stick, I've got a place for it. And it's not in my tummy."

Hear, hear, say I.

Like most of America, I am functionally a six year-old child, and I will eat whatever I want to eat. Michelle wants me to move and eat greens? She can take those greens and shove them! Sarah's making me s'mores!

This symbolizes so much about our country -- and about the differences between these two figures.

Michelle and Barack Obama labor under the misguided notion that explaining to the American people that things are good for us is an effective way of getting things done! That's ridiculous! You'd think they would have learned from having kids. I can see President Obama waking up Sasha and Malia by going into their room and offering logical reasons why sleeping later would serve no purpose. Then I can see the girls ignore him and go back to sleep. Somehow, the weakness of this approach hasn't penetrated.

Americans hate being told that others know best -- even people we otherwise revere, such as Michelle Obama. Ever since King George asked us to tighten our belts, we've been on the defensive. And we will defend, tooth and nail, our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of Hostess products -- at least until that tooth falls out from all the sugar.

There's a reason Garfield is the most widely syndicated comic strip. As a nation, we hate diets and Mondays and doing our jobs. We just want to lie down and sleep and decimate the local population of lasagna.

Michelle Obama's crusade to encourage healthy kids has become, for many, the symbol of everything that's wrong with the Obama administration: Its Father Knows Best tone. It's the administration of Take Your Vitamins, Swallow This Castor Oil, You'll Feel Better, Trust Us.

"Eat your vegetables!" President Obama says, metaphorically, pointing to a complicated series of graphs about health-care reform. Eat your vegetables! The New START Treaty needs to pass! Eat your vegetables! The deficit needs to be reduced, somehow! Eat your vegetables!

Then, to make things worse, Eat Your Vegetables, says Michelle Obama, literally. If Michelle Obama had a campaign to give America a later bedtime, or to encourage it to watch more television, it wouldn't have emerged as the defining metaphor of the Obama presidency so far. But those green vegetables Michelle has planted near the White House? She might as well be planting them in the shape of an easy target. This analogy is being served to us on a silver platter with a glass of water and some parsley as a garnish. "Want to go jogging now?" Michelle and Barack ask us, not noticing that anything is wrong.

At some point, promoting vegetables slipped into outright war on dessert. People were only moderately afraid of death panels. But when Cookie Monster announced that "cookies are a sometimes food," we erupted into the streets in outright rebellion. Take away our dessert, and we become violent and angry, probably from sugar deprivation. "Get off my lawn!" we shout. "Don't touch my junk! Leave Britney alone! Let us eat cake!"

Why behead Marie Antoinette? Those French peasants don't know how good they had it. Sure, "Let them eat cake" seemed insensitive at the time, but the alternative - "Don't let them eat cake!" is infinitely worse.

Let us eat cake! This is our new rallying cry. It's no longer a vague subjunctive. It's a singular demand, aimed at one person: Michelle Obama.

If you don't, Sarah Palin will.

Sarah Palin is unAmerican for mocking Mrs Michelle Obama !

Mrs Obama has better taste, style, standard and class than that Wasilly Hillbilly. Mrs Obama had brought the Iron Chefs to her reality show to show-off the lifestyle of the Rich and Famous, introducing ordinary Americans to lavish dining and fine wining, scenes that ordinary Americans can only smell and lick in their dreams. All Americans are forever thankful to Mrs Obama for allowing them to peek into their widely-envied, deeply-salivating but highly-inaccessible lifestyle so that the tiny little people can at least have a virtual experience of those Rich and Famous in Mrs Obama's very extravagant reality show.

Compared to the ever-polished, highly-cultured, vastly prodigal Mrs Obama, that Wasilly Hillbilly is only capable of bringing very ordinary Americans like Bones and Muds to her very ordinary show demonstrating the lifestyle of very ordinary Americans. Who care and who bother about the sickening pathetic miserable life of those little people ? We crave to enjoy, share and appreciate all the exotic vacations visited by the Obamas; the exquisite golf courses patronised by the Obamas; the top-notched glittering designer clothes graced by the Obamas; all the AAA+ celebrities who are fortunate and blessed to be seen with the Obamas. Mrs Obama would never allow the Gosselins, Bones, Muds, Peggyes, Musher and all those stinking rotten trashy people to ever step into the White House and join her reality show. Only AAA+ celebrities and people of high social status are entitled to enter the White House and star in Mrs Obama's reality show. The little people can queue up behind the White House back door to collect those unwanted bones and leftover trash which they would only be too honored and grateful to treasure and cherish as priceless souvenirs and rare relics for the rest of their wretched pitiful life. Fat and ugly people who don’t follow the great Teachings of Mrs Obama don’t need to come.

Those low-class little people should join the Wasilly Hillbilly, not the Obamas' high-class and high social status reality show which only the True American can truly enjoy !

In fact, under new health care reform your health insurance company will no longer be allowed to cancel your policy if you get sick, we should be doing this already! search online "Wise Health Insurance" it is a good place to find insurance if you have illness like me.

Again, Palin shows why she is a reality tv star and not a leader. She completely distorts Michelle Obama's efforts because Mrs. Obama is NOT trying to force parents to feed kids veggies and fruits but encourage parents to be better parents. The nation has a childhood obesity epidemic; 1/3 of children are obese, leading to long term health complications. Those complications often end up placing strains on both the private and public healthcare systems as private insurers and providers have to often raise their prices and insurers their premiums and in the case of public systems e.g. county or city hospitals, often called general or university hospitals, have to seek increased funds through bonds or property tax hikes. And, Palin's beloved military said childhood obesity will be a long term problem in terms of recruitment.

My questions are: Did her supporters forget that both Barbara Bush and Laura Bush campaigned for increased literacy? Was that "government intrusion?" In the early 1990s, President George H.W. Bush had Arnold on his President's Council on Physical Fitness and even then Arnold said kids needed to get outside and exercise? Was Arnold being a pompous elitist telling people what to do? In the 1960s, JFK stressed physical fitness. If Mrs. Obama commissioned Sly or Arnold to help with her campaign, would Palin yap her trap then? Obesity is not a GOP vs DNC issue.

I also am curious about what constitutes government intrusion. Let's see: Don't police pollution, fraud, discrimination, faulty products and what our children are eating in cafeterias Joe and Jane Public PAY for yet restrict women's reproductive rights, restrict who can marry whom and put someone in the hoosegow for smoking a joint in his/her own home or paying for pleasure with a consenting adult. Ok.

Sarah Palin and her whole tawdry and trashy family are simply low class, low brow versions of the Kardashians and Hiltons.

And that's how the s'more crumbles.

SARAH the athlete--Michelle would be funny in Alaska==one chubby 200 lb unsexy woman--i shutter to think what she really looks like

Posted by: bulldogss | December 21, 2010 3:49 AM | Report abuse

My question is this...Is this about sweets or is this an issue about freedom?

I simply disagree with the government taking control of what we eat. If Ms Obama wants to eat greens and such, good for her. If Ms Palin wants to eat smores on a camping trip and tell stories, well good for her too! The Government was never designed to dictate our diets.

Do any of us realize that the more power we surrender to any government, the fewer rights we will have? It may seem like this has only to do with fat cells. But, it has more to do with our freedom that will be taken piece by piece until nothing is left for you or me.

Sure, there may be some that are over weight, but this is so much deeper than french fries and cup cakes. So, we can use our wisdom and our freedom of choice and pick what we will.

But, what's next? Shall our government tell us what clothing to wear because some folks can't afford certain clothes and that isn't fair? Or, what type of vacations we can have, because you are spending too much money? The government has already kicked God out. If they can remove Jesus and God, then you and I are next!

As for me, I believe in the government of our founding Fathers. I do NOT believe in the government that is being pushed down our thoats! It is "We the people..." NOT, "We the government."

Remember obamacare? It was passed, not because it was right, but because it was a political power game. 2400 pages and they passed it while most NEVER read it.

Mr Obama said he had to pass the "Cup Cake" bill or he would be sleeping on the couch. I thought he was President and not Ms Obama?

Now its Cookies, Cakes, and then what's next?

I encourage each of you to pray for our nation to continue being a Godly Nation as we were founded. We are a FREE Nation and a Godly Nation. NOT a government nation.

Thank You and God Bless!

Chic, charming, cheerful Gov. Sarah Palin tosses a few comedic darts here & there, but there is no malice in her light-hearted humor.

tmbodok...I bet you didn't have a single problem when it was Saturday Nite Live mocking Bush or Palin.
I think your problem is jealousy! Your jealous that Left Wing Liberal Democrats don't look any where near as beautiful as Palin, heck niether do their wives.
Hard to believe anyone that good looking could ever utter a complete sentence isn't it? She's good with a shotgun,a dogsled,a four wheeler, and she's not a blond and she's not a Democrat, admit it she's good
Jealousy will ruin you my friend.

I'd like to congratulate Bulldogss on his comments about the physical shape of Michelle Obama as it shows the (lack of) intelligence of most of Sarah Palin's followers. Tremendous argument and very intelligent comment. And to bubbasouth, if you are a bubba and are from the south I understand why you can't understand the subtleties of Sarah Palin's hits on the Obamas. And to buildtheark, do you really believe in our nation being a godly nation when a number of our Founding Fathers were almost atheists? Get a grip. Show some intelligence. Have a great day.

Considering that one of Sarah Palin's children was underage when she became pregnant, I don't think Sarah is in any position to lecture Michelle Obama on her parenting skills.

I can't tell if the author is being ironic or serious. If serious, then I don't appreciate your imposition of your vision of all Americans as emotionally stunted in a state of 6-year-old children who throw tantrums when presented with logical arguments. Yes, Beck and Palin throw tantrums and pound the fists and kick their heels, and sadly, a good "chunk" of our electorate cheers them on and says "good for you" and "right on." But Michele Obama's gig is that she encourages us to reach higher and demand more from ourselves, while Beck/Palin shout righteous indignation at others who don't sink to their level.

Hello down there.

Are there any adults left? Who's driving the bus? ore should I say - RV?

We can see the US from our houses - and we are really worried.

We have concerns about your political system being completely corrupted by money - maybe we should look at it a bit differently and start looking at it as 'regressing' - in a form of dementia that shows it going back to early childhood.

I never heard Michelle Obama tell anyone not to have dessert. What she said was it's not a right. Do these same people have problem with the food pyramid too that has been in place for decades? The 1/2 term governor before she quit that job is so petty it's not even funny anymore.

Glenn Beck reminds me of that pi$$y little type who walks around with a chip on his shoulder and bellows bravely about what he would do "If". The carrot comment was typical of such swaggering little poodles who love to bark but don't have the cajones to bite.

Look. Like Beck, Bachmann is an air filled celeb who would flatulate out of existence once their bubble is burst. Her support--like Beck's--is narrow and all on the surface, sort of like the skim one sees on a stagnant pond. Take one scoop of that skim and one can readily see that it only exists on the surface where it can be seen and smelled.

(sigh)....I like the analogy of the cool mom vs the strict mom, but in both cases what it says is the ultimate truth - the American people are basically children....fat spoiled children. We want everything immediately with no sacrifice and with no concept of the costs involved. We want tax cuts with no spending cuts. We want to be able to eat like 12 year olds, not exercise, and still lose weight.

And this idea that it is somehow a virtue to eat junk instead carrots...what are you 8 years old? Grow up America. It be easier to feel that way if we didn't have an obesity/diabetes problem that is one of the causes of the drains on our health care system.

Posted by: jetrain | December 21, 2010 9:39 AM | Report abuse

Only those with 'a few bricks short of a load', as my Dad used to say, would have a problem with any comments suggesting that children should eat healthy foods and get exercise.

We have an obesity problem with both children and adults that will eventually cost big money to fix and then these same people will complain that the mean old government is expecting people to pay taxes to fix this problem.

It's been my observation that intelligent people listen to what has been said, rather than than pay attention to who is saying it....

This probably symbolizes the Republican party's complete separation from reason. The Army releases a report saying 25% of new recruits are too overweight to be admitted, the NFL starts it's Play 360 program to get kids moving more, health care costs soar because of the myriad of complications that come with obesity but when the White House lends its name to a program to make us healthier...the Republicans turn it into an Us Against Them.

Would them same Lame-O's (to borrow a juvenile word from a favorite GOP grown-up) also criticize my kids doctor for giving the same instruction?

I assume these pinheads (to borrow a juvenile word from another of the GOP favorite grown-ups) would have HATED Ronald Reagan for getting Arnold Schwarzenegger to push kids to excercise more...how DARE he tell us what to do with our kdis?!

My kids would love to have chocolate cake for breakfast. It's up to me to make sure they don't. But I'm not offended by anyone correctly pointing out the factual benefits of eating better?

My goodness, put some real thought into what you're doing, Republicans. This current trend of "What are the Obamas for...put me down for the opposite" doesn't demonstrate any ability to actually think.

You Alexandra Petri are fanning non-existent flames. The woman, Palin, is obsessed with the Obamas and she'll do or say anything to put a dent in their persona. And you are helping by showing up the Obama approach as logical and therefore flawed, and Palin's as irascible, but effective.

Mrs Obama never said not to eat x, she has simply advocated for healthier eating and if you saw what's on the menu on school lunches, you'd not be pitching this she said she said lopsided argument.

This column is a great prank. It pokes fun at both Palin and Michelle Obama. Palin comes off as more stupid, because Obama is reacting to a real big and costly problem in American life, obesity. Palin is just an airhead who seems to deny that there is a problem.
It is interesting to see how the ideology of the different posters affects their reaction to the different aspects of this question.
As a volunteer in a school in a poor area, I see how many children are affected by obesity, along with their parents.

Oh yeah, Sarah's a big parenting success:

-Bristol, well on her way to her eventual weight of 200+ lbs & a single teen mom to boot. And now she's touting abstinence! But according to Sarah, she's a role model, not a tubby, double-chinned hypocrite. Well done, Palin.

-Piper, also well on her way to childhood obesity. Spoiled, entitled brat, who's ignored by mom unless the TV cams are present. And sometimes even then.

-A son who was given a choice by a judge: the army or jail, according to his cronies.

-An infant son who is destined to be raised by nannies, only to be trotted out when the TV cams are present. Or for political events to prove what a great mom Palin is.

Yeah, Palin sure is cool. What a role model.

The teaser headline... "Palin blasts Michelle" I think overstates the actual one-line statement "This is in honor of Michelle Obama who said the other day we should not have dessert."

It was said on Palin's Alaska reality show.

Of course.. the Left will react with characteristic outrage and posters will have a chance to hurl fresh vitriol at the most hated, most dangerous, dare I say most powerful ? woman in America.

Pathetic journalism.

The First Lady's efforts to encourage American families to feed their children the healthy food they deserve should be applauded. In one breath, we beg our leaders to do more for our children and our collective health. In the next, we condemn them for being preachy or take cheap shots at their appearance. I might add that Laura Bush's efforts to advance American education were not classified as "Mother Knows Best". They were met with open arms. Mrs. Obama is an inspiration to a lot of Americans and genuinely cares about this issue. This is about education and health, not limitation of freedom.

Considering almost 1/3 of U.S. children are obese or severely overweight and an equal number of adults are as well, YES AMERICAN PARENTS DON'T KNOW HOW TO FEED THEIR CHILDREN PROPERLY. So kudos to Mrs. Obama for helping to instill better eating habits.

Mrs. Obama's popularity has, per the polls, plummeted along with her husband's. She did not bother to read the labels on the Lunchables she was feeding her children; she went on national media to talk about the youngest one's weight; and now, just because she didn't bother to do her own nutrition homework, she wants the whole country to stop, re-vamp everything to take away choices, rather than parent. What is troubling is her focus on HER issues. As a first lady she could have done so much--ending hunger in American, for instance. Why didn't she do that? Because that didn't affect her, didn't have the right photo ops of her pretending to garden. It's do as we say, not as we do. Obama still smokes. She goes on insensitive vacations, wears ghastly outfits and generally acts like she just won the lottery. So they both give the opposition endless ammo. They belong in a tiny community where they can organize everything for everybody. Overall, they were given a free pass for about 18 months and anyone who criticized them heard the r-word. Free pass is over; neither one is to be taken seriously.

The problem with Ms. Petri's commentary--even if somewhat tongue in cheek--is that it wholly accepts the premise upon which Palin's "dis" of Mrs. Obama is based, namely, that Mrs. Obama's initiative tries to limit the freedom of Americans. That is blatantly false. Trying to get schools to offer more healthy options for kids and encouraging kids to exercise more should not be that controversial. But, as her comments about "death panels" proved, if Palin can score a few political points through an outright distortion, she will do so.

Posted by: Buxton1 | December 21, 2010 10:03 AM | Report abuse

I love it when Palin talks about child-raising. Let's see ... She's already 0 for 2 when it comes to getting her litter through high school; the oldest was sent to war - reportedly because of drug use, the younger, as we all know, was denied basic knowledge of pregnancy prevention, then denied abortion services and now is a (fat) high school drop out with a kid to raise.

Palin herself, in an inexcusable display of irresponsibility for a person who does not believe in birth control, allowed herself to become pregnant at the age of 46 and as a result is raising a horribly damaged child whose short life will be one of constant, painful medical intervention. He will be a high school non-graduate too, if he lives that long. So much for Sarah, the Mother.

W/r/t Michelle's efforts to improve the quality of the crap kids eat today, all I can say is that obesity and the resulting medical complications, are costing every single American money and lots of it. Fat kids grow up to be very sick adults who face a lifetime of expensive treatment which we all pay for. Sarah may love her little butterballs, but to the rest of us, they represent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars disappearing like the french fries into the bottomless tummies of people whose parent never taught them how to eat.

And another thing - Alaska is right up there with Mississippi and all the other southern, Republican states when it comes to an obese, sickly population. Maybe Sarah should get her head out of her tweeter and look around her own state.

Posted by: Casey1 | December 21, 2010 10:03 AM | Report abuse

Let's see, Sarah Palin has a daughter with a High School Degree, who was pregnant at 17 out of wedlock and apparently has no concern about the nutrition of her children feeling that obesity is not a problem in America even though it can lead to diabetes and other health problems down the road. She exploits her children to her political benefit and she has the audacity to criticize Michelle Obama? I do not think so.

Palin's total disregard for her influence on Mothers across America who look up to her, which already says a lot about their IQ, is appalling.

This just goes to show the lack of character and moral grounding Sarah Palin has.

NewsFlash, virtually every presidential wife had focussed on children's issues and if Laura bush, whom I have a lot of respect for, said the same thing, would you then find it wise? Michelle Obama's staff isn't any larger than any other in the same spot, except perhaps security detail from crazies. Start doing something on your own? like get an ivy league law degree and work for the public good in government..hmm, oy yes, DID THAT. Every presidential wife has had a platform and considering the epidemic of obesity in the US, rise of heart disease, child obesity, these are real issues. They are advocating healthy eating, not cramming down your throat.

M. Obama is not TELLING us NOT to eat sweets, she's just drawing attention toward healthy eating - same as everyone is doing/has done with smoking over the past twenty years (the NERVE of some people to FORCE me to smoke outdoors).

This is the first pro-Palin article I've seen about this. You're also speaking against recommendations of doctors (only one mention of diabetes so far by a poster), against the military (too many applicants are too fat to qualify), and millions of parents who are trying to wean their fat kids off Twinkies and cupcakes.

It's still an individual choice. This is not much different than "hero" Ronald Reagan's campaign to get off the couch and exercise. NO JACK-BOOTED THUGS WILL BE TAKING AWAY YOUR HO-HO'S!!!

Look. A little personal experience here. I have a brother. His name is Mick. I love him but he thinks and reacts in the same way Palin does. I worry about him because I do love him. But, all of his life he has had this same chip-on-the-shoulder attitude toward government and authority in general that Palin seems to demonstrate. He has this same anti-elitist atitude--except for the elitist CEOs at the tobacco companies who are partly responsible (along with Mick himself) for the sad turn of events his life has taken on. He is so sick because his lungs are rotted owing to his tobacco addiction.

Food can be just as much an addiction. I am not immune but I will wager that because I have learned to discipline myself to avoid certain types of food, exercise daily, refrain from smoking and drink only moderate amounts of alcohol. My brother is over a decade younger than me and he is almost gone. He is my baby brother. But, he is where he is because of that chip-on-the-shoulder attitude that prevents so many of his ilk from listening to any rational discussion on such issues. He looks for excuses. Like Palin, anytime anyone suggests that may he should change his personal behavior he gets defensive, reacts in a reflexive, idiotic way that may give him short term satisfaction but in the long run does nothing to help him out of his predicament.

I am certain that if Palin's daughter or husband were to suddenly contract cancer or some other illness owing to bad habits or addictions, she too would make excuses and resist any notion that changing one's lifestyle can make one a healthier, happier person.

Oh, and it doesn't have thing one with taking away some total miconstruction of what the word "liberty" means. Liberty is nothing more than a chimera if one wallows in complete ignorance. Palin depends on widespread ignorance for her own success.

If you want to know why Sarah Palin won't go away, ask the liberal journalists at this newspaper who write about her daily and the 500 witty and tolerant comments we all then proceed to post about her such as "Sarah's stupid" and "Sarah's a hillbilly!"

The fact that she is not even an elected official and occupies so much space in our minds and on the political pages of this newspaper means in the end unfortunately, she wins.

Let's see.. Bristol is a teenage mother who opted to "dance" instead of "college" and leaving the baby to be tended to by others and her mother thinks she is a role model. Does Piper even go to school? Willow lashing out on facebook and that poor baby just seemed to get passed around during the election like a loaf of bread. If there is a choice I am going to take Michelle over Sarah for to many reasons to cite. I thought suggesting kids eat properly and exercise was a good thing, maybe not!

Posted by: sbeck1 | December 21, 2010 10:19 AM | Report abuse

I think Plain realizes that her star is fading. America has woken up to realize she is, well, a moron (to be generous).

She is now lashing out at the dumbest things. While the rest of America discusses N. Korea, START, DADT, Palin has chosen to support our children right to be amongst the fattest, most unhealthy in the world. Well, at least 30 years from know her followers children will be dying off while those who listened to Obama will be healthy. In a way I hope they do repeal Obamacare, it would be unfair for us to pay for all the children of these low IQ parents who created their own health problems. And if Palins children are any indication they will also be single parent drop-outs living on their parents because they are uneducated, fat and unhealthy.

Wow - the Palinian Parrots sure jumped on this bandwagon.

We'll all be paying for obesity related health care costs in the future - same as we're all paying for heart disease, cancer, and AIDs in health insurance premiums, taxes, and high doctor/hospital visits as high costs are passed to everyone.

This article should also encourage fat people to buy their own health insurance (no offense to heavy people, but most obesity is preventable - and preventing it saves food money!).

I guess the main source of my animus toward Palin is that she is such a coward. Like here heroes, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, she makes such snarky comments not from a direct confrontation with those she condemns, or even with a spokesman or a journalist or anyone else who might offer up an adequate challenge to her assertions, but from the comforting, safe confines of her own silly little entertainment program. Both Limbaugh and Beck never stray too far from the safe, farty confines of their smelly little broadcast booths and neither does Palin. All three of them spend vast amounts of their fortunes to set up elaborate security precautions--not to prtect them from some imagined, lurking, sinister assassin--but rather from anyone, anywhere in any venue that might rip away the phony veneer that hides their true selves from the public--their ignorant, bigoted, puerile selves.

Poor Michelle, now she´s targeted by Sarah´s latest fun and games with the truth. As I understand it, Mrs. Obama never said ''no dessert " She just limits her own children´s intake. There is a problem with obesity in the US that is directly affecting the health and well being overall. I don´t want the government telling me what to eat but it´s ironic that Palin and her ilk exaggerate the calls for better nutrition and at the same time are vehemently opposed to health care. As it is, I think Mrs. Palin has a real and personal hangup about the Obamas that goes fare beyond political differences.

Palin has nothing to worry about. The vitamins we need to take every day on the advice of Michelle Obama, will soon be illegal in her husband's Food Safety Modernization Act which gives the FDA the power to take them away from us. Michelle's organic garden will also become illegal from the same bill, with the FDA having the power to threaten organic farmers with 10 year jail terms and 250,000 dollar fines for growing food that the FDA assumes is unsafe. Michelle's campaign to fight childhood obesity will fail because the FDA has allowed the artificial sweetner Aspartame in over 6,000 foods and berverages including all chewing gums and 'diet' soda. If you have not read the reseach, Aspartame use, causes on average, weight gain of 50 pounds a year year after year. Just go and observe those kids that chew gum. Mrs. Palin indeed has nothing to worry about. We, the American's that want healthy foods, do.

Perhaps that's why plenty of Americans are disgusted with the right wing.

It's amazing that so many people are willing to take sides with Caribou Barbie. There are so many things that she just doesn't get. She doesn't understand that obesity is, in fact, a serious public health problem and the people least likely to have health insurance or even regular health care are also least likely to eat healthy diets. What happens next? These same people require health care, which they will get in emergency rooms and hospitals where they cannot be turned away because of inability to pay. That means that everyone who has health insurance pays higher premiums.

What Michelle Obama knows about nutrition would fit in a thimble. With her body and her poor nutritional habits she should be the last person taking on a role model position for nutrition. If you catch photographs she usually has something greasy or high fat in her hand eating. The woman is a one stop eating machine. Last photo shown on WaPo was a basketball game outing with the family and what is she chewing her way through? A big bag of greasy popcorn yes indeed a great role model for American children. Get the woman out of any nutritional role model until she can fit her ample girth through the door of a gym.

While I am never a Sarah Palin fan at least she is at a normal body weight and is pictured frequently enjoying athletic outings that serve as good role models for children. In this area Sarah Palin wins hands down.

It seems that Palin is unaware or simply doesn't care that childhood obesity has become one of the major concerns for health care providers nationwide. Perhaps she doesn't care that obesity in children leads to obesity in adults and that obesity can cause heart disease, cancer and an indolent and debilitated life style. I do care, since as a rehabilitation therapist I'am on the receiving end of the obesity pandemic and must deal with the effects of obesity in our hospitaized patients every day.

Perhaps Sara Palin and Glenn Beck would like to join me in our hospital here in eastern Oregon and try and lift and turn obese patients or help them get to the bathroom for a few days. They may appreciate how many nurses and therapists feel about the toll that obesity takes, not only on the individual patient but also on health providers as well as the obese patient's families when the patient returns home and the family must serve as their primary care givers.

It amuses me to no end how Sarah lives rent free in the regressive (aka liberal progressive) mind. How is MO cool? Oh, that's right, she supports the dem motto: do as I say, not as I do; to wit: If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn't buy one.
If a regressive (aka progressive liberal) doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a regressive is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat his enemy.
A regressive wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a regressive is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a black man or Hispanic are conservative, they see themselves as independently successful.
Their regressive counterparts see themselves as victims in need of government protection.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A regressive wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels.
regressives demand that those they don’t like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.
A regressive non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it’s Islam, of course!)

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A regressive demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is embarrassed.
If a regressive slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he's in labor and then sues.

The real difference is Michele Obama tells everyone what to do and DOES THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE. I can't count how many times I have seen that family gouging down on ice cream, hamburgers, hotdogs, french fries, and more. It is sickening. Sarah Palin's life is more close to how most "real" Americans live. Not fake, socialist, and elitist like the Obamas. Once America realized who Obama really they turned on him and his communistic polices and voted out the Socialists (Democrats), same thing will happen in 2012!

The Republicans sound so stupid it's beyond words, but then again, considering that Mississippi has the nation's highest rate of obesity, and as we all know Mississippi is both a Republican State as well as a Welfare State, it comes as no surprise that Republicans also turn out to be the most ignorant.

So far as I'm concerned, Republicans can clog their arteries to their heart's delight, and drink all the toxic water they can swallow.

With this kind of a stupid attitude, they really don't deserve any better than to be a victim of their own vices.

This story is beyond pathetic! We have a two bit trailer trash Mom (Palin) advocating against children being asked to eat healthy. Theres a reason why Americans kids are obese, diabetic, and lazy. Its people like her that allow kids to do what they want (look at hers). She and the rest of her cronies are looking more and more like racists everyday. Why be against eating healty? Thats nothing to be political about. Every good Mom around the world have asked or MADE their children to eat healthy. Does she not want a Black Woman giving advice about living a healthy lifestyle? Probably why her girl got knocked up and the other is out prostituting herself now! Maybe she should have told her daughter to use a condom, but her kind dont want to give or want healthy advice for kids. And Glenn Beck is clown who's not even worth mentioning.

This is another step of the republican party dumbing America down. See if the republicans can dumb America down, they win with fear and stupidity. See people, every first lady will choose a social issue and try to bring it to people attention. It could be about illiteracy, it could be drug abuse or healthy eating. See education is key to success and to our countries future. Yes, radical republicans want people to remain illiterate, uneducated, fat and lazy and under the thumbs of the powerful. See moderate republicans and democrats understand that we have many social issues that have become problematic to our well being as a nation. See, 1 in 7 people cant read, 32 million U.S. adults lack basic prose literacy skill. So when the first lady Bush worked on this social issue did it become tied up in radical republicans web of deception? No of course not because it was a republican doing it.Now if a democrat did the same thing, they would be saying government is forcing people to be educated enough to read. Seer radical republicans, Palin, Beck, Rush and the rest are willing to destroy America for their own gains. That's why moderates from either side are the true patriots and the radicals are the true danger to our nation. If you believe that by Michelle Obama talking about healthy eating habits is a government take over of what we eat and our children eat, than you are a radical and a danger to our nation. If Michelle and the president was trying to force all supermarkets only to sell healthy foods and make farmers only produce healthy foods than that would be radical. However they are not, so if are a palin/beck/rush follower, you have serious problems because you will believe this deception from them that goverment is taking over how we eat. The sad part is, there are those who do believe it.

Michelle Obama may be spreading the word about healthy living through her Let's Move! initiative, but Thanksgiving is Thanksgiving.

In an interview with ABC's Barbara Walters set to air on Friday, the first lady says, "Don't worry about how much you eat. Just enjoy it."

"This is the time," she said, "have pie." "

Third, if you think the government is not in charge of what you eat now, you're kidding yourself: The farm subsidies make the corn and soybeans and high fructose syrup and hydrogenated fats way cheaper than fruits and vegetables, and our food supply is full of the junk and some people can only afford the bad stuff. Sarah Palin will say just about anything to get a reaction. The problem here is that an important point is being obscured. Empty calories are both cheap and fattening; over consumption of empty calories can result in obesity if the empty calories are a substitute for nutritionally dense calories. I do not see why advocating for a greater proportion of the calories in a child's diet being of the nutritionally dense variety is a problem. Unless, of course, one has a vested interest in maintaining the profitability of the manufacturers of these non-perishable, readily available, inexpensive empty calories. Schoolchildren merely eat school lunches; they don't contribute to political campaigns.

Right - Michelle only said "desserts are not a right" - would mostly be said by a parent addressing an overweight kid, but it could also be said to a non-obese child who just acquired Type 2 diabetes and wonders why he/she can no longer eat sweets.

The Post just allows opinions to be published. The one is parroting Palin because she wants to, forgetting all the health concerns (earlier I forgot to say Palin/this could also offend dentists).

Intelligent, mature people usually deal with the truth - if not, they'll at least preface a story with some facts and say the rest is their opinion (and how their opinion on this doesn't apply to obese kids or those with diabetes).

I'd be willing to bet that the people complaining the most are the ones who care the least what they feed their kids as long as it's easy.

As others have pointed out, this is no different from educating about and encouraging physical exercise or literacy. There are no food police with guns to the heads of the parents who want to feed their kids twinkies. The main difference is the the political party of who is doing it.

They are now dead or in jail where i have a great career. But what gets me are the outright lies carried on by the Palinites. The first lady is out of shape? Funny didnt hear that during Bush 41 terms? Its amazing that when Laura Bush started her literacy campaign nobody from the right or left said anything about the government mandating what they could or could not read. We have become such a divided country especially the GOP that anything the Dems and specifically try to do to help the country is looked at as government intrusion. Yet they forget that the last admin was more intrusive that any in the past with the exception of Nixon. To recap the Bush admin:

Held American citizens in jail without the right to council, which by the way for you all you self proclaimed constitutional lovers is AGAINST the constitution. Oh and on top of that tortured them, again another violation of the constitution.

They used the phone companies to spy on American and their political foes.

Wiretapped a sitting member of congress, Rep. Jane Harman.

Outed an undercover CIA agent for political gain.

So when Obama does any of these things listed then i agree that the government is reaching into my life. But considering you gave the last admin a past please take this advice: SHUT UP............

America is a nation of fat, unhealthy people fed by low-cost fast food chains that pack a lot of fat, calories and crap into every meal. We all pay for our fat friends - probably hundreds of thousands per - because unless they change their habits, they will become very sick adults.

I would say anything the First Lady can do to turn this preventable situation around is a great thing. In the meantime, although it is a cruel thing to say, one could think of each obese child as a two hundred-thousand-dollar medical expense on the hoof.

An obese child usually doesn't get that way without the help of ignorant, distracted parents. Anything society can do to fix that is a good thing. We will pay for it if we don't.

An unhealthy society (as ours indisputably is) cannot compete economically against the world. Thirty percent of our young people are seriously but curably unhealthy. Anything we can do to change that is good. We will lose our place as an economic leader if we don't.

I would say that teaching one's children to eat properly and exercise daily is nothing short of a patriotic duty

I'll tell you where there is no argument -- our chlidren are FAT. Not chubby, not pleasingly plump, not a little overweight that will go away with a growth spurt, but obese. Most of us can remember back when we were in school that the morbidly obese or the very fat child did exist but was pretty much an anomoly. Take a walk around your neighorhood these days and see how many kids and teenagers are dangerously overweight. It's astounding. For palin to criticize the First Lady for trying to educate about the benefits of better eating choices and exercise is being her usual dumb, snarky, opportunistic self. This nation is raising a generation of children who don't measure up physically or educationally to the rest of the world. We do need to get up off the couch and quit thinking we are so much better than everybody else because we are very powerful. Resting on ones laurels has never worked. We are getting passed by in double time.

Posted by: Sandydayl | December 21, 2010 12:12 PM | Report abuse

It is self indulgent to eat food because of the sugar content. If we just take a little time and effort there are thousands of recipes on the Internet that are low fat and healthy and taste good.
We do have physical bodies that need exercise, it is just a fact of life. For example you need strong muscles around your knees to support the ligaments that in turn make the joint move the way it is supposed to. Stomach muscles support the internal organs and the spine, their purpose is not to wow people when you are on the beach.
Being defiant and running out into traffic when we have been told to stop at the curb does not make sense.

I'm not a liberal (am center-right) but I, among others, realize Sarah's approaching the edge of sanity. She first said this a couple weeks ago, then (I guess) didn't get enough reaction so she said it again on the show - she doesn't realize how many people disagree with her (obese kids' parents, doctors, dentists, the AMA, diabetes associations, the military, etc - not all are liberals).

I didn't have a problem with Nancy Reagan telling me not to use drugs, I didn't have a problem with Laura Bush telling me to help a child read, I don't have a problem with Michelle Obama telling us to eat right and move! First ladies are NOT elected and it's traditional for them to latch on to a non controversial issue. It's only the disrespect the rednecks have for this first lady that make this an issue. Ridiculous and pitiful, not to mention very anti American and non-Christian.

Just because Ms. Obama does not have a body structure that appeals to you does not mean she is out of shape. She has an exercise plan of treadmill and lifting weights. If you have a problem with her encouraging children to eat right and exercise then I suggest you visit one of our schools. You will not believe how many of the kids are overweight, it is a national disgrace. We as a country have lost sight of what a healthy, normal weight person looks like. If Palin had any conscience she would join the fight against childhood obesity which is contributing to an epidimic rise in childhood diabetes.

I'm not so sure about that, Sailorboy. Just because you sit up and salute every time she winks, that doesn't mean she's altruistic and 100% honest to the rest of us. She put in a full dig on the First Lady, and there was a time when patriotic Americans would take that as a slap on all the rest of us. Shame on the Post for running this story! They must know that Palin's remark is not true, yet they decided to write an article about it anyway, repeating Palin's false message that Michelle Obama doesn't want us to ever have dessert. How absurd!

So why didn't the Post clarify the truth? If this article is a satire, does the Post think it's funny that Palin is spreading lies about what Mrs. Obama stands for? And why aren't they calling out Palin for lying? Palin does this all the time and gets away with it, because the media isn't doing their job.

Palin sets up a straw man--"Mrs. Obama doesn't want you to ever have dessert"--and then proceeds to strike it down. Shame on the Post for going along with it.

Palin is being typically macho, but the truth is, she doesn't eat dessert either. If she did, she wouldn't be so thin.

I find this topic rather ironic and hypocritical. When one hears about "personal responsibility" - it comes mainly in the form of Republican demagoguery. As a nation, we aren't doing too well on this.

I remember when I was a child, the grocery stores were a lot smaller. When I walk the cereal aisle, or the juice aisle or the frozen food aisle, I see items that wouldn't have been on shelves 40 years ago.

However, when someone like Michelle Obama takes on a cause of reducing childhood obesity, she gets lambasted by Sarah Palin (who was pregnant when she married Todd and has a unmarried daughter with a child.)
Let's not forget that the diet of youngsters are formed in the family circle, and if the parents are improperly feeding their children, we'll have fat youngsters. Let's not add being a video game/cable tv couch potato to the mix.

So, Sarah, do you want Michelle Obama to shill for the fast food industry? Be a spokesperson for Hostess Bakeries or Hershey?

People get angry over this stuff, and point out the hypocrisy. However, in truth, it's just for Sarah Palin to have another news day.

I'd wish she'd stay up in Alaska and just shut up. She is irrelevant.

Hadn't thought of this - Darwin at work (maybe some will even speed up the process by eating three meals of pies and Twinkies just to spite Michelle).

The last time I checked we lived with a conservative administration for 8 years as kids just kept getting fatter and fatter. Congratulations on coaching children on the weekend however not every parent can afford to put their children in weekend sports programs they need PE in the schools to encourage exercise that a person can participate in for their life. Remember the old home ec classes? Those need to be reinstated and required classes to teach our children nutrition and healthful eating. When your military is rejecting 25% of their recruits because they are overweight something needs to change.

Sarah's son Track had a choice while faceing the Judge for a crime. Either take jail or join the Military. He picked the Military and Sarah hasn't mentioned his name since. Yes for those who support Sarah remember your picking what you and your children will follow. Not many Mom's want their kids to follow the Palin children's path or maybe they do. As someone who is trying to avoid spending my good old years in the heavy sector, I'm proud that there are people trying to prevent kids from becoming obese. There are several factors that food doesn't fully cover. Most Americans are not as active as they were say 10 and 20 years ago. I spent most of my grade school days either playing organized sports, exploring the woods of Charles County, or games of street hockey. College probably hit me the worse as well as 8 day work weeks (exaggeration) upon graduating. I'm exercising more and hoping to compete in the Warrior Dash next year as a goal for the upcoming year. The problem with us not being as active is sadly due to technology. Kids play a lot more video games than I did when I was a child. I had more fun playing war with the neighborhood friends more so than any FPS today.

The reality is fast-food and being couch potatoes is not healthy for our bodies. Yes it's fine in small doses, but it cannot be a daily activity. So if we as America want to beat being "whales" go walk for 30-60 minutes a day and go home and make your meals. Home cooked burgers are so much better than the flabby patty most joints offer.

First of all, let me say, I am mother too, and a pretty good one at that. And I am also cool, at least both of my son's think so.

Secondly, let me say, I have raised two fine educated young men. I cooked a healthy meal for them every day, while working outside of the home with fresh vegetables and meats when they were growing up. I still cook healthy meals for them every now and then, now that they are grown, because right now, it is the only place that they know they will be able to get some good old fashioned home cooking.

They still eat their vegetables and every other nutritional food of value that I cook for them. No questions asked.

Besides, I did not give them a choice of what they could eat when growing up. I also made sure that both boys participated in extra curriculum activities, i.e., soccer, football, and basket ball while growing up in school. I was at their practices and games, during those years they played in grade school and high school. As grown men they are both still physically fit and active in sports and healthy overall.

Finally, I also taught my sons about the perils and tribulations of sex outside of marriage. I talked to my sons a great deal when they were growing up to respect young ladies and women, and to abstain from pre-marital sex as much as possible and if it got to the point were they could not, then they must NOT only protect themselves from disease and unwanted pregnancies from some young ladie(s,) who pursued them on a daily basis, but also from those that they may have possibly wanted to pursue. At 27 & 24, both young men do not have any health issues related to eating bad foods as a source of nutritional value and both are still focused on their own independence and stability and neither have children by any momma's.

With that, Michelle Obama reminds me of me, as a mother, as opposed to the Sarah Palin kinds of mother's, who for whatever reason, enjoy clubbing flounder over the head, and who do not seem to spend a great deal of time with their children teaching them about the benefits of safe sex, physical exercise, and eating healthy.

I'll take Michelle Obama, any day over that moose shooting, bear hunt in, fish beating momma.

Further evidence that Sarah Palin is "a nut job" (not that any was needed). The sooner the GOP rids itself of the impresseion that she is a "leader" of the Party the better off it will be.

She cost the Party the election in '08 and several Senate seats this past November (only the two Palin like "nutjobs" whom the GOP ran as its candidates in Nev. and Del. could have lost those elections).

It apears that the coverage the media gives her is part of a Left Wing "liberal conspiriscy" designed to get her the Republican nomination for the Presidency.

Are some of you who take the time to post comments on this site and others as completely stupid and uninformed as you appear to be. Mrs. Obama nor anyone else in government is attempting to control what people eat. However, Ms. Obama is simply attempting to start a national movement toward what most of us took for granted as kids, running around and playing and getting exercise. Those of you who disagree with Mrs. Obama's efforts should take a look around you, perhaps in your own homes and family. Our kids, yes kids, are fat and a large percentage are obese. Significant percentages of kids are now having health issues that were once only associated with older people, i.e. diabetes, heart disease, etc... Somethings, and I truly believe this is one such thing, should not be bashed simply because the proponent is someone of a different political party. Nancy Reagan told kids to "just say no to drugs". Barbara Bush and Laura Bush told our children to read more books. Those were great ideas, I don't care who proposed them. As a nation we decided to discourage smoking because it kills millions of Americans each year. As a nation we require our children to receive vacinations because they save millions of lives. Mrs. Obama is simply attempting to raise the national consceince to childhood obesity that will cut short the lives of millions of now young people. To me its a no brainer. Its not Democratic or Republican, its just a good and right thing to do. Lastly, Sarah Palin is a ridiculous, ignorant lying clown. Mrs. Obama never said that we should not eat desert. Rather she told a story about her saying to Sasha and Malia, her two daughters, desert wasn't a right for THEM. In the end Mrs. Obama recognizes that parents/guardians have to make the final decisions about what they allow their kids to eat but she can and should use her platform to raise the level of discourse and awareness regarding healthy eating and childhood obesity.

The whole thing is kind of silly. Eating right and healthy is something that starts at home, and communities are set up where you pretty much have to drive everywhere, so you rarely get out to walk.

America is going to continue to get fatter and obese as long as parents spend less time teaching their children how to eat right. No amount of government intervention will fix something that needs to be solved within the home.

Then, goes on to say (rightly), that the real problem is parents not informing their children of the proper way to eat. But, bizarrely, states that this is the reason they are against Mrs. Obama encouraging parents to teach their children about the proper way to eat. ?????

cruiszn parrots the discredited Palinista lines about frivolus lasuits, Democrats, millions, etc.

Fact: The ethics complaints as of July 1, 2009, two days before she quit, cost state a total of $296,000. 63 percent or $187,797 was attributed to Palin's complaint against herself with the Personnel Board (btw, all handpicked by her) in Troopergate investigation; brazen attempt to derail legislative probe into firing of Walt Monnegan. Plus, costs were routine salaries and expenses; no OT or undue burden to AK.

http://www.adn.com/palin/story/850854.html

http://factcheck.org/2010/02/tea-party-fact-checking/

The claim that the state would not pay for her legal counsel is another lie. The state entered into a contract with Van Flein's (Palin's lawyer)firm to cover a portion of the costs; state never received in bills or invoices from firm. Palin felt it better to seek out private funding sources.

The claim that Obama or DNC behind complaints: NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER. Van Flein asserted this on Greta Van Susteren in July 2009 yet when pressed, could not offer ONE shred of evidence. Furthermore, a fair amount of complaints were from a REPUBLICAN, Andree McCleod. So, another LIE from Palin and her camp. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,530620,00.html

cruiszn's "analysis" about Palin's attractiveness being the cause of much criticism shows the level of discourse her backers operate on. They attempt to reduce serious issues to a middle school or high school hallway or popularity contest for student council or Prom king/queen; jocks, cheerleaders & cool kids vs geeks, stoners and outcasts. They ALWAYS predicatbly play the "anyone who criticizes Sarah must be some jealous hag or sissy, homosexual America hating liberal/Marxist/Muslim/fascist (or other AM Radio label of the day)" card rather than address the issue on the table on merit.

The Palinbots' arguments are predicatble and pedantic: Sarah's hot; she's a great mom; she is a common sense conservative who loves America (married to a man who ws part of a party dedicated to hating America and perceives military personnel in AK as hostile occupies; founder died in explosives deal gone bad; 2 days before he was slated to preach his hatred at UN, sponsored by...IRAN) and has real experience. Michelle Obama has good taste in vacation spots. Of course no one would expect the Obama family to vacation in Haiti or the Gulf Coast. Sarah Palin was sincere in her visit to Haiti. However, the prize goes to Michelle for vacations in Spain and Hawaii. We can only hope that Barrack is not keeping the First Lady waiting on the beaches of Kailua.

Hawaii waits for Obama at the beach community of Kailua Neighborhood of multi million dollar beachfront homes. Virginia Camohan could be surprised by more tourists. It is rumored among the gay rights groups that Obama will invite them all to Hawaii to celebrate the repeal of DADT victory of the Democrat lame duck session of Congress.

It could be a gala event with beach parties, no swim suit requirements, open showers for Gays to mingle with straights on the beaches and all Gay Hawaii military should attended. The theme for parties surrounding the Obama family will be “Ask Me and I Will Tell You” and “O Obama Our Civil Rights Hero”. No reservations required for the public beaches. This is a silly unreached article to appeal to the selfish whims of adults. What I wish to address is the historically misunderstood Marie Antoinette. "let them eat cake" was in response to the French government urging peasants to plant potatoes and not wheat. Weather changes at that time resulted in failed wheat crops. The peasants refusing to plant potatoes because they felt it stigmatized them thus resulting their starvation. Marie's response was ominous historically. Can't you just see the parallel to Michele Obama urging people to eat greens. The French Royal family was eatting potatoes and using potatoe flour as an example to their people.

Ms Palin is a snarky anti-elite, new right elite. She prides herself in not being thoughtful or deliberate. She is more about bashing other educated people as elites, than about seeing anything through based on her own hard work.

Michelle Obama is a thoughtful woman who is deeply interested in how to move the nation in the direction of better health and nutrition. She has applied herself to getting a great education, moving from very humble beginnings to becoming first lady. She warm and engaging, is never snarky, and never takes cheap shots.

Actually, someone above said President Kennedy created the Council on Physical Fitness. While he did make the issue a key one, the Council was created and given Cabinet status by his predecessor, who had been to Europe, studied and familiarized himself with the norms and conventions o others and would be considered today some type of eggheaded elitist. While Stevenson mocked Ike, it showed Stevnson's ignorance because Ike was a man who knew the world, knew WHY and HOW the Wehrmacht and its auxillaries like the fearsome SS were the elite forces they were and had a track record to back his candidacy up, from Supreme Allied Commander to President of Columbia (later Obama's alma mater) and NATO commander.

http://www.fitness.gov/about_history.htm

That said, those who tout Palin's fitness credentials ostensibly have forgotten this little gem:

http://thedailyfix.com/2009/12/17/sarah-palins-ass-and-thighs-have-just-gone-rogue-on-her/

The magazine cover of her in shorts was obviously well edited and she looked as though she was wearing tan hose in the photo, similar to Hooters girls in order to make her legs look more toned and sheer.

The thing is, Palin constantly inserts herself into every issue, big or small, regardless of whether she possesses the facts necessary to do such and tries to dictate the debate without actually ever debating; hiding behind Facebook, Fox or Twitter and only doing non Fox interviews with pop culture mavens like Walters, Winfrey or to a degree Robin Roberts, whose interview was practically kissy face, asking Palin about her family, snowmobiling on one of her husband's machines and not challenging her on her claims.

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/entertainment/zontv/2010/12/kissing_up_to_sarah_palin_for.html

Until she can Meet the Press or Face the Nation or give interviews outside the pop culture bubble in prime time and w/o home (court) advantage and face real questions not given her in advance and demonstrate she has done some homework over last two years, she is no more than a whiskey tango Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian.

And that's that.

This is a very strange period in America's history, when someone who acts as immaturely as Sarah Palin can actually be considered by a large number of people to be a potential candidate for President.

This childish "us versus them" mentality (Republicans versus Democrats, liberals versus conservatives) is bad enough when the average American engages in it, but a highly visible political figure like Sarah Palin? Why is she still in the news - why does anyone take her seriously?

The biggest threat to this country, in my opinion, is not terrorism, the environment, the economy etc. - it's the primitiveness of thought and the inability of the public to analyze issues and have reasonable discourse. It means that democracy, if not yet dead, is certainly dying.

This was the functional equivalent of telling them to eat cake, since white bread was for only the upper classes, the wealthy. It is a bit of an exagerration to think that Ms. Obama's comments are a sign of the government's to take complete control of our lives. Promoting a healthy lifestyle should be applauded considering th statistics regarding childhood obesity. This have an affect on all of us since it ties directly to the health care costs for all Americans. Someone stated that the government has already kicked out God. According to the separation of church and state, that's the idea. We have a democracy not a theocracy. I don't believe the forefathers would have a problem with that.

Palin had better keep her comments to herself. She has no business talking about another Mothers way of doing things. After all, she's the one w/ the daughter who had a child out of wedlock and another daughter who has professed to having sex w/out benefit of marriage. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
Further, she as always, does not have the facts straight...Mrs. Obama never said that anyone should be deprived of dessert. Palin just wants to keep her name in the paper and on tv. She knows her days are numbered. Look at her recent book sales...or should say, lack of sales?!

People should stop acting like their poor health doesn't affect other people. The more problems Americans have with preventable forms of diabetes and heart disease, the more people who make responsible, healthy decisions have to pay in health insurance. Your freedom to eat cake is a tax on my freedom to do other things.

Ms. Petri:

I find it rather intriguing that you didn’t offer the same passionate argument about New York City mayor, Michael Bloomberg, requesting the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to ban food stamp recipients from purchasing soda in an effort to encourage parents to seek healthier alternatives. While you can make the weak argument that Bloomberg’s paternalistic attitude towards low income NYC residents is justified because they are receiving food subsidies from the government, please note that a significant portion of Palinites are receiving a government subsidy of some sort (e.g. Medicare, Social Security, SSI, etc.) and believe that they, too, have the right to purchase – with the same tax dollars – high fat, high caloric treats for their children because they are “real Americans” (read: white).

I guess paternalism is only a bad thing when the disciplinarians are African American.

I love reading these types of "columns" in the Post. It's quite interesting to see how the "columnist" spins a comment and can rile up the liberal base. Any sort of comment from a Conservative that can be remotely construed as a shot across the bow of the Obama agenda stirs up the hornets nest. It's funny how the Liberals don't see that their individual rights are being taken away one small step at a time. While I do agree that Americans should eat better and definitely work out more, it is not the place of the government to force us to do so. It's a personal choice. I find it even more appalling to see that the government has expanded the Federal school lunch program in a false attempt to provide better food. The whole agenda was just to actually feed more people and make more dependent upon the government because these children's parents are too stupid to feed their children correctly. This whole personal irresponsibility is leading to government intrusion into everyone's lives, more so than it already is. The most depressing of the whole situation is that most of these liberals and Democrats are too dumb to realize it and merrily follow into the abyss.

Palin the First Lady has no interest in entertaining a petty issue with you. You have nothing in common with Michele. Palin you are petty, a hater, greedy, self absorted person.

When I grew up, my family raised vegetables. Fresh vegetables helped keep the weight off and medical proble down. We had desserts on special occassions and Sunday. It was a treat and something to look forward too.

Today's young people are over weight and face major health problems as early as age 25. To be young, over weight and unhealthy leads to depression, obesity, diabeties, high blood pressure, high cholerstal and all types of health issues. This problem is compounded by higher cost of medical care for health insurance, medical care, job discrimnation, discrimnation period. Not to mention the public reaction and remarks or jobs. The cost of clothes for fat people cost more because more fabric is being used.

The First Lady is correct to encourage young people to eat the foods that will help you live longer. Palin you are not in the same arena with Michelle. Michelle care about people. Palin care about MONEY. Michelle knows that all the money in the world can not buy happiness. Palin did not get the memo - she is still trying to buy happiness.

The minute this nation left cigarettes LEGAL but made laws against allowing smoking here there and everywhere, I knew we were headed for disaster. I instantly said, "my bacon double cheeseburger is next", and I was so right!

California has already put laws in place about fast food joints! If there are already x number of them in this square mile radius, they will not allow another one to be built! How @!#$ stupid is that?

Yes, of course eating too much and exercising too little will result in obesity and death ... but so will other things! Currently some people are taking Natural Animal Thyroid Hormone from pigs because they have thyroid disease. It has been used for over 100 years with no problems for the patients. (My own father had a defective heart valve, and it was replaced when he was 67 & he lived to be 83 with no anti-rejection drugs, etc., BECAUSE PIGS ARE HERE FOR US TO USE!) Anyway, this Natural Animal Thyroid Hormone is the cheapest med in the world because it is a byproduct of pork production. Doc's say it's bad = unstable! Hogwash! If the steaks, the chops and the hams are ok to eat, the thyroid med is ok to take! Again, over 100 years and no complaints! But, "big Pharma" has sought for years to get rid of this cheap med because it does a great job! Their pukey synthetics might mask symptoms, but they don't address the problem! That means the patient gets worse and worse over the years and finally is taking dozens of meds! A bonus for the docs and big pharma! Now today, we are at a point where the Natural Animal Thyroid Hormone is being taken away from us, and every day more and more of us are suffering and gaining weight instead of losing weight, and gaining additional problems like organs that can no longer function properly! But the FDA is doing nothing to help the patients & allowing some synthetic drugs to be sold that have never passed their own tests! BELIEVE ME, No On Wants to Be Fat! No one! And if you are living the good life, eating right, sleeping right, exercising right, etc., you are NOT going to be made fat by eating dessert! Not even if you eat it with all 3 meals! Yes, eat your veggies first, but you CAN eat dessert! JUST GIVE US BACK OUR NATURAL ANIMAL THYROID HORMONE & DO IT NOW BECAUSE WE ARE ORGANIZING! Your days are numbered in Wash D.C. if you are part of the problem instead of part f the solution!

Good article. See you can write well, Missy. lol.

Moms respond to the different environments they raise their kids in and it depends on each individual kid they raise (every kid is different). My younger and only sister needed to be told what to do (she was accident prone) so my Mom would tell her, but I could figure out things for myself from an early age so she just sort of advised and helped when I asked for help, and with my kid brother she micro-manages (he was the baby of the family and likes being the baby of the family). Now since I was martial-arts trained and could kill a grown man in under thirty seconds (yes, with my bare hands, clichéd as that sounds) by the time I was in my early teens (and the fact that I was above six foot tall by then) my mother let me roam free with just a warning ("don't kill anybody and try to be civilized"), but my sister who is physically tiny (now fully grown at only five foot two) needed an escort and a car at her disposal, and since my kid brother only got up to a purple belt (just below brown belt in his branch) in Karate he too gets an escort and a car at his disposal. lol.

Now Sarah Palin is raising kids in Alaska where she has to teach them to survive and thrive in an environment where the weather can kill you (or lack of hunting skills or lack of food can - where even sugar will save your life because you'll need to burn it to generate body heat) - she needs to raise independent thinking "frontier" girls and boys. Michelle Obama's concerns are different because the environment is different, so she has to respond differently to raise healthy kids who are "proper ladies". lol.

You have to take things into perspective, and relate it to your own experiences, to try to understand the situations are different for each Mom. lol.

Wish Alexandra was more mature about this painful topic. I'm not entertained by her sophmoric attitude.
It would be nice if we were to take better care of ourselves so that we didn't have the medical problems associated with food abuse and you'd think someone with a column with the Washington Post would write a little more intelligently about something the U.S. struggles with - obesity.
Hope she's being funny but it didn't entertain me. I fight eating poorly and would love to eat whatever I want, but have been taught well by my mother - and life.
The health care industry gets rich off us abusing our bodies. We suffer with poor health. Get the idea? We're not going to win by ignoring the problem.
Wasn't a fun article at all.

Lessee here.

Either Alexandra Petri is making a serious argument - that the average American voter has the mental capacity and emotional maturity of a six year old, and thus cannot possibly be counted upon to do what is "right", but can be counted to blindly follow any demagogue who makes promises of, quite literally, manna from heaven...

...or she is trying to belittle the argument - and, presumably, the Palins and Becks of the world - by pretending to side with them against the "eat your vegetables crowd" while actually demonstrating the ridiculousness of that position, since the average American voter cannot possibly be that immature and, for lack of a better word, dimwitted.

Hmm.

You know, I'm not quite sure which way to lean on this one. Although I will say that irrespective of which of the two interpretations above corresponds to what the author was actually trying to convey, the "average member" of any electorate in a system with universal suffrage, by definition, is _not_ educated in the finer points of economics, political science or fiscal policy, and, frankly, has little enough time to worry about such things; does _not_ possess above-average intellectual or analytical gifts (since everyone cannot be above average - someone has to be at or below the mean!); and, as a consequence, _is_ easily swayed by effective propaganda-slash-demagoguery. The content of the latter does not matter - as long as the propaganda is deployed according to certain principles (e.g. simple slogans repeated ad infinitum), the average voter will believe such. In this sense, the Palins of the world have the distinct advantage over the Michelle Obamas.

Not by coincidence, the Founding Fathers had _not_ subscribed the notion of universal suffrage precisely because they wished to limit voting powers to the "educated men of means" who, the theory went, would be less easily swayed by demagoguery. Hence the invention of things such as the Electoral College. I suppose this makes the majority of them closer to a Michelle Obama than to a Sarah Palin, for better or worse...

It's not about Michelle Obama taking control of what we eat. She's trying to set a good example for our children. Do you know that depending on the state you live in, the percentage of obese Americans varies from 20% to 33%? SarahPalin's state Alaska, comes in ranked 24th , with 26.9% of the population being obese. http://health.msn.com/health-topics/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100261061
One of those in Alaska I would assume would be Bristol, her daughter. Do you also know that obesity causes disease, diabetes and early death? In 2004, Obesity related illnesses cost tax payers $39 Billion. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2004-01-22-obesity_x.htm

Maybe Sarah Palin should look into really caring for her daughter, and her past constituency. A few missed desserts might not be a bad idea for Bristol and the rest of America. But the pharmaceutical companies might not like the population losing weight and being healthy. I mean their stock may go down, and drug companies are a big buyer of petroleum based products. Not my words, Sarah's.
http://trendsupdates.com/sarah-palin-advocates-for-local-oil-production-%E2%80%9Cdrill-baby-drill%E2%80%9D/

So in turn eating a dessert would be helping the oil industry, which is Sarah Palin's mother's milk. All roads lead to the oil industry in this country. And Sarah Palin is paving the way.

beck says, "First politician that comes up to me with a carrot stick, I've got a place for it. And it's not in my tummy."

beck and palin are idiots. Sure, they, like everyone else can eat what they want. But why is it that when someone like Michelle Obama simply suggests that people eat more healthy food, these two morons go ballistic?

A very large percentage of our population is obese; a very large percentage has type II diabetes, often a result of obesity. Many of these people are children.

If it offends beck and palin that Michelle Obama recommends that people eat fruits and vegetables, they should just not listen to her. You know, if Michelle Obama suggested nothing at all about how to improve our health, especially that of our children, you just know that these pukes like beck and palin and their ilk would complain that she and her husband were not saying anything.

Really; if this is all about in the name of "freedom," it sounds like people like beck and palin would absolish all rules about air pollution and water pollution and just let companies do whatever they please because, after all, it is in the "name of freedom."

Anyone in opposition to Mrs. Obama's health initiative should really wake up and get off of the conservative talking point kool aid. Every First Lady has a national agenda issue that she spearheads in order to assist the President in presiding over a more educated, safe, or health-conscious country. Mrs. Obama's healthy food consumption agenda is extremely appropriate considering that we have the highest levels of obesity and childhood obesity in the world. It's ridiculous to badmouth her for attempting to make a difference for this generation's and future generations' health. Both Bush Sr.'s and Bush Jr.'s wives were not attacked for their contributions to society. If anyone's should have been disputed, it would have to be Mrs. Reagan's "Just Say No" stance on drugs, as the vast failure of her husband's drug war in terms of billions of dollars wasted, mandatory minimum sentences that put non-violent offenders in prison with violent and mentally ill individuals, and continued high levels of drug abuse show the ineffectiveness of that policy. I'm getting off of my soapbox now, but anyone who thinks that Sarah Palin's parenting abilities and intelligence even remotely rivals Mrs. Obama's is obviously not paying attention. Go ahead if you want and feed your children fatty, processed foods and cheaply imported, toxic grown vegetables from China. Keep giving them all of the food containing high fructose corn syrup and see how many of them develop juvenile diabetes or other health problems. The First Lady chose an extremely relevant topic to address and I hope enough people start to make better decisions about their own and their childrens' health before the obesity epidemic gets even worse than it already is.....talk about rising health care costs......

And this comment..."Palin has ever right to remind Americans that Michelle Obama's nuitritional campaign is pile of nonsense." reveals what an imbecile you are. Does Palin have the right to speak her mind? Of course she does. But that doesn't make her right. Is Obama's nutritional campaign a pile of nonsense? Not by a long shot. AMERICANS ARE FAT!!! There is an obesity epidemic in the US. When I travel to foreign countries, I often try to understand how they are different from Americans and one of the things that almost screams out at you is the dearth of obese people. I don't need statistics to tell me what is painfully obvious.

This is not a matter of left or right, but a life style that has taken over too many Americans. I can't think of a better way for our nation to get back on track - by starting to take care of ourselves and getting fit.

Just curious as to where Mr. Beck would prefer the carrot if not in his tummy?

Americans are fat and anyone who bothers to frequent supermarkets will attest to the fact that women pushing those carts have saddlebags and derrieres that could challenge a hippo and men have bellies that resemble a woman in her 8th month of pregnancy. There's a reason for that and the pervasiveness of fast food and a sedentary life style is 50% of the problem. Self control is the other half.

I don't want anyone telling me what to eat or drink but really, if people are completely out of control over something like food, imagine what America would be like if currently illegal recreational drugs were made legal and easily available. Not a pretty picture.

She's not a style icon (reference the polyester pantsuit she wore in Indonesia that showed all of her lumps). She does not devote her efforts as First Lady to any cause. She's the laziest one in decades. She and her Chicago friends are out having a great time.
Sarah Palin can make a crack about Michelle and desserts. Big deal. Political correctness shouldn't make the Obamas off limits. Sarah and her brood don't sit around on their rears. They're fit and active enough to have dessert every day. Michelle would be out of breath trying to keep up with them.

Sarah Palin thinks bullying Michelle Obama will help her win Class President in 2012. In high school asserting dominance over other girls was an important part of popularity and could even get you elected. Besides, Sarah is the type who doesn't put on pounds no matter what she eats. She's that thin girl who always tells you to have another cookie and then makes fun of your fat heinie behind your back. If kids take Michelle's advice it will take her fun away.

It's a tragedy that Sarah went into politics. Her talents are wasted there. I think she sensed this and it made her quit the governor job. She should wake up and realize this before running for president. You can't really quit president, even if Nixon did, once. President isn't really up her alley. Television is. Sarah's strengths are entertaining by being as petty and shallow as people wish they could if they didn't have to worry about what people think or God sending them to Hell. She's like the Paris Hilton of Alaska but with shooting caribou instead of tequila shots, and other differences, like more underwear.

Oh and I think Glenn Beck is weird. I would have thought he was against using carrots for that.

Let me get this straight. Sarah wants to be president. We've got the unhealthiest generation of children (and adults) in the country's history, primarily due to overeating and lack of exercise. Parents are tuning in to fitness shows, consulting psychologists, reading health books, listening to Dr. Phil and a thousand others... and Sarah says, "Don't give them advice!" Let the kids and their health suffer! This is the empathy, compassion and concern we want from a president? Does she ever think before she opens her mouth? Or is the opportunity to shoot at someone just too tempting, no matter the soundness of what they say?

Sarah makes a cute comment about the s'mores probably no doubt thinking..."Oh no! the libs are gonna make a big deal out of me making sweets for kids and say I'm doing it as some in your face, Michelle thing!"...So Sarah knew someone was gonna make a big deal out of it anyway so she spoke her mind about what most American's fear about Michelle's campaign and that is that they fear it is the beginning of a ban on fattening foods like they are attempting to make law in San Fran..in banning happy meals there...or like Bloomberg in NYC is trying to get salt banned.
For Mr. Handsome please know that city and states have those rights in policing people like that but the White House (Congress/President) are limited in power and laws they impose because whatever laws they enact must be an elected issue by WE THE PEOPLE...THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE WANTING THAT LAW. If Michelle begins to impose laws without it being the will of the people then she oversteps her limits as our First Lady. Obama in his book said he sought out communist, marxist, and socialist, many of the people he has put in czar positions are those that are self professing communist, socialist, etc. and like Irene Dunn, who admired Mao...who starved his own people. Any of those far left ideologies exalt the teachings of mad men that had regulated food production and consumption.
Obama's pathway to the Presidency is framed by socialist, marxist, and communist influences beginning with his father, his mentor Frank Marshall Davis, Bill Ayers, his radical black liberation church he attended for 20 years that adhered to the teachings of James Cone that said "D... any God, even Jesus if he is not for the progression of the black man"...This is who we have in office and we are hoping he is sensing and knowing that it is time to rethink his pathway ..not just say things to appease Americans but hopefully he and Michelle will genuinely begin to embrace America ideals and values and see the error in this far left ideologies.

This whole issue of Sarah Palin against the First Lady is ridiculous. Whether said in jest or for real is it not her right to say what she feels. What I resent is the way we are being treated as children by this administration as if we do not know what is good for us. I raised and home schooled my children. They are all healthy productive members of society. None are obese and never were and we ate our fair share of fast foods. They were taught to make good choices in food and daily life. As they grew older we didn't tell them what to do we discussed their decisions and the consequences that could follow and they made their decisions from there. Have they made mistakes? Absolutely just as their father and I have. Does that mean the government should take over and make our decisions for us? Absolutely NOT. We were created with a free will, but there are consequences and if people had to face their own consequences instead of being bailed out and the blame put on someone or something else we would all be better off. Stop trying to tell people how they should live. The only time there should be any intervention is when there is real and immediate threat to life and safety. And I don't mean telling me I have to eat my vegetables. Or that my children need to be indoctrinated into something I don't believe in or is against my religion. As parents we should be able to "opt" the child out of programs, classes or literature chosen by someone who believes that the vulgar language is outweighed by the "message" in the book. Our ancestors immigrated (legally) here to get away from being told how to live, worship and eat as well as what our children should have to learn in the guise of political correctness.

My understanding is that our so called "healthy President" is a heavy smoker (of course, he's trying to quit...) but as we all know, it's not that easy to give up on your vices. Therefore, I won't tell you to quit smoking (I can only suggest), and 'YOU' and no one else for that matter, should tell me not to eat a WHOPPER (YOU can only suggest) if I want to... at the same time, don't you dare to tell me to eat a carrot if I don't want to. Live your own darn life and let others live theirs... is that what America is all about??? Such a bunch of morons out there! I along with many other people believe that having the government control what we eat is extreme to a point. However, people place themselves in this position by relying on the government to pay their health cost, if you rely on the government for free medical care, then the government should have some say in what people eat including school kids. It would be a smart and a money saver for the government to regulate some foods that we eat, if the tax payers are going to foot the bill, then why would we want people and kids in school becoming obese and adapting heart conditions. This would only make paying for health care more costly. Sometimes I think people only see one side of it because they are so strung up on their freedoms, however, some of our freedoms are our own worst enemies. I think Sara Palin should stop trashing Michelle Obama. Sara is just jealous because she is not sitting in the White House; Michelle is doing an awesome job. Sara is always the first one out there to trash anyone who does not believe the way she does, she continues to exploit herself and her children on television for popularity for herself. For example, Sara Palin had no concern for teens getting pregnant out of wedlock until her daughter had a baby, this shows that Sara Palin lacks common sense between rights and wrong, she only goes along with what is popular and what the people want. However, like most politicians, Sara continues to get the people on her side by agreeing with whatever they say and whatever they want. But when it all boils down, she too will become a politician that lies to the people just to get their vote, because in reality she alone cannot make the all the rules, that is why we have a Congress. In regards to the Presidency, too much power cannot be given to one person, because we are all humans and we are all capable of becoming corrupt and make bad judgments. In regards to President Obama and in reality, no one but God can take over the Presidency and clean up an 8 year mess left behind. I think people should start giving credit to Obama and start being part of the solution and help fix our broken country. I wonder if those in Congress realize that their behavior is being watched by the younger generation and their behavior is sometimes worse than what you would see in an elementary school. I am sure if you asked several children how Congress should be acting, they would certainly tell you that they should stop fighting and learn to get along. As long as we as a country continue to bicker, fight, be prejudice and hate, we will always be vulnerable to terrorism and countries who want to do us harm. We need to set our difference aside and for once, stand together as a nation; this might be what it takes for this country to survive the mess we are in. We should look at every situation that is causing a great deal of hassle and fix it according to what is best for our country and not just one individual. God will prevail

Thi issue about what to eat comes from a woman who kills wild game on television and eats it. Does she know for a fact that the game she kills does not carry any diseases? She only goes along with what the people want til she gets her power, then you will see a different Sara Palin, for those of you who back her , you will be left in the dust like everyone else if she becomes President. She only wants the presidency to prove she can do it and for popularity. This attitude shows through her daughter who was on Dancing with the stars, when Bristol was interviewd, she blamed her not winning the show on all the Palin haters, and not on the fact that there was an honest hard working dancer who had much more experience and showed much more spirit. That is what Sara does, she does not have the experience to run a country, most of her experience is gained from being vindictive, prejudice and hateful towards people who rise above her. Even Bristol's boyfriend said the same thing, he is an outsider that knows what goes on in the Palin house, she is fooling the American people,

If you want to know what goes on in a coprporation, Then ask the guy who sweeps the floors at night.

There is nothing wrong with the first lady choosing a cause to promote, even healthier eating. It only becomes suspect when we know that the policies of her husband and the left seek to control every area of the life of the average American. It is the attitude: We know what is best for you, you are too stupid to figure it out yourself.
These policies take away the precious liberties that were gained when this nation rejected tyranny. Now I suspect that government control and dictates cause all of us to break laws and regulations every single day, and we don't even know it.

So then the cry; Let's have some s'mores! is the new mantra in the name of liberty.

All I see here is attacks on Palin and Obama. If obesity is an issue then the govt can encourage healthy eating in a number of ways. For example, make fresh foods non-taxable. For food stamp recipients, add premade foods (e.g. cakes, muffins, cookies, candy, etc) to a list that would prohibit food stamps from 'paying' for that item. Recipients would need to pay cash if they want the item. Another way the govt could help is put juices and water in schools instead of soda. In addition to juices at school, the FDA should require 100% fruit or vegetable juice be sold with no additives or high fructose corn syrup. In theory, make healthy foods affordable and high caloric items expensive.

I always thought the say was "fat, dumb and happy". I guess Glen Beck and Sarah Palin have redefined this to be "fat, dumb and angry". It is a sad day when people politicize health. I guess then Nancy Reagan was wrong to encourage Americans to say no to drugs also and Barbara Bush to encourage reading.

I'm shocked, shocked by the intolerance, hateful comments and, dare I say it, antipathy exhibited by those who rail against Sarah. We're been taught that all language and actions are permissible and should be celebrated - unless, of course, it is disparate from yours! Shame on you! You should be chiding yourself! Tolerance requires that everything is a legitimate opinion. The comments have nothing to do with the article, which through gentle parody clearly illustrates the disconnection between Obama, et al, and the real United States. I'm proud of her! She has hit a nerve! The government shouldn't intrude on our personal lives. For those of you who believe otherwise, I suggest emigration to China, Cuba, Venezuela, Russia and countless other countries with citizens who do not enjoy the right of expressing their hateful, intolerant and ill-reasoned inclinations. I'm sure they have room since their citizens risk their lives to escape.

Alexandra might have forgotten that Obama was elected to office on a platform of reform, which by it's nature is a difficult thing to do.
In the end, dressing hard things up as fun (which is what the Obamas have been trying to do) doesn't really work because they're HARD. You can listen to your favorite music while you jog, or... You could listen to it without all that sweating and labor at home on your couch.

It doesn't change the fact that these things need to be done, much like the chores your parents might have had you do as a child. The only difference is that we (hopefully) grew into ADULTS and started doing them without prompting, mostly because we had gotten burned from not following the advice other times. Don't feel like brushing your teeth? Get a painful cavity. Only want to eat junk food? You'll probably have social insecurities and health problems. All of these things might be hard truths, but it doesn't stop them from being TRUE.

So excuse me if I don't sympathize with Alexandra's whining. The Bush administration allowed industry and banking eight years to eat all the "s'mores" that they liked; now they're sick. It's time for our nation to take it's medicine.

Posted by: grkrshaw
--------------------------------------
Unfortunately we must be too stupid to figure it out for ourselves, take a look at the people in Walmart, Target, any local shopping mall or your work place. Visit one of the local schools and see how many people are not just chubby but are obese! This contributes to a myriad of health issues. Doctors are now reporting dangerously high cholesterol in elementary students. We are eating calories and fat on a daily basis that are equivalent to eating a Thanksgiving dinner. The message Ms. Obama is trying to put out is that it is OK to splurge occassionally not just everyday. So if you want to eat s'mores everyday along with Sara Palin, Glenn Beck and Rush go for it but don't complain when those chest pains start.

It is amazing how people can be called a socialist for expressing there feelings. Let's not forget that we as AMERICAN'S still have the ability to make our own decision on what and how to live our live's. Some of you that are placing your comments on here really need to stop and think about what you are saying. The First Lady has just made a statement that so many have made before her and now that she has said it it is taken in a totally different context. Well for those of you that don't understand what a socialist is then stand in front of the mirror and say your name 3 time. Palin and who ever is listening to the "garbage that is coming out of her mouth" are the real socialist. Maybe she should have went on Dancing with the Star's with her daughter maybe then AMERICA would want to hear what the reality Queen has to say. I don't see the need for Sarah Palin to take shots at Michelle Obama's initiative, but it is funny the Palin seems the fitter of the two of them. Also, the problem Mrs. Obama should have tackled a long time ago was her husband's smoking problem. Healthcare Reform, "Let's Move", and smoking.

As my 7 year old niece would say if she saw Mrs Obama in the grocery store, she would walk up to her and say "you're fat" especially if she saw her walking away. Come on people, put race aside and just answer who would you rather see in tight jeans? A cake eating, s'mores eating, sexy bod Sarah Palin, or a carrot eating overweight double standards preaching Michelle Obama. Point is if you are going to preach eating healthy, look the part first! Dont be a hypocrite! No one likes "do as I say, not as I do!" If Mrs Obama was eating only healthy food and putting in the gym or road work to keep her from having to wear full sized gowns to hide her oversized bulges, she would be less of a joke and less of a target when she goes out in public to preach the message "dont get fat" to fat Americans. Just another example of an Obama program missing the mark. Go Sarah! Obviously she gets it and is working out hard enough to burn more calories than you are taking in. Its a simple concept that should NOT be presented to Americans by someone who preaches one thing but looks like she is eating from a hidden stash of s'mores herself. But of course as with everything the dems do, its all smoke and mirrors and no one will ever reveal the truth. Would be nice to hear from the white house staff about Mrs Obama's real diet and exercise routines, not what is put out to the public.

Now you tell me Twinkies are bad for me and I'll get fat and be saddled with diabetes, fine. Educated, I can now CHOOSE to eat them anyway. But please, don't ban Twinkies (or s'mores) for my own good.

The Governor should know too well the consequences of not hammering the rules into the sometimes thick heads of kids. I am surprised that with the teenage prego experience, the governor has not realized that it is important for parents and those who may know better to perform their God-ordained role - that of nurturing and imparting knowledge to those who may not know.
I salute her rich experience as governor of Alaska as well as her strength of character as the courageous mother of a special needs infant but the topic of obesity clearly falls into the class of no-go-areas just like the subject of national security and diplomacy (remember the Katie interview?) Clearly not her forte.

If you think our children and grand children are doing so great you had better take a short trip to the local mall. We as a country are obese. Weight related diabetes is on the rise with children. Heart disease, high blood pressure, certain types of cancers are all on the rise and these are mostly weight related issues. Sarah Palin should be ashamed of herself for promoting obesity in a country that is already obese. It is really striking when you see clips of her followers mostly overweight, out-of-shape mid-westerners. As usually she is only telling you what you want to hear. Those women are ALL more physically fit than Sarah Palin. And as far as looking good in a pair of tight jeans, anorexics look good in a pair of tight jeans but they are far from healthy. If you will read the Vanity Fair article you will learn Sarah Palin has a ghost writer who worked on the Obama campaign early on. Every time I feel slightly sorry for people be sort of harsh towards the Palins personal life, well it is because of ignorant opinion pieces like this one. Michelle Obama's project is to get kids gardening and eating healthy, as if that is so horrible. I never remember people disparaging Nancy Reagan for encouraging kids not to do drugs in the 80's. Truth is Marie Antionette never said let them eat cake, and she was simply a young girl who did not know anything about finances. Michelle Obama is not at all like Marie Antionette, who was a young girl that liked to shop and was from another country. Give me a break, Sarah Palin is an agitator and likes to start conflicts over nothing. If she really cared about her fellow Americans she would be supportive of what Michelle Obama is saying, and encourage kids to eat healthy and move around. And as much as I do not like people criticizing the personal life of the Palins, well that Vanity Fair article pretty much demonstrated how being the permissive parent is really being no parent at all. Sure kids want to eat a whole bag of cookies, but you are deluded if you think Sarah Palin does. Her ghost writer and her like to distort the truth and cause conflict. You are ignorant if you fall for it.

The President and First Lady are only trying to promote healthy foods for our children. If you want your children to pig out on junk food you can have all the junk food you want waiting for them when they get home from school. The majority of Americans appreciate our children's health and nutrition being looked after. As long as there is lunch at school it SHOULD be healthy.

There are just too many people looking for fault solely because our President is not the party they are registered with. They are looking for fault where there is none. Not in this case.

I can understand having differing opinions about most anything, but not when it comes to our children's health. That I cannot understand.

All parties should be promoting better health and nutrition for our children. I don't care if it were Republicans, Tea Party, Democrats, Libertarian, what have you... if they promote better health for our children, I stand behind them on that issue.

If Tea Party and Republicans want to unite for a cause, I sure wish it would be a good cause, instead of trying to get the schools to serve our children junk food.

Surely you guys can come up with something "positive" to promote. I would stand behind you on the issue, regardless of party affiliation... I absolutely promise!!!

To the Republicans, please work on something positive for the people of this country. I would back it 100% if it were some positive change!

It is outright sad and embarassing to know that a dim wit such as Sarah Palin is actually followed by so many americans. She may represent so much that is wrong with the country today. She was defeated by her party and ultimately her stupidity so now she needs to vindicate herself by targeting the Obamas. Kind of like, I know I drank too much and didn't meant to crash my car into your porch, but I'm sueing you because your porch is my way. As for Beck, is he for real? Here's someone that's living the American dream; Lets make a career out of nothing. If you want to eat a package of cookies that is your business as an adult, but kids should at least have role models that encourage them to be active and eat healthy. You can distort the truth, slander people, and try to divide Americans, but all first ladies have had campaigns like Michelle does. Fact: as a nation we are in the middle of a diabetes epidemic.
Fact: as a nation we are in the middle of an obesity epidemic.
Fact: we pay for having unhealthy citizens.

If Sarah Palin looked at the facts, she would keep her mouth shut. As in her stand against sex education in Alaska.... It could well come back and bite her in the butt. (Bristol Palin unwed mother at 18.)

We are not a nation of hunter-gatherers any more. We are a nation, of computer using couch potatoes. We need to "encourage" (not force) our children to eat less, eat healthier and excercise more!

Mrs. Obama, is showing City kids how to grow things! So? Sarah Palin is encouraging us to eat moose! Who do you know with a moose in the backyard?

I am not much afraid of a kid with a shovel, but a hunting rifle? NO. That's not part of my shopping cart. A pack of seeds, a pot, and some dirt; $10 tops. Yeild tomatoes. Result kid eats a salad. Maybe likes salad for the rest of his life. That is doable for the average American family, even a poor one.

But, hunting lic, trip to the hunting grounds, hauling the beast back, having it butchered, freezer.... That's not any $10 investment. That's thousands. Sounds like "Millionaire Meat" to me.

So thank you Mrs Palin for advising us to stick another cupcake on our ass permanently. I, however, will go the Obama route. Give the kid an orange, tangerine, watermelon, blueberrys, or a scoop of cottage cheese with a cherry on top! Take the coca-cola out of the vending machines and put milk back in. Oatmeal cookies instead of Oreos. Custard in place of Twinkies. Serve the school kids an omelette for lunch in place of pizza. Put out broccoli with cheese in place of nachos. Carrot sticks in place of artery clogging french fries.

Save the take-out food for "Parental Choice". Give our children healthy choices in the schools. You can feed your kids all the twinkies you want in the privacy of your own home, or put them on a "sweets are good for you" commerical.

I could care less WHAT people want to eat, but Michelle Obama, in trying to make healthy choices and encouraging others to do so can hardly be faulted! I'm NOT an Obama supporter in general, but as a First Lady, she IS a fine role model for healthier choices and family values. No, most of us don't have a personal chef to cook for us, but it still doesn't excuse bad choices! As far as sounding "superior", Mrs. Obama IS an attorney, after all. Lawyers are NOT meek and unassuming if they are successful or intend to be. She BETTER sound sure of herself and be a believer in what she purports! I wouldn't want MY attorney to be unassuming!
My contention with those who say the government is telling us what to eat is this. The majority of lower middle class to poverty level households are on SOME type of food assistance program; whether it be all the food in the house paid for by tax dollars or partial and supplemental assistance for the household's groceries. I see kids at the convenience stores with an EBT card, buying JUNK food! THEN, when they are ill or their teeth are bad, Medicaid pays for THIS as well! NO, I DON'T think the government has a right to tell you what to eat, if YOU'RE paying for it,. I DO, however, believe that when TAX dollars are paying, government DOES have the right (and responsibility to the tax-payers) to determine what tax-dollars will NOT pay for! Want junk food? Then pay for it yourself! The typical multi-member household on full allotment food stamp assistance has enough left over after getting all the groceries they can use for the month, that they barter their OTHER needs with these "benefits". The allotment amount itself needs to be revamped.
The program was NEVER meant to be a lifetime entitlement for every person who chooses to live on (or within) “the system”, especially when continuing to add to the welfare rolls year after year, NEVER feeling the need to self-support their ever-growing families. The food program was designed for INTERIM hard times, not ongoing or self-imposed poverty. Of course, when initiated, there wasn't a convenience store on every corner! Without education about long-term consequences of bad dietary choices, what deterrent is there in allowing your kids to eat anything they want? It IS government's right to decide what GOVERNMENT pays for. It always HAS been! It just didn't SEEM necessary to impose the limits of that jurisdiction. It was wrongly assumed that parents would take responsibility for good nutritional (and OTHER) choices for their own families!
Now called SNAP (Supplemental NUTRITION Assistance Program), the USDA states, ”We put healthy food on the table for over 40 million people each month". That number will increase exponentially with NO government intervention as to how many NEW children a person can add to "the table”. If you work, does your employer give you get a raise in pay if you have another child? Of COURSE not! What a fictional concept!

Hey...we can look at Bristol Palin and be clear that there are no meals missed in that household! Mrs. Palin has no grounds to even look at Michelle's shoe soles.

If ignorant people and their fat obnoxious slow, heavy-breathing children want to eat junk, get and stay fat, smell like brewer's yeast and sweat, stress their internal organs, risk developing diabetes, high cholesterol and a myriad of health and emotional problems, continue to wear too little clothing while calling themselves "voluptuous" knowing full well they look like lumbering walruses and smelling like they bathed in a vat of purfume...WHY should I care?
I say take your fat ass to the table and eat until you pop and drop!

More room for my healthy, fit n'trim, beautiful, svelt, agile self to walk down the street, sit comfortably on a bus or train without you squeezing me in, fly for the regular fare and still have elbow room and eat in a restaurant without being nauseated by some pig shoveling food down their pie-holes!
All that I said...that's what people think about you. Honestly, I have nothing against people who aren't wearing single digits- we're not all supposed to be alike. I have been picked on (bullied) about being skinny all my life; people say consider it a complement...really? So why is it the minute I call someone FAT- (because they are fat) I've offended them and/or lowered some piggly kid's self esteem? If you feel bad about it- don't shoot the messenger who says it's a GOOD THING to be healthy and health conscious.

So...If you WILLINGLY and KNOWINGLY allow yourselves and your children to continue unhealthy practices simply because someone (who doesn't even know you but cares enough) suggests that you do something to IMPROVE your life, your children's life and the lives of your posterity you deserve what you get. It's obvious WHY these objectors are reacting negatively to Michelle's call to get up, get out and do something. If it were say...Sarah Palin saying the same Let's Move would be nothing short of "the gospel" and it's only because she "looks like" her audience. If Oprah sent the Let's Move call every suburban house-wife would be shouting TOWANDA...I mean Oprah is fat- common ground! But not our first lady Michelle- she's in top-notch shape...Envy much? HA!
It's just plain sad when someone would actually do the opposite and risk their's and a child's health and well being. So, let them eat cake, pie, deep-fried baby pigs wrapped in chocolate with glaze.
Hind-sight will be 20/20 when the GOP kills Obama's health care bill! They won't dare protest their elected right-wing saviours, nor can they go to the Government for help- the same they adamantly protest they are being forced to buy into.
So, the alternative is to just "suck it up" like they do their food. They will still try to find a way to blame Michelle and Let's Move for them not being able to move...because they're too fat.

I thought this article was funny until I read the first post by tmbodok. And I agreed with the first paragraph that it's just tasteless and trashy of Sarah Palin to keep disrespecting our President and First Lady. It's been two years....get over it soccer mom.
But then tmbodok went into a huge spiel that was utterly uncalled for and disrespectful about the Obamas. Now they're elitist? Why? Because their girls aren't morbidly obese like a huge proportion of us in the USA? tmbodok and other posters are mad somehow because the Obamas live in the White House? Uh yo you folks, it's kinda a custom here in the USA for the ELECTED PRESIDENT, you remember, by POPULAR along with electoral votes, to live there. I wish we could ship all you whiners off to another country, like your own island maybe, and let George Dubya be your king. You so deserve it, but alas in America even you have the right to free speech. Think about that, how many hateful and outright lies you've posted the last two years, yet no one came to your door and took you away. Socialist? Communist? I think not. Cheryl

Now that the (few) Palin faithful have lost the argument based on FACTS, MERIT, they now have to move the goalposts and are now going for the "well, Mrs. Obama is not telling me what to do but I don't like how she is saying it; condescending elitist" card, which is subjective or open to interpretation, given they don't have to objectively make their point based on an actual quote (in full) or link to any sources.

As for ParkerRules, that person's post was so convoluted and incoherent, chalk full of debunked Fox/AM Radio talking points so he/she is not even worth responding to.

Palinbots: High on self esteem, low on logic, facts, reason; anything of substance. Basically, like the foods Palin promotes, her followers simply spout hollow talking points and slogans; intellectual equivalent of empty calories.

And that's how the cookie crumbles.

Re: Palin, Beck & Obama - and national food policies. I do understand that Petri is trying to be funny, but ... what does the following sentence mean ? From her article .."We just want to lie down and sleep and decimate the local population of lasagna."

This woman is so preoccupied with trivial trash details and trying to stir up the pot, she should concentrate on learning which Korea is our ally......If this woman is ever successful at aspireing to be president it will prove to the rest of the world how low we as americans will stoop to scrape the bottom of the barrel for political candidates.

Michelle (with the huge caboose) ought to take the time to look in the mirror and check the menu for her own family before she pontificates about what other children are fed by their parents, still their responsibility by the way, not the nanny state of the Obamakins. By the way, is hubby still smoking and eating those burgers? Is all that ice cream now off them menu for your kids? Funny, but I seem to recall photos this summer during several of your vacations... I also am especially enjoying how all the "writers" at the Post never miss an episode of, Sarah Palin's Alaska on TLC. How the ex-candidate turned pundit must enjoy being your distraction while she fattens the Palin family wallet thanks to all of you. Keep up the good work of letting your emotions rule your common sense. We really enjoy it out in flyover country.

"Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understand it better but the frog dies in the process."

Anyway, here goes. First, this is the entire quote:

"There's a reason Garfield is the most widely syndicated comic strip. As a nation, we hate diets and Mondays and doing our jobs. We just want to lie down and sleep and decimate the local population of lasagna."

So Garfield is this fat, lazy, cartoon cat that Petri likes because he lies around all day making smart comments that show that he understands the meaning of the universe.

But rather than eat up all the birds in the neighborhood like cats do, we eat up all the available lasagna.

Now isn't it ironic that Sarah tells us all to eat junk in the name of liberty, while she starves herself and decimates the local moose population?

They'll take my Big Mac when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers. But if Uncle Sam wants to buy my kid some broccoli for lunch at school, who am I to turn it down?
===
And happy birthday to the Prince of Peace, who I'm sure lives within all of our hearts regardless of what we write here. Anyone interested in frog leg lasagna for Christmas dinner?
