Man found dead after standoff in Alexandria

Updated, 10:34 p.m.

An all-day barricade at an Alexandria apartment house ended late Tuesday when a man who apparently fired shots earlier in the day was found dead, Alexandria police said.

A police spokeswoman said officers entered the apartment house on Eisenhower Avenue shortly after 10 p.m.

It was not immediately clear how or when the man died.

But a police spokeswoman said officers didn't fire any shots during the long siege, which began almost 12 hours earlier.

Original post: A man, apparently armed, has barricaded himself inside an Alexandria apartment building, and the Alexandria SWAT team is working to get him out, authorities said.

Alexandria Police have been on the scene in the 4800 block of Eisenhower Avenue for several hours, authorities said.

The man is alone in the apartment, and others in the roughly 40 unit building have been advised to evacuate if needed, police said.

Police said they have not asked trains in the area to slow or stop, though VRE's Twitter page is reporting possible delays due to police activity.

Ryan Lange, a spokesman for VRE, said CSX informed them that traffic was stopped, and he was unsure where the stop order came from, but it did not originate with VRE.

"But nothing's moving," Lange said, including all freight, passenger and commuter trains.

The situation started around 10:45 a.m., when an Alexandria sheriff's deputy went to serve an eviction notice and heard shots fired inside the apartment.

We will always have money for war. Our citizens need to cope with it, not kill themselves. Just take your Big Pharma anti-depressants and get a minimum wage job. There's no way like the American way!

This is a very unfortunate situation. Seems like this man had some idea that his situation was escalating. Too bad he didn't see any other way out. PEOPLE THERE IS HELP OUT THERE--GO GET IT!
