Police ID suspect in Alexandria shooting
Alexandria police have identified the suspect in Friday's homicide as Jose Russo, 50, of the city.
Russo killed himself hours after he allegedly shot a man and a woman in a popuar Del Ray bakery, police said.
The man, Kossi Djossou, 19, of Fairfax County, died at the scene and the woman is listed in stable condition at a local hospital. Police have not released her identity.
Russo shot himself as detectives searched the neighborhood for the killer, authorities said. It happened as officers approached Russo.
The first shooting took place at 7:30 p.m. at the Gold Crust Baking Co. in the 500 block of East Monroe Avenue.
Police did not indicate a motive for the crime, but a family member of the victim who died said it was a crime of jealousy.
The victim's father, Geoffrey Djossou, said he had been told by an investigator that the suspect, who also worked at the bakery, "was possessive" and might have resented any contact between his son and the other victim.
He said he understood that the female victim "was trying to break up" with the suspect, who he said "was kind of jealous."
Geoffrey Djossou said his son came to the United States a little more than a year ago from Togo.
The slaying was the fifth this year in Alexandria, police said. Last year there were four.
