DNA database leads to arrest in 2003 Anne Arundel rape

More than six years after the rape of a 13-year-old girl in Severn, a DNA match has led to the arrest of an Appleton, Wisc., man, Anne Arundel police said.

Donnell Thomas Lee Bellamy, 30, of Appleton, is awaiting extradition after his March 16 arrest for the 2003 rape, assault, kidnapping and stalking offenses. He is accused of raping the girl along a dead end road as she walked home from a friend's house.

A DNA sample was on file in Wisconsin under a state law that requires felons to submit samples, according to the District Attorney's office for Outagamie County, which includes Appleton. Wisconsin court records show Bellamy was convicted in 2009 of the manufacture and delivery of THC (marijuana) and ordered to submit a DNA sample, which then would have been available for comparisons. Anne Arundel police said the match was found using an FBI-management system that indexes DNA samples collected by local, state and federal law enforcement.

DNA taken in the 2003 case was stored and in February, Anne Arundel detectives were notified that it matched DNA of a convicted felon whose DNA had been entered into a national database in 2009, according to a statement from Anne Arundel officials.

Police investigators in Wisconsin were not immediately available to explain why the 2009 DNA sample had been taken and what criminal case allegedly links it to Bellamy.

Anne Arundel police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said Bellamy had been arrested last year in Wisconsin and DNA samples taken under that state's law but did not have additional information.

Bellamy is being held by police in Grand Chute, Wisc., where he was arrested.

@rockettonu

just to explain--the first version of the story that came out only said "Donnell Thomas Lee" in the one sentence and then had Bellamy in the rest of the article. There wasn't a reference to "donnell thomas lee bellamy." So I'm assuming that was the basis for the question.
