Murder charges after Md. car crash

A 67-year-old Silver Spring man tried to kill his longtime companion and himself Sunday by running his 1994 Jeep Cherokee off Jessup Road and crashing into trash trailers, Anne Arundel Police said.

Henry Hutchins, of the 11000 block of July Drive, was driving at a high rate of speed on Brockbridge Road near Guilford Road just before 4:40 p.m. Sunday when he intentionally veered off the road into a storage area where large trash trailers were kept, police said.

The jeep rammed into a trailer, seriously injuring Hutchins and the front seat passenger, Carol Carter, 60.

Police said statements Hutchins made, along with evidence at the scene, shows he purposely rammed into the trailer in an effort to kill himself and Carter. Police said the pair had a 15-year relationship and Carter lives at the same address.

Carter is in critical condition and Hutchins is in serious condition, police said. They said an arrest warrant has been obtained charging Hutchins with attempted first and second-degree murder and assault.

The charges will be served upon his release from the hospital.
