Trial for Va. man in hiker's 1991 killing
The trial has begun for a Virginia man accused of killing a camp counselor 19 years ago in rural northeastern Pennsylvania.
The trial for 47-year-old Jeffrey Plishka started Monday in Honesdale, Wayne County. He is charged with murdering 24-year-old Laura Ronning in 1991 as she hiked near a waterfall in the Pocono Mountains.
Prosecutors say DNA evidence on a gun taken from Plishka's home links him to the crime. Plishka's attorney says the sample could have come from someone else.
Ronning, of St. Petersburg, Fla., was a counselor at Camp Cayuga when she disappeared in July 1991. Investigators say she was sexually assaulted and shot in the head.
Plishka, of Onley, Va., lived near where Ronning disappeared and participated in the search for her.
