6 dead in Baltimore house fire

By The Associated Press

A Baltimore fire department official says six adults and children have died in a house fire in East Baltimore.

Fire spokesman Kevin Cartwright says firefighters were called to battle the fire in the 2300 block of Homewood Avenue about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, and arrived to find a two-story brick home fully engulfed in flames.

Cartwright says firefighters initially attacked the fire from the interior, but wind gusts intensified the blaze and they were forced to retreat and battle it from the outside. He says once firefighters suppressed the fire, they searched the home and found the six victims.

Cartwright says he does not know the ages or identities of the victims, or how they were related.

He says the fire spread to another three homes.
