Md. baby thrown from window: Police

Baltimore County police say a woman who gave birth in the bathroom of her home put the newborn in a plastic bag and tossed the infant out a second-floor window. The baby girl survived.

It happened Thursday in Reisterstown. A 911 caller said a baby in a bag had been found in bushes behind the home.

Lt. Rob McCullough, a police spokesman, said 21-year-old Rebecca Himes, the daughter of the 911 caller, had given birth in the bathroom and thrown the infant out of the window.

McCullough says the baby apparently landed in the bushes and was found by Himes' younger sister.

Himes and the infant were taken to a hospital, and Himes has been released. The baby, still hospitalized, is in the custody of the Department of Social Services.

McCullough says police are investigating.

Why is she not charged yet? Oh, the MD legal system. They let these people walk free until they find loads of evidence, but in the meantime, they go and commit other crimes.

Good grief. Hope the woman who gaves birth gets psychiatric help. Hope the baby is set for adoption with a loving family that is NOT related to her family of origin. I also hope the woman who gave birth decides to obtain permanent conraception.

Why is the woman not charged with attempted murder? She put the baby in a plastic bag and tossed it out of the window like a bag of trash!

I am a friend of hers and the whole story doesnt ever get into the news. Yes she did a horrible thing but please dont judge her until you hear the whole true story.

Whomever had the foresight to but the baby in a trash bag means that person was of at least average intelligence and knew what they were doing.

response: No matter what the rest of the story is there is no excuse for what she did, this child is completely innocent and does not deserve that treatment.

I take it that even at 21 years of age, and despite all of the advertising about it, the young woman has never heard of the Safe Haven law? My personal opinion is that had she really cared about the baby's safety, she would have found a way to take the baby to a firestation or hospital and dropped it off without having to answer any questions. What she did was inexcusable.

She is confused, stupid and evil. As many people wanting to have children to take care of and love she just throws hers out the window. She could've got paid to give it to somebody.

I also am friends with this girl, and I know that she deserves concern, not cruelty.
She is a good girl, who already haves one daughter, whom she loves and we all adore. There was something more going on, mentally, none of us, not even her parents knew that she was pregnant.
I am bewildered and saddened to learn that I live in a nation where cruelty is applauded towards people you don't know. Yes, it was wrong, and we are all very happy that the baby is ok. However, saying that the mother is evil, well that's lunacy. She needs to be examined, and her mental health needs to be looked into.
What happened was sad, shocking, and wrong; however, attacking the mother when you know nothing about her is also wrong.

pardon my grammar and spelling in my last comment, i am simply appalled by the insensitivity of the general public.

Sounds as if you knew she was somewhat crackers. Why didn't you seek help for her?

For those of you who know this person you most certainly are not given sympathy to this other human being that did NOT ask to be brought into the world and thrown into the TRASH.

BIRTH CONTROL!!!!

Even if we don't know this person and no matter what her problems are, she still knew that it was wrong to put a baby in a trash bag and throw the baby out the window. She has some very serious mental problems that you and family need to address. And for the people who know her, you should be asking for child services to get the other daughter from her immediately before she throws that child out of a higher window.

No excuses for her, baby in a trash bag and thrown out the window is cowardly, cruel and evil.

Sterilize her.

Posted by: jckdoors | July 28, 2010 3:01 PM | Report abuse

So the excuse is that she had mental health problems? That much was gathered from the article. This was a heinous crime and to call her a good girl. Um no. Even if conceiving the child was a traumatic experience (rape/incest),and the birth triggered a mental break what happened isn't any less horrific.

Hopefully the baby and older child can find a loving home.

PS - I am in no way suggesting that the mother was raped just throwing it out there as an example.

People are horrified that a new born can be put in a trash bag and thrown out a second story window and this is showing insensitivity? Maybe you should look up the definition of insensitivity.

Thank God the baby is ok. The Mom is obviously indefinitely unfit for motherhood. Maybe this was a good wake up call before she actually raised the little girl.

Let's force young women into pregnancy. Yay!!! Then let's hate them when they can't stand having a child. I can't believe we still do this in 2010. We are so behind.
