Pit Bull attacks officer, Pit Bull gets shot, authorities say

Joseph Brock Romanowski, to hear sheriff's deputies in Southern Maryland tell it, knew they were coming for him.

So the 35-year-old ran out back, unleashed a Pit Bull, which attacked one of the officers, who shot the dog, which died a short time later, Charles County officials said in a news release Friday.

The incident began shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday, when officers received a complaint from a woman in the 2100 block of Reverdy Farm Road, Indian Head, who reported that her ex-boyfriend was beating her. When the first officer arrived, he saw Romanowski run toward the back yard, and the officer chased him.

Around back, in a wooded area, a fully grown Pit Bull charged him, grabbed hold of his ankle area, and tried to bite him, ripping his pants leg, Charles officials said.

The officer fell down, the dog charged again, and the officer let go at least one round, " striking the dog and disabling it," according to authorities.

The dog was taken to a nearby clinic where he died. His name reportedly was Twin, but that's unconfirmed. The officer was treated at a hospital for a wrist injury from the fall, said Diane Richardson, a spokeswoman for the Charles County Sheriff's Office. She declined to release the officer's name.

Richardson said that investigators found what appeared to be a fresh cut in the leash part of a leash-chain system in the back. She said the ex-girlfriend had visible injuries, and told officers that Romanowski had hit her in the head three times.

Officers charged Romanowski with first- and second-degree assault in connection with the alleged attack of his ex-girlfriend, and second-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, in connection with dog's alleged attack of the cop. He also was charged with theft under $100 after getting his ex-girlfriend's car keys, Richardson said.

Charles officials think the dog was being trained to be enlisted in dog fights. Richardson said the investigation is continuing.

Pit bulls are routinely used as weapons against police and to guard crack houses. Pit bulls are used extensively by gangs and dog fighting. ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS who fight breed specific legislation (pit bull bans) are helping the gangs and dog fighters by preserving their right to breed as many as they like-AND THEY DO!!!

It appears Romanowski isn't doing too well after retiring from the Denver Broncos

@cetude - What nonsense you spew! There's not a RESPONSIBLE Pit Bull owner or activist of ANY animal that doesn't want to see these dogs taken out of the hands of lowlifes such as this one.
Many, including myself, have been pushing FOR YEARS to make this happen.
But instead of taking the animals away from the likes of Romanowski, they --our so-called "leaders"-- want to ban them.
If that happens, ONLY idiots such as this a**wipe will own these dogs.

Why do so many people who have no business having dogs, have DOGS?! We need to make it illegal to breed and have dogs when you can't do it.

I spit in this guy's face for using a dog as a shield.

Worrying about whether lowlifes and thugs have DOGS is missing the point.

They shouldn't be allowed to have CHILDREN.

Great point crw3. Make that for the children too.
