Teen dies in Charles crash

Nathan Fiske, 16, of La Plata, was killed Wednesday afternoon when the car he was riding in went out of control eastbound on Mitchell Road at Carmelite Drive.

Fiske died at the scene after the car hit a tree, according to police, who arrived at the scene around 2:28 p.m.

The cause remains under investigation, but the Charles County Sheriff's Office said speed appears to have played a role.

The driver of the car, a Ford Crown Victoria, was described as 19 and from North Carolina. He was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Diane Richardson said police have not determined where the two were headed at the time of the crash. Both were wearing seat belts, she said.

What time was the accident? I know it's a lot to ask of a reporter to do a proper job.

Mitchell Road in that area can be hazardous because of the curves, especially for someone who might not be familiar with the area.
