Arrest after alleged Va. carjacking

A Springfield man has been arrested and charged with stealing a van with three children inside, Fairfax County Police said Monday.

A woman was sitting her car in the parking lot of the Shoppers Food Warehouse at 13920 Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy. when a man allegedly approached her, yelled, struck her and jumped into the driver's seat, according to a police news release.

He drove off with three children, all 5 years old, in the back seat, police said. Before exiting the parking lot, he pulled over and ordered the children out of the car, police said, and they complied.

Officers who saw the car heading west at high speed at Routes 28 and 50 followed it onto the Loudoun County Parkway, police said. The driver apparently lost control of the car, police said, and it jumped a curb and came to rest in some grass. Officers caught the driver as he tried to scale a fence, police said.

Charles W. Lawrence, 28, was arrested and charged with carjacking, three counts of abduction and speeding to elude, police said. None of the children was injured; Lawrence was taken to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries.
