D.C. police exchange shots with suspects

At least one person was shot and wounded late Sunday in the Brookland area of Northeast Washington after police were sent to investigate a possible burglary.

The incident occurred about 11 p.m. in the 1000 block of Irving Street NE, police said.

According to initial accounts, as many as three people may have been hit in the gunfire. in which police officers exchanged shots with possible suspects, a police official said.

A preliminary report indicated that one of those shot was taken to a hospital.

The incident remained under investigation late Sunday and full details of the incident were not immediately available.

The incident occurred about one half mile southeast of the Catholic University campus and Brookland stop on the Metro Red line.
