Gun found in D.C. jail may be part of 2003 scheme
Authorities recovered a handgun in the D.C. jail that may have been in the facility since at least 2003, officials said Tuesday.
The gun was recovered Monday night "in a channel within a component of the inmate telephone units" during a shakedown, D.C. jail officials said.
The weapon may be linked to another handgun smuggled into the facility that was part of a 2003 scheme in which four inmates agreed to shoot themselves in the hopes of suing the District and winning a monetary judgment for not keeping them safe, officials said.
The four inmates were wounded on Dec. 23, 2003, inside the jail’s maximum security wing. The inmates suffered minor injuries. Two were convicted and two others pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the plot.
Since the shooting, rumors have swirled through the jail that a second gun was part of the scam and it remained hidden somewhere inside the facility, authorities said.
Sylvia Lane, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Department of Corrections, said officials have been trying to find the rumored weapon ever since.
