Man shot, killed in Fairfax County
Update, 11:15 a.m.:
Police have released the names of the victim and suspect. Stephen Carr, 48, was shot and killed inside his home. Police have charged David Patton, 44, of the 9100 block of Conservation Way, with murder. The victim and suspect were known to each other, police said.
A man was shot and killed in Fairfax County Sunday night in what appeared to be a home invasion incident, county police said.
The incident occurred about 10:10 p.m. in the 6800 block of Field Master Drive, in the Springfield area of the county, about three miles southwest of the Capital Beltway.
A county spokesman said that the incident was not believed to be a random event, and did not pose a threat to neighbors or the general public.
It "looks like a targeted attack," said Officer Bud Walker. He said the attacker and the victim "knew each other."
Late Sunday night, shortly after the shooting, an active search was underway in the area.
Neighbors said a helicopter circled overhead, and dogs had been brought in, as officers equipped themselves with what appeared to be shields.
One neighbor said he heard officers shout “get down, get down!”
The short street where the incident occurred is lined with trees and single family houses. It intersects Sydenstricker Road and is about one half mile south of Old Keene Mill Road. It is in what one neighbor said was the Orange Hunt area, near Orange Hunt Elementary School.
