Va. man dies after being struck by car

A Falls Church area man died Monday night of injuries he suffered when he was hit by a car as he walked near Gallows Road on Saturday night, Fairfax County police said Tuesday.

Police said Glenn Melton, 76, of the 3300 block of Woodburn Village Drive was trying to cross Woodburn Road near Gallows Road in the Falls Church area shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday.

Melton was struck by a 1997 Ford Escort heading east on Woodburn Road, police said. Police said Melton was not in a crosswalk.

The 20-year-old driver of the Escort stayed at the scene and was not hurt. Melton was taken to nearby Inova Fairfax Hospital, where police said he was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. Monday. Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.

A Ford Escort is now classified as an SUV? You might want to double check either the headline or the body of the post, because one of them is wrong.

Wow, that Escort must have been seriously pimped out to be considered an SUV.

Hey Tom, are you sure it wasn't a Ford Excursion or the Ford Explorer. I drove an escort for years and trust me it was no SUV. How are you able to have a job at the biggest newspaper in DC and most of us recent college grads cant get a job anywhere. Stay on top of your stuff or I'm going to take your job bro.

Adam, maybe it's because you don't know how to use question marks when you're supposed to. Just sayin'...

@Duffy - grammar patrol fails again.

@duffy - People who end a sentence with a preposition shouldn't criticize someone else's grammar.

I don't write the headlines. Someone got confused, I guess.

It was shocking news to hear that a friend I've known for years died. The quibbling comments made about the post seem to eclipse the fact that a man's life has ended.
