A man caught during the act of a burglary at a Dale City home kicked an officer in the face, Prince William County police say.

Police responded to the residence in the 3800 block of Fillmore Drive Sunday night and discovered a basement fire unrelated to the burglary attempt, police said.

As police alerted other occupants to the blaze, the suspect, 35-year-old Manuel Rodriguez, was discovered in a locked room. He refused to exit, police said.

When police gained entry, Rodriguez assaulted the officer, police said.

Rodriguez lives in an adjacent home. He was charged with burglary, assault and resisting arrest.
