5 years for Va. Beach man who plotted to kill detective

A Virginia Beach man has been sentenced to five years in prison for plotting to kill a city detective.

Thirty-two-year-old Alexander Morris pleaded guilty this week in Virginia Beach Circuit Court to conspiracy to commit capital murder. He also admitted to a probation violation.

Prosecutors say Mayfield was an inmate at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center when police received information in February 2008 that he was soliciting others to kill the lead investigator in a case against him.

Another defendant in the plot, Ronald Mayfield of Norfolk, was sentenced earlier this month to 14 years in prison for solicitation to commit murder and other charges. Charges were dropped against another defendant.
